The use of the first recording of the phrase "Netflix and chill" was on Twitter post by "NoFaceNina" on January 21, 2009. It said, "I will go to Netflix and relax all night." Initial use of the phrase without any sexual connotations, refers only to the act of watching an online streaming service, usually by yourself. In 2013, the popularity of Netflix in the US has increased greatly, having collected millions of paid subscribers, increasing the use of verbs of these brands and phrases as independent compound nouns.

The euphemism of this phrase is believed to have been set in mid-2014, and by the end of the year has spread throughout the Black American Black Twitter community, as seen by many people who are now typing in chill in quote marks.
