iOS 10 is the tenth major release of the iOS mobile operating system developed by Apple Inc., being the iOS 9 successor. It was announced at the Worldwide Worldwide Developer Conference on June 13, 2016, and was released on September 13, 2016. It was replaced by iOS 11 on September 19, 2017.
iOS 10 incorporates changes to the 3D Touch and lock screen. There are several new features for some apps: Messages have additional emoji and third-party apps can expand functionality in iMessage, Maps has a redesigned interface and additional third-party functions, Home app managing "HomeKit" accessories -inabled, Photos have algorithmic search and categorization media known as "Memories", and Siri is compatible with specific third-party application requests, such as starting an exercise app, sending IM, requesting a Lyft or Uber app or using a payment function.
Reviews on iOS 10 are mostly positive. Reviewer highlights significant updates for iMessage, Siri, Photos, 3D Touch, and lock screen as welcome changes. Third party extension support for iMessage means it "becomes platform", even though the user interface is criticized for being difficult to understand. Third party integration in Siri is "great", although voice assistants are criticized for not being smarter than before. Reviewers were impressed with the image recognition technology in Photos, although the note was still "working in the process" with a higher error rate than the competition. 3D Touch "finally feels useful" and "works in almost every part of the OS". The lock screen "is much more customizable than ever", and reviewers enjoy that notification bubble can be expanded to see more information without unlocking the phone.
A month after its release, iOS 10 was installed on 54% of iOS devices, "migrating a bit slower" than for iOS 9 release, speculated because it was caused by a preliminary release issue that might "make some users stop downloading updates". IOS 10 adoption users continue to increase in the coming months, eventually by 89% of active devices by September 2017.

System features
Control Center
The Control Center has been redesigned and divided into three pages: one for general settings, such as quick switches for airplane mode and orientation keys, one for audio control and another to control HomeKit equipment (internet of things), if used.
3D Touch capabilities have been added to multiple toggles.
Home Screen
Apps can display widgets when their home screen icons are accessed with 3D Touch.
Most of the default apps that come with iOS devices can be hidden from the home screen and 're-downloaded' from the App Store. After doing this, the sandbox of each app is removed, which contains user data, settings, and cache. The app is also hidden from other places, such as "Today" views, Settings apps and "Sheet Sharing", where users can interact with apps from within other apps. This feature was first hinted during an interview in September 2015, in which Apple CEO Tim Cook stated that Apple "sees" allows customers to remove unused stock applications.
iOS 10 lets users prioritize downloads of specific apps using 3D Touch.
Keyboard
The QuickType virtual keyboard, which provides word completion capabilities, can predict answers to questions and suggest relevant information based on location, availability of calendar or contacts.
The "Define" feature in earlier iOS versions has been replaced by "View", and now extends its use from only providing definitions for retrieving information from location, web search history, downloaded apps, suggested websites, and more.
The QuickType keyboard will allow users to type in multiple languages ââif the user selects the desired language in the "Dictionary" and "Keyboard" settings menu.
Users have the ability to change special keyboard settings for the physical keyboard (such as auto correction and auto-capitalization).
Lock screen
The "slider to unlock" mechanism on the lock screen has been removed for the home button press.
Similar to Apple Watch's feature, "Raise to Wake" wakes the device when the user picks it up. This function requires a device with M9 or later movement coprocessor.
The "Today" view in the Notifications Center has been replaced by the widget, and can be accessed by swiping from left to right. On iPad, widgets can be displayed in a two-column layout.
Notification Center
Notification Center no longer has the "Today" view.
Notifications, now larger, can be expanded to show more information and all unread notifications can be deleted at once, using 3D Touch.
Applications that need to be updated frequently can now have live updates live.
Notification Center contains Spotlight search bar.
Settings
New Magnifier settings are added that allow the user to click three times the home button and iOS will open the Camera app with zoom.

The Wi-Fi menu in Settings now displays warnings about network security and if the network is not connected to the Internet. This is shown to the user as a small subtext under the name of the Wi-Fi network.
"Raise to Wake" can be enabled or disabled in Settings.
In iOS 10.2, the "Keep Settings" feature allows users to set Camera apps to launch with certain settings by default. Options include launches with Video or Square mode rather than Photo mode, maintains the last used filters, and retains the capture settings for Live Photos.
Music added to Apple Music on one device can now be downloaded automatically to other devices using Auto download settings.
Settings allow users the option to have a route in the Maps app to avoid toll roads and/or highways.
