Inspiration
"World's Weight World Champion" tells the story not only under achievement, but the majority are caught up in recurring life, with ironic links "like everyone else". Many songs by the band center on the spiral of one's life. The title track is taken from the Barry Hines 'A Kestrel For A Knave book line.' Like the song, the main character of this book is the less developed youngster in Yorkshire. The song has received a warm welcome, and appears as Zane Lowe's 'Hottest Record In The World Today', and is also favored by Radio 1 DJ Nick Grimshaw and Greg James. The single is accredited to Jon McClure, Ed Cosens and Alan Smyth, acknowledging the work Smyth performed on the demo of the song.
In addition to references to Barry Hines, the song choir includes other pugilistic references, from the On the Waterfront film. The phrase, "I can be a competitor, I can be someone" spoken by Marlon Brando in this movie is paraphrased with the lyrics of the song as "I can be a competitor/Could be someone." [1]
