One Day is the 2011 British-American romantic drama directed by Lone Scherfig, and starring Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess. Focus Features released the film theatrically in August 2011. It was adapted by David Nicholls from his 2009 novel One Day .

Plot

The film opened with a short scene from the "current" day in 2006, which came later, before returning 18 years.

Dexter Mayhew and Emma Morley met on July 14, 1988 after graduating from the University of Edinburgh. They spend the night together but agree to be friends only, and plan to spend the next day together, the 15th, St. Swithun. The film chronologically reconnects Dexter, Emma or both on that day for the next 18 years after they split up.

One year later in 1989, Dexter helped Emma move into an apartment in London where she plans to pursue a career as a writer. This film is a joint production between Random House Films and Focus Features. Film4 Production is co-financing.

Actress Anne Hathaway said she was secretly given the script because the film was made in England and director Scherfig did not look for American actresses for the section. The film is classed as "rotten" in Rotten Tomatoes with a 36% positive approval rating (only 51 out of 140 critics gave positive reviews), with a consensus stating "Apart from some fresh narrative rounds, One Day emotion, depth, or insight of its bestselling source material ". The CinemaScore polls reported that average movie goers gave the film "B-" on a scale A to F.