In iOS 10.3, Settings are updated to display information relating to the user's Apple ID account in the main menu, and a section feature that allows users to view old and untreated apps will not work in upcoming iOS versions. In addition, users can now view their iCloud storage details.
Users can activate the settings to let Siri announce who is calling, with options for "Always", "Headphones & Car", "Headphones Only", and "Never".
CarPlay
iOS 10 now allows users to reset and remove apps from their CarPlay view, via Settings.
In iOS 10.3, Maps on CarPlay adds an electric vehicle charging station.
Universal Clipboard
As part of the overall Continuity feature introduced in iOS 8, the new Universal Clipboard feature allows Mac personal computer users to run Sierra macOS and iOS devices running iOS 10 to easily copy material to and from different devices via iCloud.
As part of Continuity, the new "Continuity Keyboard" feature allows users to type text on the iPhone and display text on Apple TV running tvOS 10, avoiding Remote Siri for text input.
Other changes
iOS 10 has a new sound effect for locking the device and for keyboard clicks.
Whenever a device detects a liquid in the Lightning port, a notice warns the user to release the Lightning cable and allow the port to dry out.
iOS 10 also allows TTY calls to be made without additional hardware.
iOS 10 allows users to find their Apple Watch using Find My iPhone.
Spotlight can now search users' iCloud Drive content.
Storage is reported to users in base 10 format (1 kilobyte equal to 1000 bytes) instead of base 2, used in older iOS versions.
App features
App Store
iOS 10 allows developers to buy advertising spots in the App Store when users search for content. It also adds back the "Category" section, which replaces the "Explore" section introduced on iOS 8.
In iOS 10.3, developers can respond to user reviews, and the "Helpful" and "Not Helpful" review labels can help bring up the most relevant customer reviews.
Calendar
On iOS 10, users can now change what day of calendar week begins, as well as anniversary settings and events, and calendar types (Gregorian, Chinese, Hebrew, Islam).
Camera
Music will no longer stop playing when the Camera app is launched, unless the user decides to record a video, or to capture a Live Photo.
Live Photos can be taken with filters (previously only available for photos).
On iOS 10.1, iPhone 7 Plus receives a new depth of field camera portrait mode, using wide-angle and telephoto lenses on the phone to "make shallow portrait photos of a field with a faded background".
Clock
The Clock app now has a dark theme.
The new "Sleep Introduction" feature reminds users when going to bed to get the desired amount of sleep. There is also a new stopwatch face, accessed by swiping to the left.
Contacts
The Contacts app on iOS 10 allows users to set the default phone number and email address for contacts that have multiple numbers or addresses. The app also allows users to add and delete contacts from their Favorite Contacts list.
Home page
Home is a new application that allows users to manage equipment compatible with HomeKit, the Apple API for home automation. In the application, users can add compatible HomeKit accessories, such as keys, lights, and thermostats, and then directly control the equipment through the application.
The "Scenes" panel allows many devices to be controlled at once to adjust mood or settings. Geo-fencing activates the scheduled sequence following the user's location.
The Mail app now allows users to unsubscribe from mailing lists with the Unsubscribe key. Users can dismiss messages to unsubscribe for certain mailing lists by tapping "X" in the top right corner, preventing the Mail app from showing the unsubscribe button for the mailing again later.
Apple has added back support for HTML5 videos in Mail, previously stopped on iOS 8.
Mail can filter messages, either with unread/read, or by category.
iOS 10 also changes the way email threading works, by placing the oldest emails at the top by default. The options in Settings allow the user to return to the previous threading system with the latest message above. Additionally, a new threaded conversation allows the user to tap a message to see a stream of scrolling messages in the thread.
Maps
Maps has been redesigned and updated with additional features, including scanning calendar events for locations, learning from typical user actions, and a redesigned driving view.
Markers can be placed automatically to show the user's parked car. Bookmarks can also notify users when they last parked their car, and the Notes field allows users to enter information, such as parking garage number, in the app.
This app now helps users find the nearest gas station, fast food restaurant or coffee shop, by swiping up from the bottom of the screen. The map also estimates how long it will take to rotate.
Users can add third-party extensions to the Maps app, which allows additional functionality, such as restaurant-booking extensions to help users book a table from within the Maps application.
Users can now pan and zoom in while in navigation mode.
