Big Brother 1 is the debut season of the American reality television series Big Brother. It was based on the Dutch series of the same name, which became famous in 1999 and 2000. The series aired on 5 July 2000 and lasted for a total of 88 days. The season ended after 88 days with Eddie McGee crowned the winner, and Josh Souza became runner-up.

The premise of this series is drastically different from the future installment of the series. The series revolves around ten foreigners who live at home without communication with the outside world. They continue to be filmed during their time at home, and are not allowed to communicate with those who record it. Every week, every contestant, referred to as "Houseguests", chooses two people to nominate. Two or more people with the most votes are nominated to leave the house. Viewers then decide which of the nominees (which follow the format used in other countries, unlike today, with self-deciding home guests), with selected people going off during live performances. This process continues until only three HouseGuests are left, at which time the viewers decide who will win the $ 500,000 prize.

Format

Big Brother is a game show in which a group of contestants, referred to as HouseGuests, live in specially built "homes", are constantly under video surveillance. While at home, the contestants are completely isolated from the outside world, meaning no phones, television, internet, magazines, newspapers, or contacts with those who are not home. This rule can be broken, however, in case of a family emergency or passing. During their time at home, HouseGuests were asked to nominate two of their fellow peers for potential disposal, and two with the most votes to be nominated. If some HouseGuests receive the most nominations, then all HouseGuests are marked for removal. This process is mandatory for all HouseGuests, and failure to comply may result in eviction from home. The public, via voting by phone, will choose to evict one of the nominated HouseGuests from home, and HouseGuest with the most votes from viewers will be removed from home. When only three HouseGuests are left, viewers will choose which one will win the series, and HouseGuest with the most votes will be the winner. The HouseGuests compete for a $ 500,000 cash prize, although the Runner-Up of the series will receive $ 100,000 and the second Runner-Up will receive $ 50,000.

During their time at home, HouseGuests are given weekly assignments to perform. HouseGuests will stake some of their weekly budget for the task, and will win double of their bets or lose their stake depending on their performance on the job. HouseGuests is required to work as a group to complete the task, with a task format that varies based on the number of HouseGuests remaining. This serial format is primarily seen as a social experiment, and requires HouseGuests to interact with others who may have different ideals, beliefs, and prejudices. While the competition, this series allows viewers to witness the relationships that are formed at home and the behavior of HouseGuests. Nina Tassler, president of entertainment at CBS, stated "You are talking about people from very different walks of life and locking them up in a house for a limited period of time [...] You have to recognize yes, this is the show. social experiment. "Though locked in the house, HouseGuests is free to get out of the game, although it will not be allowed back into the house. If HouseGuest violates the rules of the game, they can be removed from home, and can not return.

Reception

Ratings

Big Brother 1 aired on July 5, 2000 in the US, with the inaugural season having more than 22 million viewers. Despite the high premiere, the ratings for the series are quickly starting to decline, and the series is quickly out of the top 10 slots in terms of viewers. Ratings began to decline even more following the disposal of Will "Mega" and Jordan, both of whom were seen as colorful characters in the game. Big Brother 1 was recorded to have the highest rating on Wednesday, when it aired after a very successful Survivor: Borneo . The Saturday, July 8 episode was beaten by an episode of the reality series Cops . This episode sees ratings lower than previous episodes. The ratings continue to decline, with at one point the series has fallen behind re-running events like Friends . Episode Monday, September 4 only reached 5.5. However, Cassandra's disposal episode did indeed increase in rank, receiving 12.5 million viewers. The finale garnered 11.13 million viewers, defeating the Olympics. Despite the downgrade, the official series website does receive a large amount of traffic, as live feed is available there. It was also noted that when ratings declined, traffic to the main site increased. The online aspect of the series "transforms both dynamic at home and TV show content" according to LA Daily News. It is also reported that the official website for this series is one of the most popular new websites for July.

Public reaction

Big Brother 1 is typically referred to as "boring" by critics and fans of the series. John Carman of The San Francisco Chronicle states "Wondering" Will Karen run out of Kleenex? " is about the most interesting thing about Big Brother . "Comedian Kathy Griffin (who has since been a fan of the series, made guest appearances in Big Brother 16 and Big Brother 17 mocked the series, stating" Do you guys [watch] it on Big Brother? "Joyce Millman of Salon.com felt that the ratings for the series went down because the cast was" boring ". The New York Times later reported that CBS was disappointed with this series. CBS, stated that "casting sucked" for the series, leading to a disappointing run.He then stated "there is a more provocative storyline that can be followed being dropped." John de Mol, the creator of the series and owner of Endemol, blames not only casting, but also changes made to events and formats to meet American audiences.American producer Paul Romer feels that the HouseGuests group is "too aware of the camera" and is concerned about "how they will appear on TV." Former co-host Ian O'Malley claims he estimates the series will be scanned, stating "I know the critics will probably go bananas because of the voyeuristic aspect."

After the announcement, the series was criticized for controversy and criticism. After the first season premiere, Chicago attorney Marvin Rosenblum filed a lawsuit against CBS, then parent company Viacom, and production company Orwell Productions for alleged copyright infringement. Rosenblum, the film producer 1984 , owns film and TV rights for the novel Nineteen Eighty-Four and claims the show "illegally borrows from it." Rosenblum accused the network of illegally using the Big Brother moniker of the Nineteen Eighty-Four novel and "tricking the public into thinking the classic novel writers are the origin of the show." CBS, Viacom, and Orwell Productions filed a motion to dismiss a $ 20 million lawsuit. The dismissal was rejected on January 4, 2001. In 2001 Rosenblum, CBS and Viacom resolved the lawsuit with an undisclosed condition. The decision to vote for Chen as the host of the series caused much debate, mainly because of his role in the talk show The Early Show . Andy Rooney of 60 Minutes said Chen's participation in the series was "further damage to the standard of news", and further controversy arose when revealed several lines Chen had written.

Many events occurred during the game that sparked controversy as well. The security of the show was breached at the start of the series when two screenwriters who sought publicity threw tennis balls filled with fake news - including one where the then President of the United States, Bill Clinton, purportedly called the Big Brother a national disgrace "- into the home garden after finding it unattended. HouseGuests was also communicated to an aircraft that drew banners reading: "Big Brother is worse than you think. Get out now." The event also came under fire after HouseGuest's wife and family George Boswell began campaigning for viewers to select some of the more popular HouseGuests to keep George in the game. Recently dismissed House Bruany, who was allowed to talk to Josh for some time, told Josh about this news. Various "anti-George" banners were flown over the house, making Josh tell them about the news. The various other points in this game cause HouseGuests to feel that they are depicted badly, and they are often asked to perform actions they do not need to do. George then decides he'll run off the game, and tries to convince other HouseGuests to walk with him as well during the live episode. In the end, no HouseGuests chose to leave the game. There is speculation that CBS has rented banners to fly over the house, although this was never confirmed.

Update

Despite the lack of strong ratings and much controversy surrounding the series, Big Brother helped get CBS a 17% increase for its time slot, and was finally updated in September 2000 for the second season. But then confirmed, that there will be many changes to the series format.
