iOS 8 vs iOS 9: Should you update your iPhone now? - Tech Advisor
src: cdn2.techadvisor.co.uk

iOS 9 is the ninth major release of the iOS mobile operating system developed by Apple Inc., which became the iOS 8 successor. It was announced at the Worldwide Worldwide Developer Conference on June 8, 2015, and was released on September 16, 2015 Replaced by iOS 10 on September 13, 2016.

iOS 9 includes many feature updates to the built-in app. Most notably, Notes received the ability to draw sketches with different tools, image insertion, prominent visual appearance for website links and map locations, and advanced list formatting; Apple News all-new app collects articles from various sources; and Apple Maps receive mass transit support, albeit in limited locations during launch. Major new system updates include proactive, where Siri and advanced search are combined to make the operating system more contextually aware of information (such as time and location), and can provide information to previous users. For search, proactive intelligence can show instant results in formats such as widgets, including weather, sports, news, and more. iOS 9 also adds various forms of multitasking to the iPad. In iOS 9.3, Apple adds Night Shift mode that changes the color of the device display to warmer, less "light blue" colors, to prevent potential negative screen effects on the user's circadian rhythm. In addition, iOS 9 brings new user experience functions, including Quick Actions, and Peek and Pop, based on touch sensitive touch technology in the iPhone 6S. Quick Actions are shortcuts in the home screen app icons. Users can view ("Peek") in the content without switching from the current screen before they enter ("Pop") content previewed to full view.

IOS 9 reception is positive. Critics praise Proactive and Siri for making the Notification Center a central location for all information, and potential for future updates to improve functionality. New multitasking features for the iPad are praised, such as drawing and insertion of photos in Notes apps. However, Apple News was criticized for the low number of articles worth seeing, and Apple Maps was criticized for the limited availability of geographic public transport support.

Five days after its release, Apple announced that iOS 9 had been installed on more than 50% of "active" iOS devices, which Apple described as "the fastest adoption rate ever for the new operating system".

System features

3D Touch

On the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus, a touch sensitive feature called 3D Touch is incorporated into iOS 9. This is similar to Force Touch, which can be found on the trackpad of some Apple MacBook computers. Quick actions and shortcuts are added to apps that support the 3D Touch feature and are triggered by pressing a little harder on the app icon. It also introduces an action known as Peek and Pop, which lets users keep a preview ("Peek") of any type of content in a floating window before they optionally apply more pressure to include ("Pop") content to full view.

The taptic engine on the iPhone 6S provides haptic feedback every time the user presses the screen harder.

Battery

iOS 9 comes with two important battery-saving updates. When the phone is facing down, the screen will not turn on when receiving notifications. Apple also added a Low Power Mode, which converts the amount of energy dedicated to background and animation services. For example, a background app refresh and push email are paused during Low Power Mode. When the phone reaches the battery level of 20%, the user is automatically prompted to enable Low Power Mode, which changes the color of the battery icon in the top line status line on the screen. When the battery goes up higher than the 80% level, Low Power Mode automatically turns off.

Design

San Francisco, a new system font, replaces Helvetica Neue as the iOS system typeface.

iOS 9 adds a new battery widget to the Notification Center that shows the battery life and charging status of connected Bluetooth devices.

When the shift key is off, lowercase is displayed on the keyboard, not an all-hat representation on earlier iOS versions.

Installation

iOS 9 is a smaller update than iOS 8, requires 1.3a space, GB, compared to 4.58 GB for iOS 8. Additionally, iOS 9 includes an option to temporarily remove apps to allow updates to install. After the update is installed, the app will be restored automatically. iOS 9 also has a "thinning app" function, where only the asset required to run the app on each device is downloaded over the entire app, potentially saving space.

Multitasking

iOS 9 adds a number of features to the iPad to increase productivity. These include Slide Over, Split Screen, and Picture in Picture, for enhanced multitasking, similar to the experience found on OS X El Capitan. Slide Over allows users to pull a second app by swiping from the right edge of the screen. This app requires 1/3 of the screen and attaches to the right side of the screen, while interactivity in full-screen apps is disabled when left inactive in the background. This feature allows the user to perform quick tasks and then close the app again.

If the user taps on the handle next to the Slide Over window or extends the window further to the left of the screen, the user enters the Separate Screen, which lets them interact with two applications simultaneously side by side in a 50/50 split. Users can also switch to other apps either in Slide Over mode or Split Screen view by dragging the handle at the top of the app and selecting another app from the list to replace the existing one.

Images in Picture mode allow users to minimize FaceTime or video calls supported to smaller windows and keep watching them while performing other tasks on the iPad.

The Screen Multitasking feature is available only for iPad Air 2, iPad mini 4, and iPad Pro, while the Slide Over and Picture in Picture features are available on iPad Air, iPad Air 2, iPad mini 2 and later, and iPad Pro.

When a banner notification is tapped, causing another app to open, a back button in the top left corner of the screen has been added, bringing the user back to the previous app.