This app displays the current temperature and weather conditions in the bottom right corner. In iOS 10.3, this app also allows users to view weather forecasts using 3D Touch at the current temperature. This functionality allows users to view the details of one hour per hour from the area they see.
Message
The Messages app combines its own App Store, which lets users download third-party iMessage apps accessible in iMessage conversations. Users can use it to send stickers, play games, or send rich content, such as media previews, to recipients. Messages App Store has three navigation fields: Featured, Category, and Manage.
The app has been updated to include many visual effects. Chat bubbles, for example, can be sent with "hard" or "soft" animations received by the recipient upon receipt. The "invisible ink" effect obscures the message until the receiver swipes it. Full screen effects such as balloons, confetti, or fireworks can be sent. There is also support for interactions similar to Apple Watch, such as sending quick sketches and recording and sending the user's heartbeat. To use the screen and bubble effects, the Reduce Motion setting must be turned off.
Messages now allow users to send handwritten notes. This is done by turning the device into landscape mode for iPhone (landscape or portrait for iPad users) and then tapping handwritten graffiti. The Messages app automatically stores the recently used records, to make it easier to send them again. Handwriting messages can be deleted in the same way as apps removed; by holding messages and pressing Delete. Messages can also be saved as image files.
New emoji has been added, as well as additional features associated with emoji. Emoji appears 3x larger if messages are sent with up to three emoji and no text, the keyboard can now predict emoji to be used, and the emoji replacement feature tries to match the words in the message and replaces them with emoji with the same meaning.
Since the Game Center app has been removed, Messages now handles actions like inviting friends to a game.
Read receipts can now be turned on or off for each contact instead of for all contacts.
Music
The Music app has been redesigned, with an emphasis on usability. The "For You" section has been reset, with a playlist offering daily music recommendations. The "New" tab has been renamed to "Browse". A new tab for downloaded music named "Downloaded Music" has been added.

TV
Included in iOS 10.2 update is the "TV" app. This app, which is only available in the United States, offers a simple, integrated content experience from various video applications, as long as each service supports that feature. This new app replaces the Video app found in previous iOS versions.
Developer API
iOS 10 gives third-party developers access to the APIs to three iOS system apps and services: Siri, iMessage, and Maps. Developers can:
- Turn certain activities into Siri's voice commands, allowing users to speak voice questions to Siri's personal and Siri assistants returning results from their respective apps. Applications that can integrate with Siri are limited to: send messages, initiate calls, send and request payments, search for photos and videos, order taxis or transport-sharing services, and manage exercises.
- Add custom apps to the iMessage App Store, which lets users add unique sticker packets, share rich content, or interact with specific application functions entirely in iMessage conversations.
- Add extensions to Apple Maps, so apps with useful, map-specific functions, such as restaurant-booking apps, can integrate with mapping services to handle application functions directly in the Maps app.
iOS 10 allows third-party camera apps to take pictures of RAW image format. Support for shooting photos in Adobe RAW DNG format is limited to devices with at least 12MP cameras and third-party apps supporting them, as Apple does not enable features in native Camera apps.
iOS 10 allows VoIP applications to have the same functionality and interface as the Phone and FaceTime apps, through the use of the CallKit API.
Deleted function
The original support for the PPTP VPN protocol has been removed. Apple recommends an alternative that he deems more secure.
Option to group notifications by app in the Notifications Center and customize the order of notifications has been deleted.
Reception
In his review, The Verge ' Dieter Bohn writes that the new features introduced in iOS 10 are "the evolution of some of the design and interaction ideas that Apple has been working on for several years ". He writes that iMessage is "a separate platform," and although he likes the extension it means access to information from apps without the need to open individual applications, he writes that the new iMessage interface is hard to understand and that the use of "third-party apps, stickers, crazy confetti effect, and emoji all over the place "is a" nightmare ", even if it ends with" Or maybe it's a wonderland, not a nightmare.Your call. "Regarding third party support in Siri, he calls it" great ", while taking class limited apps ("calls, messaging, payments, photos, sharing apps, CarPlay systems and exercises"), and sometimes press buttons needed to complete the process. Beyond the application integration, he criticized Siri, writing "Siri does not seem to get much smarter than you remember". Bohn enjoys new machine-learning technology in Photo apps, writing that he was "impressed" by Apple's image recognition technology, which he noted was done locally on the device, but criticized the error rate, in which he compared the technology with Google Photos a step further. Bohn liked the new design for the Music and Maps app, saying that the redesign "for the better". Bohn really enjoys the new lock screen, where he highlights that the notification bubble can be touched 3D to access more information, all without the need to unlock the phone. Other small bits of new features he likes include "deletable" apps, upgrade "widgets" when 3D Touches the home screen icon, and breaks news notifications in Apple News. Overall, Bohn refers to iOS 10 as "Still a walled garden, but with more doors".
