The Cleveland Cavaliers , commonly referred to as Cavs , is a professional American basketball team based in Cleveland, Ohio. The Cavs compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as members of the Eastern Conference Conference Center Division. The team began playing as an expansion team in 1970, along with the Portland Trail Blazers and Buffalo Braves. The home game was first held at the Cleveland Arena from 1970 to 1974, followed by Richfield Coliseum from 1974 to 1994. Since 1994, the Cavs have played a home game at Quicken Loans Arena in downtown Cleveland, which is shared with the Cleveland Gladiators of the Arena Football League and Cleveland Monsters from the American Hockey League. And Gilbert has had a team since March 2005.

The Cavaliers opened their first season by losing their first 15 games and struggling in their early years, no better than sixth in the Eastern Conference for their first five seasons. The team won their first Middle Division title in 1976, which also marked the first season of victory and playoff appearance in franchise history, where they advanced to the Eastern Conference Finals. The franchise was purchased by Ted Stepien in 1980. Ownership of Stepien as owner is characterized by six coaching changes, questionable trade and draft decisions, and poor attendance, causing a financial loss of $ 15 million. The Cavs went 66-180 at the time and suffered a 24-game losing streak that included the 1981-82 and 1982-83 seasons.

George and Gordon Gund bought the franchise in 1983. During the second half of the 1980s and through much of the 1990s, the Cavs were regular playoff competitors, led by players such as Mark Price and Brad Daugherty, and advanced to the Eastern Conference Finals of the year 1992. After the team's playoff appearance in 1998, however, the Cavs suffered six consecutive defeats without a playoff action. Cleveland was awarded with an overall top pick in the 2003 draft, and they voted LeBron James. Behind James and Zydrunas Ilgauskas, the Cavaliers returned to regular playoff contenders in 2005. They made their first appearance in the NBA Finals in 2007 after winning the first Eastern Conference championship in franchise history. After failing to return to the NBA Finals in the next three seasons, James joins the Miami Heat in 2010. As a result, the Cavaliers finished the 2010-11 season ago at the conference, enduring 26 successive defeats which, by 2017, ranks longest in NBA history for a season and second overall. Between 2010 and 2014, however, the team won the top pick in the NBA draft draw three times, the first in 2011 where they chose Kyrie Irving, and again in 2013 and 2014.

LeBron James returns to the Cavs in 2014 and leads the team to four NBA Finals performances directly. In 2016, the Cavaliers won their first NBA Championship, marking Cleveland's first major title since 1964. The NBA Finals 2016 victory over the Golden State Warriors marked the first time in the history of the final the team has returned to win the series after trailing three games for one. The Cavaliers have made 22 playoff appearances, and won seven Central Division titles, five Eastern Conference titles, and one NBA title.

Histori

Cavaliers began playing in the 1970-71 NBA season as an expansion team. They set a record loss in each of their first five seasons before winning their first division title in 1976. The team was led by Austin Carr, Bobby "Bingo" Smith, Jim Chones, Dick Snyder, Nate Thurmond, and head coach Bill Fitch, and most remembered for "Miracle at Richfield", where the Cavaliers defeated the Washington Bullets 4-3 in the Eastern Conference Semifinals. They won Game 7, 87-85, on a shot by Snyder with four seconds to go. The Cavaliers moved into the Eastern Conference Finals for the first time, but without the Chones after he broke his leg in practice just before the opening series. As a result, the Cavaliers went on to lose 4-2 to the Boston Celtics. They made a playoff appearance in the next two seasons before undergoing a six-year playoff.

