"A mixture of different songs later became the ending theme of Let It Be (1970), which was the last album of The Beatles that was released just after the group was split. The single version was later released on the compilation album 1967-1970 , 20 Biggest Hits , Master Past , and 1 >.

The single reached number one in the UK, USA, Ireland, Canada, New Zealand, Netherlands, Australia, France, West Germany, Mexico, Norway, Switzerland, Austria and Belgium. It was the only single of The Beatles that praised other artists at their request. "Get Back" is the release of the first single The Beatles in a true stereo in the US. In Britain, the single The Beatles remained monaural until the next release, "The Ballad of John and Yoko".

Music development

"Get Back" is unusual in the Beatles canon where almost every moment of the song's evolution has been widely documented, from its beginnings as a riff offuit to final mixing in multiple versions. Much of this documentation is in the form of illegal (but widely available) pirated records, and is told in the book Get Back: The Beatles' Official Chronic Let It Be Disaster by Doug Sulpy and Ray Schweighardt.

The melody of the song grew from an unstructured clock disorder on January 7, 1969 during an exercise session on the sound stage at Twickenham Studios. Over the next few minutes, McCartney introduced some lyrics, reworking "Back where you should be" from "Beatle Sea Harris" Beatle George Harrison to "Go back to where you were". McCartney has played bass on Jackie Lomax's recording of "Sour Milk Sea" a few months earlier. On January 9, McCartney brought a more advanced version of "Get Back" to the group, with the stanza "Sweet Loretta" close to the final version. For a press release to promote "Get Back" single, McCartney wrote, "We were sitting in the studio and we made it out of thin air... we started writing the words there and then... when we finished it, we recorded it in Apple Studios and make it a song to work with roller-coast. "

At the beginning of the Let It Be version of the song, Lennon can sound jokey by saying "Sweet Loretta Fart (often mis-heard as" fat ", because of Lennon's pronunciation), he thinks he's a cleaner, but he's frying. "The album version also ended with the famous Lennon" I want to thank you for the group and ourselves, and I hope we pass the audition ". (At first he said it was at the end of the rooftop concert, but Phil Spector edited it into the song "Get Back" on the Let It Be album.)

In an interview in Playboy magazine in 1980, Lennon described "Get Back" as "... a better version of 'Lady Madonna' You know, rewriting potboilers." Lennon also said that "there are some things underlying about Yoko there," saying that McCartney saw Yoko Ono in the studio every time she sang "Go back to where you started."

Lyrics of early protest

When McCartney introduced the song to the group during Twickenham practice, the lyrics were mostly incomplete except for the "Get Back" chorus. McCartney improvised various lyrics while pointing to what has been known in Beatles folklore as the "No Pakistan" version. This version parodies the anti-immigrant view of Enoch Powell, a member of parliament whose racial speeches have recently gained much media attention. The lyrics are directed at immigrants in the United States and Britain: "... no Puerto Ricans living in the US"; and "do not dig Pakistani people who take the jobs of everyone," although the lyrics are meant to be a parody and criticism of those who are prejudiced against immigrants. Later in the same session, the subject of immigration came up again in an improvised jam known as the "Commonwealth". The lyrics include the phrase "Better go back to your Commonwealth homes".

On January 23rd, the group (now at Apple Studios) tried to record the song correctly; pirated recordings perpetuate the conversation between McCartney and Harrison between taking discuss the song, and McCartney explaining the original "protest song" concept. The tape captures the group that decides to drop the third verse because McCartney does not feel the verse is of sufficiently high quality, although he likes the word "Pakistani" scanning. Here the song is solidified in its two-bait, three-solo format.

Post-production recordings and work

Billy Preston joins the Beatles on keyboards from January 22, recruited by Harrison in part to prevent a fight between the Beatles. The group with Preston played the electric piano Fender Rhodes recorded about ten on 23 January. On January 27th they made a concerted effort to perfect "Get Back", recording about 14 times. At this time the song has an incorrect ending addition and a reprise coda. After a lot of bands picked up a few old numbers and then returned to "Get Back" for the last time in an attempt to record a master take. This show (Take 11) is considered the best - the music is loud and punchy without fault, even though the song is finished without restarting. On the recording session, George Harrison commented "we missed it"; this is the version heard on the album Let It Be... Naked . On January 28, the group attempted to recapture the previous day's performance and noted some of the new take each including the coda. While this is great, they do not quite achieve the best shooting quality from the previous day. The lineups for the "Get Back" version released are Paul McCartney, lead and bass vocalist; John Lennon, main guitar and backing vocals; George Harrison, rhythm guitar; Ringo Starr, drums; and Billy Preston, the electric piano. Harrison, the usual lead guitarist, temporarily quit the group on January 10, so Lennon worked his main guitar.

The Beatles have EMI produced a mono remix of the song on April 4, completed by Jeff Jarrett. The Beatles were not happy with the mix and on April 7 McCartney and Glyn Johns worked at Olympic Studios to produce a new remix for the single release. They made edited versions using the best picks from the main part of the song (picking eleven) from January 27th and 'best koda' which ends from January 28th. This editing is so precise that it seems to be a continuous shoot-out, reaching the end of the Beatles' desired endure. This is a difference from the concept of live performances without studio tricks, but a relatively small one, and avoids the rather sudden endings of the version used on the album Let It Be... Naked .