Engadget ' s Devindra Hardawar writes that iOS 10 is Apple "basically polishing a pearl". Hardawar noted that major changes in releases focused on features rather than visual interfaces. He writes that the lock screen is now "much more customizable than ever". He praised the new features added to 3D Touch, writing that it "finally feels useful", in which he likes that "3D Touch works in almost every part of the OS". With regard to iMessage, he writes that he has a "very useful" new feature, including "Invisible Ink" that obscures the text in a conversation when others may search, but criticizes the user interface, writing that "it takes work". The "Memories" feature in the new Photo app "usually works well," but writes that "they are still a work in progress". Hardawar praised the new Apple Music app, but added that "really, everything is better than the last iteration". He also loves lyrics support. He writes that Siri's third party support "really started to be useful", but has problems of accuracy. He finished by writing that although iOS 10 added features seen in Google's previous Android operating system, the mobile industry "shamelessly gets" inspired "by the competition". The summary states that "iOS 10 is a collection of useful changes to a solid OS".
In October 2016, a month after the initial release, 54% of iOS devices running iOS 10, "migration a little slower" than iOS 9 release in the previous year, results are speculated by MacRumors ' s Tim Hardwick is caused by an initial release issue that disables some devices and may "render some [users] not download updates". User adoption increased to 76% of active devices in January 2017, 79% in February 2017, 86% in June 2017, 87% in July 2017, and 89% in September 2017 before iOS 11 release.
Problem
Issue initial bricking release
Initial public release of iOS 10 on September 13, 2016 sees many iPhones and iPads temporarily disabled, or "bricked," by over-the-air updates, requiring devices bricked to connect to a Mac or PC with iTunes to repeat updates or restore the device to the factory settings. Apple quickly released iOS 10.0.1, and issued a statement: "We had a brief problem with the software update process, which affected a small number of users during the first hour of availability. The problem was quickly resolved and we apologized to the customer."
Local backup encryption problem
In September 2016, it was found that local iOS iOS backward iOS encryption was weaker for iOS 10 devices than for devices running iOS 9. Russian software company ElcomSoft found that the iOS backup process 10 skipped some security checks, so "around 2,500 times "faster to try passwords, allowing 6 million passwords per second compared to 2,400 passwords per second for the same process used by ElcomSoft on iOS 9. The company states that the impact is" severe ". Apple acknowledged the problem, saying it planned to issue a security update, but also stated that the iCloud backup was not affected. The iOS 10.1 update then fixes the problem.
Battery off
The Next Web ' s Juan Buis writes in late November 2016 that "complaints are shared [on Apple support forums] about various iPhone models that die when the battery falls below a certain percentage" , and blame the iOS 10.1.1 update. He further writes that "the original post [on the support forum] explains that the phone died when there was 30 percent of the remaining charge, and many others have since replied that they are experiencing the same thing." iOS 10.2, released in December 2016, adds a telemetry diagnostic tool that Apple can use to report battery consumption, to diagnose reported problems with 30% dead battery. In February 2017, Apple released a statement for TechCrunch , saying that the iOS 10.2.1 update, released on January 23, has reduced the appearance of battery shutdown by "over 80%" on iPhone 6S devices and "more from 70% "on iPhone device 6. In full, the statement reads:
With iOS 10.2.1, Apple made improvements to reduce the unexpected shutdown occurring experienced by a small number of users with their iPhone. iOS 10.2.1 already has more than 50% upgraded active IOS devices and the diagnostic data we receive from upgrades shows that for a small percentage of users experiencing this problem we see more than 80% reduction in iPhone 6s and over 70% reduction on an iPhone 6 device that suddenly dies. We also added the phone's ability to restart without the need to connect to power, if the user is still experiencing an unexpected outage. It is important to note that this unexpected closure is not a security issue, but we understand that this can be an inconvenience and would like to fix the problem as soon as possible. If customers have a problem with their device, they can contact AppleCare.
Supported devices
With this release, Apple dropped support for devices with A5 or A5X chips: iPhone 4S, iPad 2, iPad (3rd generation), iPad Mini (first generation) and iPod Touch (5th generation).
