The Lion King is an 1994 animated American musical animation film produced by Walt Disney Feature Animation and released by Walt Disney Pictures. This is the 32nd animated animated film, and the fifth animated film produced during the period known as the Disney Renaissance. The Lion King was directed by Roger Allers and Rob Minkoff, produced by Don Hahn, and has a scenario credited to Irene Mecchi, Jonathan Roberts, and Linda Woolverton. The original song was written by composer Elton John and lyricist Tim Rice, with a score by Hans Zimmer. The film features an ensemble voice player that includes Matthew Broderick, James Earl Jones, Jeremy Irons, Jonathan Taylor Thomas, Moira Kelly, Nathan Lane, Ernie Sabella, Rowan Atkinson, Robert Guillaume, Madge Sinclair, Whoopi Goldberg, Cheech Marin, and Jim Cummings. This story takes place in the lion kingdom of Africa and is influenced by William Shakespeare Hamlet .

The Lion King tells the story of Simba, a young lion who will succeed his father, Mufasa, as the King of Pride Land; However, after Simba Scar's uncle (Mufasa's jealous brother), Mufasa's murder, Simba was manipulated to think he was responsible and escaped into exile. After the maturation of two wastrels, Simba was given some valuable perspectives from his childhood friend Nala and his shaman, Rafiki, before returning to challenge Scar to end the tyranny and take his place in the Circle of Life as the rightful King.

The development of The Lion King began in 1988 during a meeting between Jeffrey Katzenberg, Roy E. Disney, and Peter Schneider while promoting Oliver & amp; Company in Europe. Thomas Disch wrote film treatments, and Woolverton developed the first script while George Scribner was signed as a director, who later joined Allers. Production began in 1991 simultaneously with Pocahontas , which eventually attracted most of Disney's top animators. Some time after the staff traveled to Hell's Gate National Park in Kenya to research the setting and animal films, Scribner left production disagreeing with the decision to turn the movie into a musical and was replaced by Minkoff. When Hahn joined the project, he was not satisfied with the script and the story was rewritten immediately. Nearly 20 minutes of animated sequences are produced at Disney's Hollywood Studios theme park in Florida. Computer animation is also used in some scenes, especially in the sequence of the stag do.

The Lion King was released on June 15, 1994, a positive reaction from critics, who praised the movie for its music, stories and animations. With a worldwide gross of $ 766 million, it completed the run of theaters as the best-selling release of 1994 and the second best-selling film of all time. It's also the best-selling traditional animation film of all time. The Lion King gathered two Academy Awards for her achievements in music and the Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy. The film has produced many derivative works, such as the Broadway adaptation; two follow-ups directly to the video - the sequel, The Lion King II: Simba Pride (1998), and the prequel/parallel, The Lion King 1Ã,½ (2004); two television series, Timon and Pumbaa and The Lion Guard ; and a 3D re-release, in 2011.

In 2016, the film was selected for preservation on the National Register of Film United States by the Library of Congress as "culture, history, or aesthetically significant". The CGI remake of the film directed by Jon Favreau is scheduled for release July 19, 2019 in the United States.

Plot

In the Land of the Pride of Kenya, Africa, lion pride dominates the animal kingdom of Pride Rock. The newborn Son of King Mufasa, Simba, was presented to the animals assembled by Rafiki the baboon (with the colorful facial expressions of a mandrill) that serves as a shaman and advisor. Mufasa shows the Simba Young Land of Pride and describes him the responsibility of the position of the king and the "circle of life" that connects all sentient beings. The younger brother of Mufasa, Scar, crave the throne and plot to eliminate Mufasa and Simba so that he can become king. He cheated Simba and his best friend Nala - to whom Simba was engaged - in exploring the forbidden elephant cemetery, where they were attacked by three spotted hyena associates with Scar. Mufasa was alerted to danger by his majordomo, Zazu yanking, and saved his children. Though angry at Simba, Mufasa forgives him and explains that the great kings of the past watch them from the night sky, from which he will someday watch Simba.

The scars make a trap for his brother and nephew, lure Simba into the abyss and have a hyena riding a huge herd of reindeer that will trample it. He informs Mufasa of the dangers of Simba, knowing the king will hurry to save his son. Mufasa saved Simba but ended up hanging with danger from the edge of the cliff. The scars refused to help Mufasa, instead sending him to his death. He then convinces Simba that the tragedy was Simba's own fault and advised him to flee from the kingdom. He orders the hyena to kill his son, but Simba escapes. Scar tells of pride that both Mufasa and Simba were killed in panic and stepped forward as new kings, allowing three hyenas minions and the rest of their big packs to live in Pride Land.