The early 1980s were characterized by the possession of Ted Stepien, who had a run of disasters as the owner and general manager de facto between 1980 and 1983. During the Stepien administration, Cavalier made the practice of drafting future picks for future veteran players. His most famous deal sent the first round bait of 1982 to the Los Angeles Lakers in return for Dan Ford and overall choice 22 in 1980. As a result of the Stepien deal, the NBA introduced the "Ted Stepien Rule", which banned the team from the first round of pick draft trade in season consecutive. The Cavaliers went 66-180, descending to the bottom of the league in attendance and losing $ 15 million over the three-year-old Stepien as the owner. He went through six coaches over that range, including four during the 1981-82 season. The team finished 15-67, and between March and November 1982, the team had a 24-game losing streak - one of the longest losing streaks in the NBA. George and Gordon Gund bought the Cavaliers from Stepien in 1983.

The Cavaliers made ten playoffs between 1984-85 and 1997-98. In 1988-89, the Cavaliers had their best current season, completing the regular season with a 57-25 record behind the likes of Brad Daugherty, Mark Price, Ron Harper and Larry Nance, and head coach Lenny Wilkens. They had their second 57-win season in 1991-92 and reached the Eastern Conference Finals for the second time in franchise history. However, between 1998-99 and 2004-05, the Cavaliers failed to make a playoff appearance. The 2002-03 season saw the Cavaliers finish 17-65, tied for the worst record in the NBA.

The Cavaliers' fortunes changed as they landed number 1 in the 2003 NBA draft. With that, the team chose the future and future of NBA MVP LeBron James, an Akron native who has risen to national star in St Vincent-St. Mary High School. In 2005, the team will be sold to businessman Dan Gilbert. That year, the team also hired head coach Mike Brown, and the new general manager, former Cavalier forward Danny Ferry. Over the next few years, the Cavaliers built a team around James and? Ydr? Nas Ilgauska by adding players including Drew Gooden, Larry Hughes, and Anderson Varajao. Under this new leadership, the Cavaliers made it to five straight playoffs from 2006 to 2010, progressing to at least the second half at a time. The 2006-07 Cavaliers advanced to the first NBA finals of the franchise, but was washed away by the more experienced San Antonio Spurs. The 2008-09 Cavaliers won a record 66 franchise titles, including a best 39-2 franchise record at home but lost in the Eastern Conference Finals in six games to the Orlando Magic. Despite the addition of four-time NBA champion Shaquille O'Neal, the 2009-10 Cavaliers were unable to return to the Eastern Conference Finals after losing to the Boston Celtics in the second round.

With the Cavaliers out of the playoffs, the focus shifts to James's impending free agent. On July 8, 2010, James announced in a special hour aired on national television entitled "The Decision" at ESPN that he would sign a contract with the Miami Heat. The impact of this announcement made many people in the city of Cleveland angry and felt betrayed. A number of LeBron James T-shirts were burned, and the famous James "Witness" Nike mural in downtown Cleveland was soon revealed. After a 19-win season in 2010-11 (42-won difference being the biggest single-season decline in NBA history), the Cavaliers began rebuilding in 2011 with the addition of Kyrie Irving with the first overall pick in the draft.

In 2014, James made the decision to return to the Cavaliers after four seasons in Miami. While the Heat has a 224-88 record during James's four-year term and won the NBA title in 2012 and 2013, the Cavaliers became 97-215 and finished in last place in their division three times. The Cavaliers made several moves to build championship contenders around James, especially getting the power of Kevin Love from the Minnesota Timberwolves, which created many fans and media referring to the "Big Three" with James, Love and Irving. The trio will lead the Cavaliers to three consecutive finals in 2015, 2016 and 2017 against the Golden State Warriors. The Cavaliers will lose the 2015 Final in six games, win the 2016 Final in seven games, and lose in the 2017 Final in five games. Winning the 2016 NBA Championship marks the Cavaliers' first title in franchise history, as they become the first team to return from a 3-1 deficit to win the Final. It was also Cleveland's first championship in major professional sports since 1964 Browns, signaling the end of the so-called Cleveland sports curse. Irving traded in offseason 2017 for Isaiah Thomas among other parts, and despite the roster's woes throughout the 2017-18 season, the Cavaliers reached their fourth successive Final, losing once again to the Warriors in a sweep.

