Biography

Initial life

Clifford Lee Burton was born in Castro Valley, California, to Ray and Jan Burton. He has two older brothers, Scott and Connie. Burton's interest in music began when his father introduced him to classical music and he began taking piano lessons.

In his teenage years, Burton was interested in rock, classical, and finally heavy metal. He started playing bass at the age of 13, after the death of his brother. His parents quoted him saying, "I will be the best bass player for my brother." He practiced up to six hours per day (even after he joined Metallica). Together with classical and jazz music, other early Burton influences vary from rock and country south to blues.

Burton cites Geddy Lee, Geezer Butler, Stanley Clarke, Lemmy Kilmister and Phil Lynott as a major influence on his bass playing style.

Career

While still a student at Castro Valley High School, Burton formed his first band called EZ-Street. The band takes its name from the Bay Area topless bar. Other members of EZ Street include future guitarist Faith No More "Big" Jim Martin and Faith No More and Ozzy Osbourne drummer Mike Bordin. Burton and Martin continued their music collaboration after becoming students at Chabot College in Hayward, California. Their second band, Agents of Misfortune, entered the Battle of the Bands contest in the Area Hayward Area Recreation in 1981. Their auditions were recorded on video and featured some early recording of Burton's trademark style. The video also shows Burton playing parts of what will soon be two Metallica songs: his signature bass solo, "(Anesthesia) - Pulling Teeth", and a colored intro to "For Whom Bell Tolls". Burton joined his first major band, Trauma, in 1982. Burton recorded the song "Such a Shame" with the band on the second compilation Metal Massacre .

In 1982, Trauma traveled to Los Angeles to perform at Whiskey a Go Go. Among those present were James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich, the two members of Metallica, who had formed the previous year. Upon hearing, as Hetfield had described, this "amazing shredding" (which later became "(Anesthesia) - Pulling Teeth"), both went looking for what they thought was an outstanding guitarist. When they learned that what they heard was a solo bass by Burton, they decided to recruit him for their own band. They asked him to replace the bassist who left Ron McGovney, and since Burton thought that Trauma "started getting a little commercial", he agreed. The idea of having to move to Los Angeles does not sit well with him, and says he will join only if the band will move from Los Angeles to the San Francisco Bay area of origin. Metallica, wanting to have Burton in the band, left their home town of Los Angeles to make a home in El Cerrito, a town located across the bay from San Francisco.

Burton's first recording with Metallica is a demo of Megaforce . The demo band made by the band before Burton joins, No Life 'til Leather , managed to get into the hands of Jon Zazula, the owner of Megaforce Records. The band moved to Old Bridge, New Jersey and quickly got a record deal with the Zazula label. Their debut album, Kill 'Em All , featured Burton's famous solo song, "(Anesthesia) - Pulling Teeth", which showcased the use of its effects, such as the wah-wah pedal, not commonly used by bass guitarists.

Metallica's debut album, Kill 'Em All , was originally intended to inherit the name of one of their previous demo releases (ahead of Burton's participation), which is Metal Up Your Ass , but the record company do not like the title and insist on changing it. After the band learned about the change, Burton said, "We must kill them all, man," which gives the band members the idea for a new title. The album was released on July 25, 1983 through Megaforce Records.

The band's second studio album, Ride the Lightning , showcased the band's increasing music growth. Burton's songwriting abilities grew, and he received credit on six of the album's eight tracks. Burton's playing style and use of effects are exhibited on two tracks: colored intros for "For Whom the Bell Tolls", and "lead bass" on "The Call of Ktulu".

Improved music on Ride the Lightning caught the attention of major record labels. Metallica signed with Elektra Records, and began working on her third album, Master of Puppets , considered by most critics to be an important album in heavy metal. Burton is particularly prominent on a number of tracks, especially the instrumental "Orion", which again features Burton's bass playing style. The album also contains Burton's favorite Metallica song "Master of Puppets". Master of Puppets is the band's commercial breakthrough, but it will be Burton's last album with Metallica.

Burton's last appearance was in Stockholm, Sweden, at Solnahallen Arena on 26 September 1986, one day before his death.