Simba collapsed in the desert and was rescued by Timon and Pumbaa, a meerkat and a wild boar who was a fellow exiles. Simba grows in the forest with two new friends, leads a life without burden under the slogan "hakuna matata" ("do not worry" in Swahili). Now a young adult, Simba rescues Timon and Pumbaa from a hungry lioness who turns out to be Nala. She and Simba reunite and fall in love, and she urges him to return home, saying that Pride Land has become a drought-stricken land under Scar's control. Feeling guilty over his father's death, Simba refuses and storms off. He meets Rafiki, who tells him that the spirit of Mufasa lives in Simba. Simba is visited by the ghost of Mufasa in the night sky, who tells him that he must take the rightful place as king. Realizing he could no longer run away from his past, Simba decided to go home.

Assisted by his friends, Simba slipped past a hyena on Pride Rock and faced Scar. The scars taunted him for his role in Mufasa's death and backs him to the edge of the rock, where he reveals to Simba that he killed Mufasa. Angry, Simba quipped the ground and forced her to reveal the truth to all pride. Timon, Pumbaa, Rafiki, Zazu, and the female lion fend off the hyena while Scar, trying to escape, cornered by Simba on top of Pride Rock. The scar begs forgiveness and tries to blame the hyena for his actions; Simba spent his life, but ordered him to leave Pride Land forever. The scar struck his nephew, but Simba managed to throw it off the rock. The scars survived in the fall, but were attacked and killed by hyenas, who heard his attempt to betray them. With his enemies gone, Simba took over the kingdom when the rain began to descend, restoring life to the ground.

Then, with Pride Rock restored to its former glory, Rafiki presents newborns from Simba and Nala to the gathered animals, continuing the cycle of life.

Production

Development

The idea for The Lion King was conceived at the end of 1988 during a conversation between Jeffrey Katzenberg, Roy E. Disney and Peter Schneider on a plane to Europe to promote Oliver & Company . During the conversation, the topic of the story made in Africa appeared, and Katzenberg immediately jumped to the idea. This idea was later developed by Walt Disney Feature Animation's vice president for creative affairs Charlie Fink. Katzenberg decides to add elements that involve the coming of age and death, and ideas from personal life experiences, such as some trials on the bumpy roads in politics, say about the movie, "It's a bit about myself." In November of that year Thomas Disch (author of The Brave Little Toaster) wrote a treatment titled King of the Kalahari , and after that, Linda Woolverton spent a year writing a draft of the script, which is titled King of the Beast and then King of the Jungle . The original version of the film is very different from the last movie. The plot centered on the battle between a lion and a baboon with Scar who was the leader of a baboon, Rafiki being a cheetah, and Timon and Pumbaa becoming Simba's childhood friends. Simba also will not leave the kingdom but become "lazy, filthy, and horrible characters" because of the manipulation of Scar, so Simba can be overthrown as an adult. In 1990, producer Thomas Schumacher, who recently completed The Rescuers Down Under, decided to attach himself to the project "because the lion is cool". Schumacher likened the manuscript to King of the Jungle to "National Geographic animation special".

Oliver & amp; The company director George Scribner was the initial director of the film, which was later joined by Roger Allers, who was the male lead in Beauty and the Beast in October 1991. Allers brings with him Brenda Chapman, become the head of the story. Afterwards, several major crew members, including Allers, Scribner, Hahn, Chapman, and production designer Chris Sanders, traveled to Hell's Gate National Park in Kenya to study and gain an appreciation for the environment for the film. After six months of working on story development, Scribner decided to leave the project, when he was at odds with Allers and the producers on their decision to turn the movie into a musical, because Scribner's intention was to make a documentary as it focused more on aspects of nature. Rob Minkoff replaced Scribner, and producer Don Hahn joined production as Schumacher became the only executive producer because Disney promoted it to Vice President of Development for Feature Animation. Hahn felt the script was unfocused and lacked a clear theme, and after setting the main theme as "abandoning childhood and confronting the reality of the world", asked for a final retool. Allers, Minkoff, Chapman and Hahn later rewrote the story during a two-week meeting with directors Kirk Wise and Gary Trousdale, who recently completed Beauty and the Beast. The script also has a title that changes from King of the Jungle to The Lion King , because the setting is not forest but savanna.

