Richard Tiffany Gere was born August 31, 1949) is an American humanitarian actor and activist. He began in films in the 1970s, playing a supporting role in Searching for Mr. Goodbar (1977) and a leading role in Days of Heaven (1978). Early life and education
Gere was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His mother, Doris Ann (nÃÆ' Â © e Tiffany, 1924-2016), was a housewife. His father, Homer George Gere (born 1922), is an insurance agent for Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company, and was originally intended to become a minister. Gere is the eldest son and the second child. His father's great-grandfather had changed the spelling of the family name from "Geer". Both parents are descendants of [Mayflower]; Gere's ancestors include the Pilgrims Francis Eaton, John Billington, George Soule, Richard Warren, Degory Priest, Francis Cooke, and William Brewster.

Gere had a relationship with actress Penelope Milford from 1971 to 1978. She had relationships with Priscilla Presley in 1983 and Kim Basinger in 1986.
Gere married supermodel Cindy Crawford from 1991 to 1995. In November 2002, she married model and actress Carey Lowell. They have a son, Homer James Jigme Gere, who was born in February 2000 and named after the father of Gere and Lowell, as well as the name of Tibet Jigme. In September 2013, the two separated after 11 years of marriage. The couple spent three years in a highly contested divorce process at Manhattan Supreme Court. The case was resolved in October 2016. In early April 2018, he married Spanish activist Alejandra Silva.
Gere grew up attending the Methodist church. His interest in Buddhism began when he was in his twenties. He first studied Zen Buddhism under Kyozan Joshu Sasaki. After studying Zen for five or six years, in 1978 he traveled with Brazilian painter Sylvia Martins to Nepal, where he met many monks and old Tibetans. He then met the 14th Dalai Lama in India and became a Tibetan Buddhist at the Gelugpa school of Tibetan Buddhism and an active supporter of the Dalai Lama. He contributed some of his writing to this book, We Are One: A Celebration of Tribal Peoples, released in October 2009. It has been discussed about the persecution and loss of Jummas land as an example of a tragic story. which are repeated across the continents of the world, calling attention to crimes against their peaceful culture and how it reflects human relationships with nature and the ability to survive. Royalties from the sale of the book went to indigenous rights organization Survival International.
Gere campaign for ecological causes and AIDS awareness. He currently serves on the board of directors for Healing the Divide, an organization that supports global initiatives to promote peace, justice and understanding.