Night Shift

Night Shift is a display mode introduced in iOS 9.3. This mode shifts the display color of the device warmer, similar to F.lux, a popular program for Microsoft Windows and Apple macOS computers. When enabled, it uses the device's clock and geographic location to determine when to turn the feature on or off. Optionally, users can set up a manual schedule, or do not have a schedule at all. For easy access, there is a New Night Shift button in the Control Center. Settings for Night Shift are located under "Display and Brightness" in the Settings app, and above enabling the feature and schedule settings, the user can also set the screen warmth.

Although it was introduced to iOS 9.3 in March 2016, it was not possible to use Night Shift and Low Power Mode simultaneously until the release of iOS 9.3.2 two months later. Night Shift requires a 64-bit processor found only on Apple A7 or newer chips, which means older iOS devices, including iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, iPhone 5C, iPad 2, iPad 3, iPad 4, iPad Mini first generation , and iPod Touch 5, does not accept Night Shift mode.

Performance

iOS 9 includes performance improvements and speed thanks to the use of expanded Metal APIs. Metal was introduced in iOS 8 and was previously limited to game developers. In iOS 9, Metal usage is expanded to let it handle many of the core user interface elements and graphics.

Proactivity

Intelligence is one of the key features in iOS 9, consisting of newly integrated Siri and Search (previously known as Spotlight), as well as "proactive" across the operating system. iOS is now more aware of contextual information (such as time and location), and proactively provides users with what they may need before to save their time and effort. As you type, Search has also been upgraded to show instant answers instantly, widget-like formats, similar to those provided in the Siri interface. Search can display current weather, sports scores, news, and more. Search Screens with proactive suggestions can be accessed either by dragging down the notification window, in the Safari web browser via the search bar, and left on the home screen.

The intelligence also extends into the application. For example, in Mail, events can be automatically added to Calendar if details are found in the message content, and possible additional recipients are advised during message composition. Siri also realizes what is currently on the screen when he is involved with pressing the home button.

Security

iOS 9 introduces several security enhancements. It introduces a 6-digit passcode as the default, an additional two digits from the previous 4-digit default, as well as support for two-factor authentication.

The original iOS 9 release in September 2015 fixes security issues in previous iOS versions where "defects allow anyone within the AirDrop user range to install malware on target devices and tweak iOS settings so exploit will still work if the victim rejects the incoming AirDrop file ".

Settings

The Settings app on iOS 9 has a search bar that makes it easier to find settings and options. Users also have the option to let notifications be grouped by the apps they come from, and the ability to enable or disable Goyang for Undo.

Other changes

On iPad, drag two fingers on the keyboard move the cursor freely like a traditional trackpad, making cursor position and selecting text easier. The keyboard-to-trackpad feature is also extended to the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus, where users can 3D Touch (forced press) keyboard to activate the trackpad. Also on the iPad, a shortcut bar has been added for cutting, copying, inserting, undoing and repeating functions, and folders displaying 16 apps per page in 4-by-4 settings, compared to 9 on iPhone, allowing for a total increase of 240 apps in one folders.

iOS 9 introduces Wi-Fi Assist, a feature, by default, that automatically switches the phone to mobile data when the Wi-Fi connection is aligned.

Whenever users are presented with flight information, users can click on a link to preview for that flight.

The Messages app allows users to search for text and the text is highlighted (and scrolled).

Maps

Apple Maps adds support for transit directions in Baltimore, Berlin, Chicago, London, Los Angeles, Mexico City, New York City, Paris, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Toronto and Washington DC, along with "more than 300 locations in China".

The Maps app now also has enhanced location details, including Nearby features that recommend shops, restaurants and drinking places near the user. For places that serve food, the user can determine exactly what type of food they want.

News

iOS 9 includes a new Apple News app (replacing Kiosk app), which combines news from multiple sources in a style similar to Flipboard. This app has "fast-loading mobile formatting and has informative animations and colorful images." In addition, News supports RSS feeds from the Safari web browser. At launch, the News app is only available in the United States, but expanded to UK and Australia with iOS 9.1 update.

In March 2016, Apple opened the News platform to all news agencies, including independent bloggers.

Note

The Notes app has received a number of improvements in iOS 9, including the ability to draw sketches with a number of different tools, including a ruler for a straight line. Images can also be added, and links to websites and Map locations get a more prominent visual display when added to notes. On iPad, and on the iPhone in landscape mode, Notes has various color options for drawing, as well as erasers. Advanced formatting options include checklists that are checked, streaked, dotted and numbered.

The app also supports iCloud and allows easy folder creation.

The secure notes feature, introduced in iOS 9.3, allows iOS users to protect their records with a passcode or Touch ID.

Photos

The Photos app on iOS 9 includes an improved polishing bar in the photo viewer, "Screenshots" and "Selfies" albums, as well as the ability to hold and select multiple photos with ease, without having to delete them individually. It also allows users to hide sensitive material through the new Hide option. The app also allows users to pinch-to-zoom while playing videos.

Safari

With the release of iOS 9, the Safari web browser allows third-party content blocking apps. Safari also allows users to customize the look of the Reader mode, with options for background fonts and colors.