The Lion King is the first Disney animated feature to be an original story, rather than based on an existing piece of work. The filmmakers have said that The Lion King's story is inspired by the lives of Joseph and Moses, from the Bible, and William Shakespeare Hamlet . During the summer of 1992, the team joined screenwriter Irene Mecchi, with second screenwriter Jonathan Roberts joining a few months later. Mecchi and Roberts take over the revision process, fix the unresolved emotional issues in the script and add comic business to Pumbaa, Timon, and hyena. Lyrics writer Tim Rice works with the author's team, flying to California at least once a month because his songs need to work in a narrative continuity. Rice Lyrics - reworked until the end of production - pinned to the storyboard during development. Rewrites are often done, with animator Andreas Deja saying that the completed scenes will be sent, only to the response that the parts need to be revived because of the dialogue changes.

Casting

The voice actors are selected for how they fit and can be added to the characters - for example, James Earl Jones is cast because the directors find his voice "strong" and similar to the roar of a lion. Jones commented that during the production years, Mufasa "became more and more of a fool's father instead of [a] great king".

Nathan Lane initially auditioned for Zazu, and Ernie Sabella for one of the hyenas. After meeting each other in the recording studio, the actors, who at the time both starred in Guys and Dolls , were asked to record together as hyenas. The directors laughed at their performances and decided to include them as Timon and Pumbaa. For hyenas, the original intention is to unite Cheech & amp; Chong, but while Cheech Marin accepts to play Banzai, Tommy Chong is not available. Thus his role was changed to a female hyena, Shenzi, voiced by Whoopi Goldberg.

Matthew Broderick acted as an early adult Simba during production, and for three years the acting voice was only recorded with other actors once, and only found Moira Kelly voicing Nala in the premiere. British actor Tim Curry and Malcolm McDowell were initially considered for the role of Scar, however, Curry left the role due to Home Alone 2: Lost in New York , and was eventually won by British actor Jeremy Irons. Irons initially rejected the role of being uncomfortable going from dramatic performances as Claus von BÃÆ'¼low at Fortune Reversal to a comedic role. But once he gets in, Irons's performance even inspires writers to include more of his acting as von BÃÆ'¼low - adding one of those character lines, "You do not know" - and animator Andreas Deja to watch both Reversals of Fortune > and Damage to take on Irons face and tics.

Animation

The development of The Lion King coincided with Pocahontas , which most animators from Walt Disney Feature Animation decided to work instead, believing it would be more prestigious and successful than both. The story artists also do not have much confidence in the project, with Chapman declaring he is reluctant to accept the job "because the story is not that great", and author Burny Mattinson said to colleague Joe Ranft "I do not know who would want to watch that one. "Most of the leading animators do their great first job of watching the characters, or have a lot of interest to animate animals. Thirteen of these watchful animators, both in California and in Florida, are responsible for building a personality and setting the tone for the main character of the film. Animation leads for main characters including Mark Henn at young Simba, Ruben A. Aquino on adult Simba, Andreas Deja on Scar, Aaron Blaise on young Nala, Anthony DeRosa in adult Nala, and Tony Fucile in Mufasa. Almost 20 minutes of movies, including the "I Can not Wait For Be King" sequence, are animated at the Disney-MGM Studios facility. More than 600 artists, animators, and technicians contribute to The Lion King . A few weeks before the film was released, the 1994 Northridge earthquake shut down the studio and required the animators to complete their work from home.

Animator characters learn real life animals for reference, as did for the 1942 Disney movie Bambi . Jim Fowler, a renowned wildlife expert, visited the studio on several occasions with a variety of lions and other savanna residents to discuss behavior and help the animators authenticate their images. Animators also studied animal movements in Miami MetroZoo under the guidance of wildlife expert Ron Magill. The Pride Lands are modeled in Kenya's national parks visited by the crew. Varied focal lengths and lenses are used to differentiate from ordinary African depictions in documentaries - which use telephoto lenses to shoot wildlife remotely. The epic feelings drew inspiration from concept studies by artist Hans Bacher - who, after Scribner's request for realism, attempted to portray effects such as lens flare - and the work of painters Charles Marion Russell, Frederic Remington and Maxfield Parrish. The art director, Andy Gaskill, and the filmmakers are trying to give this movie a sweeping sensation and an epic scale similar to David Lean Lawrence of Arabia. Gaskill explains: "We want the audience to feel the breadth of the meadow and feel the dust and wind blowing in the grass, in other words, to get a real natural feeling and feel as though they are there. It's hard to catch something as smooth as sunrise or rain falling in the pond, but that's the kind of picture we're trying to get. "The filmmakers also watched John Ford movies and other filmmakers, which also influenced the design of the film.

