Plot

After the sudden death of a director of the small-town church choir (Kris Dayanti) in Pacashau, Georgia, Vi Rose Hill (Latifah), an unceremonious mother who raised two teenagers alone, controlled the choir using the traditional gospel style they Father Dale (Courtney B. Vance) agreed. However, the widow director, G. G. Sparrow (Parton), the main contributor to the church, believes that he should be given a position. As in previous years, the choir reached the regional finals of the national "Joyful Noise" amateur competition, only to be disappointed when the opponent's choir beat them. The tough times in the city have caused budgetary problems that threaten to close the choir, at the same time as the city needs more inspiring music of the choir than ever.

Vi Rose has a son, Walter (Dexter Darden), who has Asperger's syndrome, and a talented, beautiful and ready dating daughter, Olivia (Keke Palmer). But Olivia was not ready to date her mother's house rules. G. G. has recently started treating his rebel granddaughter, drifter, Randy (Jeremy Jordan). A romance bloomed between Olivia and Randy, which Vi Rose strongly opposed. Olivia also has a competitor, Manny (Paul Woolfolk). At the instigation of Randy, G. G., Olivia and most of the choir believed that some of the more contemporary arrangements (prepared by Randy) would be more successful for the choir. It also shows that the chorus had a chance in the national finals of the competition when the opponent's choir was found to have been deceived by professional recruitment. But the pastor says that the church will not sponsor the choir unless they continue to use their traditional, respectful style.

Vi Rose's husband, Marcus (Jesse L. Martin), enlisted in the army after difficulty finding work at home, but his prolonged absence had upset his family and caused additional tension between Vi Rose and Olivia. Meanwhile, an excited choir member who choreographed their routine, Earla (Angela Grovey), after a long dry expanse, found the first passion with Mr. Hsu (Francis Jue), whose weak heart gave way in the morning, and then with Justin (Roy Huang). The tough times of the city forced other choir members, Caleb (Andy Karl), and his family out of business. Vi Rose and G. G. come to a fight in a confrontation, Olivia's frustration with her mother is boiling, and G. G. threatens Father Dale by dismissing the church if the choir is not allowed to compete in the final with a new arrangement.

During the movie Randy befriended Walter and started teaching him how to play the piano. One day, while at the mine, Randy and Walter hang out when Manny arrives. Randy and Manny start fighting over Olivia who ends up with Walter giving Manny a bloody nose. Back home, Walter bragged to Vi Rose about the fight. Enraged by the news, he throws Randy and tells him to leave his own family. Randy, however, was able to befriend Manny and convince him to help the choir with his guitar skills.

The choir left for Los Angeles for the final, feeling very uncomfortable. Vi Rose and Olivia had a fight and Vi Rose slapped Olivia. Loud competition comes in the form of a choir consisting of cute pre-teens, with a charismatic young soloist (Ivan Kelley Jr.). But Vi Rose, G. G., Olivia and Randy drew a shared choir and they gave a lively performance, using new settings and choreography, capturing first place. The choir returned to the city in triumph. One year later Earla and Justin married and then Marcus returned to his family.

Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times describes the film as "an imperfect collection of unsuitable parts, and the strange thing is that it does not make a special effort to please its target audience, which would seem to be lovers of the gospel choir. My inner fans sent his shirt to dry cleaners to relieve tears." Owen Gleiberman of Entertainment Weekly feels that "the movie music numbers are interesting and rollicking and, in their bright, somewhat soulful way." Rex Reed from The New York Observer states, "Do not expect high art, and you'll leave Joyful Noise smiling at a knock."