Logo and uniform

When the Cleveland Cavaliers debuted in the NBA in 1970, the team's original jerseys were wine and gold. The first shirt features a C-haired treatment in the Cavaliers. In 1974, they turned into a classical pattern of letters and boxes identical to the team of 'Miracle of Richfield' in 1976. In 1980, the shade of gold was changed from yellowish to metallic, and the uniform removed the pattern of drafts and placed the stripes in over Cleveland and under the uniform number, the only time the name of the city is displayed in home and away shirts.

The original logo is a blaze that looks right with a pointed sword, surrounded by team names and basketball. The well-known modern arrogant logo was later used by NBA Development League Cavaliers affiliate Canton Charge. The gold plaid uniforms were used as a setback in the 2004-05 season to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the 'Miracle of Richfield' team, while the Feathered C golden uniforms were used again in the 2008-09 season, as a buildup of the 40s season that would coming from the Cavaliers. 'Miracle of Richfield' golden uniforms are used again in the 2015-16 season on a special night of "Hardwood Classic" to commemorate the anniversary celebrations of the 40th Richfield team fortune.

Blue and orange

In the 1983-84 season, the colors were changed to burn orange, blue and white. The first Cavaliers uniform under the new scheme displays the Cavaliers logo (with V in the form of circles and circles on top as basketball) in a curved pattern and the name of the player is sewn onto the rear shoulder as a patch, with orange being the main color in the distant uniform and home. However, in the 1987-88 season, oranges were lowered as a secondary color, and blue was used as a primer for home and away uniforms; minor changes in the 1989-90 season including the city's name on the blue uniform. Falling shadows are also deleted. The uniform orange version was used again in the 2006-07 and 2016-17 seasons, as part of the 20th and 30th anniversary of the 1986-87 team. The blue version was used in the 2009-10 season as part of the 40th anniversary of the franchise and as a tribute to the 1988-89 team.

Blue, black and orange

Coinciding with the move to the Gund Arena in the 1994-95 season, the Cavaliers changed their logo and uniforms, adding black in addition to the existing blue, orange and white colors. Uniforms show a blue splash in the abdominal area in front. From 1994 to 1997 the word 'CAVS' in the orange house uniform with black lines, while the numbers are black with white lines, while 'CLEVELAND' on the street uniform is also orange with black stripes, while the numbers are white with black line. From 1997 to 1999, numbers and letters changed little. The word 'CAVS' and the numbers on the house uniform are black with orange lines, while the word 'CLEVELAND' and the numbers on the street uniform are white with orange lines. In the last iteration, a blue splash is moved from the right foot to the left foot, circling the 'CLEVELAND' on the home uniform and 'CAVS' on the street uniform, with slight changes to the striping.

In the 1999-2000 season, the Cavaliers chose to look neater, eliminate the spark and add orange and blue lines that pierced the shorts. House T-shirts have team nicknames and blue uniform numbers with black streaks, while on a remote T-shirt they display city names and white uniform numbers with blue lines. They were used until the 2002-03 season. The logo used in this period is basketball on the way down the net, surrounded by a black box and the word 'CAVS' is blue with a black line below.

The "new" wine and gold

The Cavaliers switched to a modified version of the classic winery and gold scheme of the team in the 2003-04 season (metallic gold and red wine), with a navy blue added to the color scheme. The house uniform is white, with the word "Cavaliers" in wine writing with a gold trim on the front, the name of the player in wine letters with a gold ornament on the back, the number of players in navy blue, and wine and gold on the sides.. The team's standard road uniform is colored wine, with the word "Cleveland", the player's name, and the player's number all in white writing with gold trim, as well as white and gold trim on the sides. The third uniform of the marine blue team with the word "Cleveland", the player's name, and the player's number are all in white with gold trim, and wine, gold and dark blue trim. The checkered piece is a tribute to the original Cavaliers uniform from the 1970s. The logo used is a golden sword that pierces the words 'Cleveland Cavaliers' in white and dark blue, with the basketball that surrounds it.