A few days after the release of iOS 9, the ad blocking software has topped the App Store charts, with Marco Arment, the developer of the Peace app, saying that "web advertising and tracking behavior are uncontrollable... They are unacceptable, creepy, bloated, irritating , and unsafe, and they are getting worse with alarming speed. "

Wallet

The Passbook app is renamed to Wallet on iOS 9 and includes many new changes, such as support for store loyalty cards, gift cards, Discover/debit/Discover debit cards and Apple Pay in the UK. The Wallet app is also accessible from the lock screen.

Reception

iOS 9 receives most positive reviews. And Seifert from The Verge praised the improvements in Proactivity and Siri, highlighting how the notification drop-down contains most, if not all, of the information the user needs. Although he pointed out that Google Google Now and his personal assistant Cortana Microsoft offer similar services, sometimes with a "better and more varied way" in achieving results, improvements to iOS "lay the groundwork for more future capabilities". Chris Velazco from Engadget loves a small, thoughtful "design change," but is very impressed with the new multitasking feature for iPad, referring to the Separate Screen as a "beautiful little feature". He, however, criticized the low number of articles that looked good on Apple News, writing that "you'll see a difference in how some articles are handled - mostly just formatted text on a white background with an outlet logo at the top" and also noting the number of unlimited locations on Apple Maps that, when launched, support bulk transit instructions. Matt Swider from TechRadar writes that the list of Siri and Proactivity is "strong", and enjoys notifications that are sorted chronologically rather than by app. Samuel Gibbs from The Guardian welcomes changes to native applications such as image insertion and photos in Notes, identification of unknown numbers from emails by Phone, and Siri automatically launches the Music app while plugging in headphones. He also praised updates on the keyboard, calling it "easier to use".

Apple faces a $ 5 million lawsuit for allegedly slowing iPhone 4S with iOS 9. This is because according to the lawsuit, the iOS 9 update slows the iPhone 4S until the phone is unusable (due to slow performance) and that Apple knows this fact (planned obsolescence).

On September 21, 2015, Apple announced that iOS 9 has been installed on more than 50% of "active" iOS devices, as measured by the App Store. According to Apple, this is "the fastest adoption rate ever for a new operating system".

Problem

Error 53 bricking problems

In February 2016, news outlets reported that users who updated to iOS 9 on certain devices that had components fixed by third parties (especially the Touch ID fingerprint recognition sensor) made their phones bricked. The problem, named "Error 53", is, according to iFixIt, limited to iPhone 6 and 6 Plus devices. Apple states:

We protect the fingerprint data using a secure enclave, uniquely paired to the Touch ID sensor. When the iPhone is served by an authorized Apple service provider or an Apple retail store for changes affecting the Touch ID sensor, the pair is re-validated.... This check ensures the iOS device and feature associated with Touch ID remains secure. Without this unique pair, the malicious Touch ID sensor can be replaced, thus gaining access to a secure enclave. When iOS detects that the pair is failing, Touch ID, including Apple Pay, is disabled so the device stays safe.

Apple released a new version of iOS 9.2.1 later in February to fix this problem.

Troubleshoot reboot

In February 2016, a bug was found that permanently disabled the 64-bit device. Bugs, timing until January 1, 1970, will cause the device to crash in the process of rebooting. iOS 9.3, released on March 21, 2016, fixes this issue.

9.7-inch iPad Pro bricking issue

In May 2016, Apple released iOS 9.3.2. The update was followed by reports that it immersed some 9.7-inch Pro iPad iPads, with a message "Connect to iTunes", and an error message "Error 56" on iTunes that was unable to recover the tablet.

Apple paused offering a 9.3.2 update, until a version release in June 2016 fixed this problem.

crash iBooks

The launch of iOS 9.3.3 in July 2016 was followed by reports that the iBooks store crashed. However, Apple explained in August that the time is a coincidence, and the iBooks app crash is the result of server problems, not software updates.

Spyware Attack

The iOS 9.3.5 launch in August 2016 fixes three critical security vulnerabilities. Vulnerabilities can be exploited to secretly activate the jailbreak and allow the malicious installation of spyware called "Pegasus". Pegasus can intercept and read text messages, emails, track calls, track phone locations, activate microphones, and gather information from apps, including (but not limited to) iMessage, Gmail, Viber, Facebook, WhatsApp, Telegram and Skype.

The vulnerability discovery dated 10 days before update 9.3.5 was released. Arab human rights advocate Ahmed Mansoor received a suspicious text message with a link and sent it to the Citizen Lab. The investigation took place with the collaboration of the Lookout security firm that revealed that if Mansoor had followed the link, he would have jailbreaked on his cell phone and planted it with spyware. The Citizen Lab links the attack to a private Israeli spyware company known as the NSO Group that sells Pegasus to the government for "legitimate interception".

Regarding how widespread the issue is, Lookout explains in a blog post: "We believe that this spyware has been in the wild for significant time based on some indicators in the code" and shows that the code shows signs of "a kernel mapping table that has a value all the way back to iOS 7 ".

News about spyware gained significant media attention, especially as it is called the "most sophisticated" smartphone attack ever, and for the first time in iPhone history that remote jailbreak exploits have been detected.