Death

During the tour of the leg leg of the Damage Inc. to support the Master of Puppets , the band complained that the cubicles on their tour buses were unsatisfactory and uncomfortable. To decide who gets the bed, Kirk Hammett and Burton draw a card. On the night of September 26, 1986, Burton won the game with a spade, so he got first choice from the bed and pointed at Hammett and exclaimed, "I want your bed!" Hammett replied, "Okay, take my bed, I'll sleep in front, maybe better there." Burton slept shortly before 7 am on September 27 when, according to the driver, the bus slipped off the road (E4, 12 miles (19 km) north of Ljungby), and flipped to the grass in Kronoberg County. Burton was thrown through the bus window, which fell over him, resulting in his death.

The bus driver said that the accident was caused by a bus that hit a patch of black ice on the road, but James Hetfield later stated that he first believed the bus was overturned because the driver was drunk. Hetfield also stated that he walked away on the street looking for black ice and found none. When the local freelance photographer Lennart Wennberg (who attended the scene of the mishap the next morning), was asked in later interviews about the possibility that black ice caused the accident, he said it was 'out of the question' because the road was dry and the temperature was about 2 Â ° C (36 Â ° F), above the freezing point of 0 Â ° C (32 Â ° F). This was confirmed by the police who - like Hetfield - also did not find ice on the road. Detective Ljungby, Arne Pettersson, reported in a local newspaper said the tracks at the crash site were exactly as seen when the driver fell asleep behind the wheel. However, the driver states under oath that he sleeps during the day and is fully rested; his testimony was confirmed by a second tour bus driver carrying the crew and band equipment. The driver was determined not guilty of the accident and no charges were brought against him.

Legacy

Burton's body was cremated and his ashes spread over Maxwell Ranch. At the ceremony, the song "Orion" is played. The lyrics "... can not the Kingdom of Salvation take me home" from "To Live Is To Die" written on the memorial stone of Burton. Shortly after Burton's death, Jason Newsted of Flotsam and Jetsam became Metallica's new bassist, the position he held until his resignation in 2001. This role has been filled by producer and studio musician Bob Rock and by former bassist Suicidal Tendencies and Ozzy Osbourne, Robert Trujillo.

Metallica wrote a tribute to Burton titled "To Live Is To Die" for ... and Justice for All . Burton also received writing credits for lyrics and bass parts taken from an unused bass recording performed by Burton re-recorded by Jason Newsted. The non-Metallica award for Burton is the song "In My Darkest Hour" by thrash metal band Megadeth. According to Dave Mustaine, for hearing of Burton's death, he sat down and wrote music for the song in a single sitting. The lyrics, however, are not related to Burton's death. Mustaine was Metallica's main guitarist in the early days and was a close friend of Burton at the time.

On October 3, 2006, a memorial stone was unveiled in Sweden near the site of the fatal accident. It is located in the parking lot to Gyllene Rasten.

Thrash metal band Anthrax dedicates his album Among the Living to him, as does Metal Church with The Dark .

On April 4, 2009, Burton was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, with fellow Metallica band James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich and Kirk Hammett. Future bassists Jason Newsted and Robert Trujillo were sworn in as well. During the ceremony, the induction was received by his father Ray Burton, who shared the stage with the band and mentioned that Cliff's mother is actually the biggest fan of Metallica.

A biography, To Live Is to Die: The Life and Death of Cliff Burton Metallica , written by Joel McIver, published by Jawbone Press in June 2009. Hammett gave the book's introduction.

In November 2016, Metallica released the album Hardwired... to Self-Destruct . The deluxe version of this album features a series of live recordings in Berkeley, the legendary recording store California Rasputin Music in Store Day celebration celebration on April 16, 2016. The song "Fade to Black" is played with vocalist James Hetfield dedicated the song to the end of Cliff Burton. During the song Hetfield shouted, 'Can you hear us Cliff?'.

In 2017, it was revealed that Burton's parents had "secretly" donated the posthumous royalty payments to a scholarship fund for music students at his alma mater Castro Valley High School.

In 2018, the Supervisory Council of Alameda County, California issued a proclamation declaring February 10, 2018 (what would be Cliff Burton's 56th birthday) as "Cliff Burton Day" after a fan petition was successfully passed.