The return of the original wine and gold

The Cavaliers debuted a new uniform before the start of the 2010-11 NBA season, coinciding with the team returning to the original nuances of wine and gold used from 1970 to 1983. White house uniforms with wine lines and gold horizontal lines on the collar, arms, waist, and pants legs, "Cavaliers" (in the style of letters) in wine on the front of the shirt, with wine writing for names and numbers, and white shoes and socks. The wine-colored street uniform with the same slimline, "Cleveland" with gold on the front of the shirt, and golden letters on the name and number, with black shoes and socks. The third uniform alternative is added for the 2012-13 season, which is gold with "CAVS" in the wine on the front of the T-shirt, the wine bearing the name and number, socks and white shoes, and the same line with the others. uniform. All uniforms have a "All For One, One for All" team motto stitched inside the collar, and a secondary "Sword C" logo on the sides of the pants leg. The logo used is the same piercing sword logo, updated to classic wines and gold schemes.

For the 2014-15 season, a second alternative uniform (and the fourth uniform overall) was added, the navy blue (call back to style 1987-94) with "CAVS" and the number of players in the wine with gold trim, the player's name on the back of the t- golden colors, and the "Sword C" logo on the sides of the pants legs. Two alternate shirts are unveiled before the start of the 2015-16 season. The second wine uniform is similar to their regular street threads, except that it features a curved mid-1980s Cavs logo and white figures in gold trim. The black-sleeved uniforms display the wine logo 'C' up front, and are famously worn in Game 7 which earned the title of the 2016 NBA Finals. Their new logo for the 2017-18 new season includes black to commemorate the victory.

Cavfanatic Uniform

From the 2008-09 season to 2011-12, the Cavaliers wear a special "mash-up" uniform (combining styles from one era with another color scheme) in select "Cavs Fanatic" Nights.

  • 2008-09: team wearing original "Feathered C" uniform but in blue color 1994-2003 combined with classic wine and gold color.
  • 2009-10: team wearing the 1987-89 uniform, but in the classic and gold wines of the 'Miracle of Richfield' era.
  • 2010-11: teams wearing an alternative uniform chessboard 2005-10, but in the blue, black and orange schemes of 1994-2003.
  • 2011-12: team wearing a navy uniform with wine and gold writing; this is similar to their current naval alternatives but with different jersey and shorts.

Nike Style

Beginning in the 2017-18 season, all NBA teams will be wearing the white "Association" uniforms and Nike's "Icon" uniforms in the main colors of their respective teams. For the Cavs, their Icon uniforms will be wine-colored with "Cleveland" on the front and the player's name is in golden letters with black numbers both in front and behind. White Association uniforms will have "Cavs" on the front, with wine letters and numbers, both front and back. All teams have a uniform choice to wear for home games. Also new will be Goodyear's right wing logo on Cavs uniform, as part of a sponsorship deal with the team.

Nike also announced that each team will have a third uniform alternative called the "Statement" uniform for the 2017-18 season. The Cavaliers' uniform will be black with dark gray stripes, a "C" colored wine trimmed with gold on the front, the names in gold letters on the back, the colored/gold wine trimmed on the front and rear, and the golden Nike and Goodyear logo on the front. The black uniform is a nod to the former black sleeve team they wore when they won Game 7 in the 2016 Final.

Late in 2017, Nike launched its fourth uniform design for the Cavs called "City Edition", which respects the city of Cleveland as well as the state of Ohio. This uniform is gray with dark gray trim, "The Land" (a popular Cleveland nickname) on the front of the uniform with white letters trimmed in dark gray and gold (like the number on the front of the shirt), with player names and numbers with white letters on the back. The "City Edition" also features a special design on the uniform side which is a tribute to the Guardians of Transportation (part of the Hope Memorial Bridge in downtown Cleveland). The Ohio state outline and the small Ohio flag are also part of the uniform.