Because the characters are not anthropomorphized, all animators must learn to draw four-legged animals, and the development of stories and characters is done through the use of longer shots following the characters.

Computers help filmmakers to present their vision in new ways. For the sequence of "stomping contagion rombeng", several different reindeer characters are created in a 3D computer program, multiplied by hundreds, cel that is pinched to look like a drawing animation, and is given a random path under the slopes to simulate a real shepherd movement predictable. Five specially trained animators and technicians spent more than two years creating a two and a half minute attack. CAPS helps simulate camera movements such as shooting tracking, and is used in coloring, lighting, and particle effects.

Music

Lyrics writer Tim Rice, who worked with composer Alan Menken on songs for Aladdin , was invited to write a song, and was accepted on the condition of finding the composing partner. Since Menken is unavailable, the producers accept Rice's suggestion of Elton John, after Rice's invitation of ABBA failed because Benny Andersson was busy with the musical Kristina frÃÆ'  n DuvemÃÆ'  ¥ la . John expressed interest in writing "ultra-pop songs that kids love, and adults can go and watch the movies and get a lot of fun out of them," citing the possible influence of The Jungle Book , where she feels "the music is very funny and appealing to children and adults".

John and Rice wrote five original songs for the film ("Circle of Life", "Be Prepared", "Hakuna Matata" and "Can You Feel the Love Tonight"), with Performance John "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" plays over the final credits. The IMAX and DVD releases add another song, "The Morning Report", based on a song discarded during development that is finally featured in a live music version of The Lion King . The score was compiled by Hans Zimmer, who was hired based on his work in two films in the African setting, The Power of One and A World Apart and complete the score with traditional African Music and alloy elements the sounds arranged by partners Lebo M. Zimmer, Mark Mancina and Jay Rifkin helped with the arrangement and production of the song.

The Lion King original movie soundtrack was released by Walt Disney Records on July 13, 1994. This is the fourth best-selling album of the year on Billboard 200 and the best-selling soundtrack. This is the only soundtrack for the animated film to be certified Diamond (10ÃÆ'â € "platinum) by the Recording Industry Association of America. Zimmer's complete instrumental score for the film was never originally given a full release, until the release of the 20th anniversary of the 2014 soundtrack warning. The Lion King also inspired the 1995 release of Tanah Im Pride Rhythm >, with eight songs by Zimmer, Mancina, and Lebo M.

The use of the song "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" in a scene with Timon and Pumbaa caused a dispute between Disney and the family of Solomon Solomon of South Africa, who composed the song (originally titled "Mbube") in 1939. In July 2004, the Linda Family filed a lawsuit , seeking $ 1.6 million in royalties from Disney. In February 2006, Linda's heirs reached a legal settlement with Abilene Music, which holds the world's rights and has licensed the song to Disney for an undisclosed amount of money.

Release

For Lion King movie trailers ', Disney chose to show one scene, the entire opening sequence with the song "Circle of Life". President of Buena Vista Pictures Distribution Dick Cook said that the decision was made for such an approach because "we are all so touched by the beauty and majesty of this passage that we feel like it might be one of the best four minute movies we have seen", and Don Hahn adding that "Circle of Life" works as a trailer because "it comes so strong, and so good, and ends with a bang". The trailer was released in November 1993, accompanied by The iTunes Musketeers and Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit in theaters; at the time, only a third of the The Lion King was finished. The reaction of the audience was enthusiastic, causing Hahn to have some initial concerns as she became afraid of not meeting expectations raised by the preview. Prior to the release of the film, Disney performed 11 test screenings.

Upon release, The Lion King was accompanied by an extensive marketing campaign that included tie-ins with Burger King, Mattel, Kodak, NestlÃÆ'Â © and Payless ShoeSource, and various merchandise, accounting for 186 licensed products. In 1994, Disney earned about $ 1 billion in film-based products, with $ 214 million for Lion King's toys during Christmas 1994 alone.

