Zimbabwe President: We can learn from past mistakes - CNN Video

Zimbabwean President is the head of state of Zimbabwe. He was chosen by universal suffrage directly using a two-round system.

The president was also head of government, as the Prime Minister's office was abolished in 1987. The office was restored as a result of the 2008-09 political negotiations, but was abolished again after a constitutional referendum in 2013.

Under the rules adopted by the same referendum, the president serves a maximum of two five-year periods. It has no retroactive effect on previous tenure that has been served or is currently being serviced in 2013.

Sejarah kantor

The Office of the President of Zimbabwe was established in 1980, when the country gained independence from the British Empire. A Methodist minister, Canaan Banana, became the first President, serving until 1987 in most ceremonial roles. The real power is in the hands of Prime Minister Robert Mugabe. In 1987, Mugabe replaced Banana as President after he revised the Constitution to make the president an executive post.

Phelekezela Mphoko is the Second Vice President (and just sitting) at the time of Mugabe's resignation on 21 November 2017. Mphoko may have acted as Zimbabwean President for three days until Mnangagwa's accession to the presidency. However, since Mphoko was not in the country at the time, and due to unusual circumstances, any official position here is unclear and may never be known.