The Beatles performed "Get Back" (along with other songs from the album) as part of the Beatles' roof performance, which took place on the rooftops of Apple Studios in Savile Row, London on January 30, 1969, an edited version of that included in the movie < i> Let It Be . "Get Back" is done three times. During the third, which marked the end of the roof performance, the Beatles were harassed by police who received complaints from nearby office workers. After the police talk to Mal Evans, he turns off Lennon and Harrison's amplifiers only to Harrison to turn it back on, insisting that they finish the song. It was during this period that McCartney ad-libbed, "You've played on the roof again, and that's no good, and you know Mummy you do not like it... he's mad... he'll have you arrested! Get back!" the third "Get Back" is available at Anthology 3 : the last song from the last live performance of The Beatles.

At the end of the last roof appearance of "Get Back", the audience applauded and McCartney said "Thank you, Mo" in answer to Maureen Starkey's cheers. Lennon added: "I want to thank you for the group and ourselves and I hope we have passed the audition". Spector uses some talks before master take on January 27 and edits this comment to make the sound of different album versions of singles.

The single stereo, and b-side version, "Do not Let Me Down", is the first Beatles recording featuring Starr's drum kit in real stereos, mixed in the left and right channels. It utilized a fairly new 8-track recording technology and is a result of the increasing popularity of stereo over mono. The only other Beatles song that uses this recording method is "The End" at Abbey Road .

Release

Single version

On April 11, 1969, Apple Records released "Get Back" as a single in the UK, paired with "Do not Let Me Down" on the B-Side. The single kicked off her 17-week stay on the charts on April 26th at No. 1. 1, the position he held for six weeks. This is the first Beatles single to enter the official British single chart at the top. In the US, "Get Back" started the first of 12 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 weekly chart that ended May 10. Two weeks after the debut the song chart reached Number 1, where it lasted for five weeks. "Get Back" became the 17th song no. 1 band on Billboards, equaling the previous record of Elvis Presley's 17 numbers.

In the UK and US, the single was released by Apple, although EMI retained the rights to the song as part of their contract. This is the only single The Beatles to include the accompanying artist name, crediting "Get Back/Do not Let Me Down" to "The Beatles with Billy Preston". Both Apple and Capitol Records created a sleeve image for the single - it's just packed in an arm that says "The Beatles on Apple". Apple launched a print ad campaign for the song in conjunction with a release featuring a band photo with the Beatles' slogan of Nature Intended , indicating that the "Get Back" vote held in the early days of the group..

The single version of this song contains the reverb effect of space along and coda after the wrong ending, with the lyrics "Get back Loretta/your mother waiting for you/Wear high heels/And low neck sweater/Back home, Loretta." This does not appear in the album version ; The first LP appearance of a single version will come three years later on the compilation 1967-1970 . This version also appeared on albums 20 Greatest Hits , Past Masters and 1 . It was also included in the original compositions of the proposed Get album which will be released during the fall of 1969.

In England and Europe "Get Back/Do not Let Me Down" is the last single of The Beatles to be released in mono format, but in the US the single is released stereo. This is the first single The Beatles to be released in real stereo, not mono as part of the "stereo only" movement that gained power in 1969. In both versions, the main guitar played by Lennon is in the left channel and the rhythm guitar is played by Harrison is on the right channel. The single was also released in an experimental PocketDisc format by Americom in conjunction with Apple and Capitol in the late 1960s.

Let It Be version

When Phil Spector came to do a remix of "Get Back" he wanted to make it look different from the released version as a single, even though both versions were the same. The previously unreleased albums Get Back incorporated studio chat elements to add a live feel to the recording. In this spirit, Spector was part of the studio chats recorded immediately before the recording recorded on January 27, crossing slightly to the beginning of the same master take (recorded on January 28), and added McCartney and Lennon's comments after the roof's closing performance. This creates the impression that single versions and albums are different. A single reverb effect is also removed from this remix.

Let It Be... Naked Version

In 2003, "Get Back" was re-released on the Let It Be... Naked album, remixed by independent producers with sanctions from former Beatles Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, with John Janda Lennon and George Harrison. The "naked" version of "Get Back" is a version that is purged from a single version though much shorter because there is a fade just before the whoo and last coda. A single reverb effect is also removed from this remix. Apple also prepared a specially made music video of the song Let It BeÃ, Naked to promote the album in 2003. The video was edited together using the band's stock recordings, along with Billy Preston, George Martin, and others.

Love

In 2006, a new version of "Get Back" produced by George Martin and his son Giles was included in the album Love . This version incorporates elements of "A Hard Day's Night" (Intro Chord), "A Day in the Life" ("Improved Orchestral Crescendo"), "The End" (Ringo Starr solo drums, second guitar solos Paul McCartney, and John Lennon's last guitar solo ), and "Sergeant Catfish's Lonely Hearts Club Band (Reprise)" (Take the drum count-off intro). However, there are some edits in this article, including extended intros, and the second verse is completely removed. Performance

Show too late

McCartney did a "Get Back" on Late Show with David Letterman on July 15, 2009. The Letterman show was recorded at Ed Sullivan Theater, the same theater that hosted The Beatles show on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1964 and 1965. However, McCartney's performance was not on stage. Instead, he appeared on a theater tent overlooking Broadway. In the interview before the show, Letterman asked McCartney if he had ever played in a tent before. "I've made a roof," McCartney replied, referring to the 1969 performance of The Beatles atop the Apple Corps building in London.

Saturday Night Live performance

McCartney also performed the song as a kind of encore on Saturday Night Live on December 11, 2010. The show was unusual for the show because McCartney had played two standard songs played by the music guests, then played the third song ("A Day in the Life "). At the normal conclusion of the show, when host Paul Rudd thanked the players, McCartney took the stage again for "Get Back", a broadcast that was partly interrupted by time constraints.