Don Hahn explains that eight years after The Lion King got its original release, "there's a whole new generation of kids who have not really seen it, especially on the big screen." Given that movies have been digitally archived during the production process, the restoration process is easier, while also providing many scenes with improvements that cover the original flaws. An enhanced sound mix was also given to, as Hahn explained, "making the audience feel like being in the middle of a movie." However, no re-releases of the first three films achieved great success of Lion King 3D and re-releases theatrical > The Little Mermaid finally canceled. In 2012, Ray Subers of Box Office Mojo wrote that the reason why the 3D version of The Lion King succeeded was because, "the idea of a 3D re-release was fresh and fascinating, and" The Lion King (3D ) feel on time because the movie will be released by Blu-ray soon. The audience has been hit with three 3D re-releases since this year, which means the value of novelty has completely faded. "

"On Siskel & amp; Ebert , the film was praised but received mixed reactions when compared to previous Disney movies. Ebert and his partner Gene Siskel both gave the movie "Thumbs Up" but Siskel said that the movie was not as good as the previous films such as Beauty and the Beast and "good movie, not good." one. "Hal Hinson of The Washington Post called it" an impressive, almost frightening achievement "and felt that the film was" spectacular in an almost casual way with Disney's long animated feature, "but was less enthusiastic towards the end his review by saying, "Shakespeare's tone, epic in scope, seems more appropriate for adults than for children. If truth is told, even for adults it's really weird. "

Owen Gleiberman of Entertainment Weekly praised the film, writing that it "has the resonance to stand not only as a great cartoon but as an emotionally stinging film." Rolling Stone film critic Peter Travers praised the movie and felt that it was a "very entertaining music mix, great pleasure and sensation, though it was no less for the heart". James Berardinelli of ReelViews praised the film that says, "With every new animated release, Disney seems to broaden a wider horizon a bit more. The Lion King is the most mature (in more than one sense)" From these films, and there is clearly a conscious effort to please adults and children alike. Fortunately, for those of us who are generally far from 'cartoons', they have succeeded. "

Some reviewers still have problems with film narration. The TV Guide staff wrote that while The Lion King was technically adept and entertaining, it offered a song score that was easier to remember than the previous hits, and in a hurry, unsatisfactory resolution dramatic. "Terrence Rafferty assumes that despite good animation, the story feels like" manipulating our response at will, "such as" Between trauma, the movie presents a very shallow and silly musical number, a creepy comedy ".

Controversy

Certain elements of the film are considered similar to the Japanese anime television series of the 1960s, Jungle Emperor (known as Kimba the White Lion in the United States), with characters having similar analogues, and various individual scenes that are similar in composition to the show. Matthew Broderick originally believed that he was, in fact, working on an American version of Kimba because he was familiar with native Japan. The Lion King director Roger Allers claimed the complete unfamiliarity with the show until the film was nearing completion, and did not remember it ever mentioned during development. Co-director Rob Minkoff also stated that he was not used to it. Minkoff also observes that whenever a story is headquartered in Africa, "it is unusual to have characters such as baboons, birds, or hyenas." Yoshihiro Shimizu, of Tezuka Productions, who created Kimba the White Lion, has denied rumors that the studio was being paid for a stealth money by Disney but explained that they rejected the industry's push for demands because, "we ' a small and weak company, will not be worth it... Disney's lawyers are among the top twenty in the world! "Fred Ladd, who was involved early on by importing Kimba and the other Japanese to America for NBC, expressed disbelief that the Disney people could remain ignorant. Ladd stated there was at least one animator remembered by his colleagues as a Kimba fanatic and became very intense about Disney's behavior during production. Animators Tom Sito and Mark Kausler both have story credits, both claim to watch Kimba , and assumed many of their colleagues as well, especially if they grew in the '60s. But Sito insists there is no conscious effort to get a job from Kimba, and Kausler emphasizes that Disney's own Bambi as their model during development.

The protests are raised against a scene where it appears as if the word "SEX" may have been embedded into the dust flying in the sky when Simba tumbled, which conservative activist Donald Wildmon emphasized was a subliminal message intended to promote sexual promiscuity. Animator Tom Sito has stated that the letters of the "SFX" mantra (common abbreviation for "special effects"), are not by "E" instead of "F", and are intended as innocent "signatures" created by team effect animations.

Hyena biologists protest the animal portrayal: a hyena researcher sued Disney studios for defamation, and others - who have organized animator visits to the University Field Station for Behavioral Research, where they will observe and sketch the houses prisoners. - Including the boycott of The Lion King among those ways will help preserve the hyena in the wild. Hyenas have also been interpreted to represent anti-immigrant allegories, in which hyenas will become a black and Latin ethnic community. The film is also criticized for advancing the fascist narrative in his portrayal of the lion kingdom and the circle of life in which "only a powerful and beautiful victory, and the helpless survive only by strong service."
