Derek Lamar Fisher (born August 9, 1974) is a former coach and American basketball player. He last served as head coach of the New York Knicks of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He played professionally in the NBA for 18 seasons, spending most of his career with the Los Angeles Lakers, with whom he won five NBA championships. He also serves as president of the National Basketball Association (NBPA).

Fisher played college basketball for Arkansas-Little Rock Trojans, earned the Sun Belt Player of the Year in 1996. Elected by the Lakers with the 24th choice in the 1996 NBA draft, he spent his first eight seasons with the franchise, winning three consecutive league championships (2000-2002) with team mates Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O'Neal and coach Phil Jackson. After the 2003-04 NBA season, he signed as a free agent with the Golden State Warriors, who then traded to the Utah Jazz, which he helped lead to the Western Conference finals. Due to the health of his daughter, he requested to be released from his contract in 2007. He rejoined the Lakers and won two more NBA titles with Bryant and Jackson.

In 2012, he traded to the Houston Rockets, where he bought his contract and was released at his request. He then joined Oklahoma City Thunder for the rest of the season, playing for the 2012 NBA championship in his eighth Finals appearance. After signing a contract with the Dallas Mavericks 2012-13, he only played nine games before injury and requested to be released from his contract. He then rejoined the Oklahoma City Thunder to push the end of another season. He re-signed a contract with them out of season and played in a team-81 team regular season team for the team in 2013-14. The following season, he was hired as head coach of the Knicks by Jackson, who has become the team's president. He was fired in 2016, and has since been featured as a television broadcasting analyst at Turner Sports' NBA programming. Fisher also joined Spectrum SportsNet for the 2016-17 NBA season to work as an analyst at the studio for Los Angeles Lakers. On January 19, 2017, Fisher was announced as one of the analysts for Turner Sports' new player Only slate programming.

Fisher is the all time NBA record holder in playoff plays. While playing for the Lakers, he hit a buzzer buzzer with 0.4 seconds left in game 5 of the 2004 Western Conference Semifinals against the San Antonio Spurs, who list the NBA as the 18th-largest playoff moment of all time.

Early life

Derek Fisher was born in Little Rock, Arkansas. He studied at Parkview Arts and Science Magnet High School in Little Rock, where he was a postman in basketball.

He went on to attend the University of Arkansas in Little Rock (UALR) for four years, majoring in communications. Fisher ended his colleagues' career at Arkansas-Little Rock in second place in the list all the time in points (1,393), assists (472), and steals (189). He averaged 12.4 points, 4.4 rebounds and 4.2 assists from 112 matches and led the team in assists and stole every year. Fisher also set a school record for career-made free throws (399) and was ranked third among all-time UALR leaders in the three-point field goal made (125). As a senior, he won the Sunbelt Conference Player of the Year after averaging 14.5 points, 5.2 rebounds and 5.2 assists per game.

In 2005, Fisher pledged $ 700,000 to UALR for the construction of an additional fitness center at the Stephens Fitness Center, since named in his honor, and the establishment of the Fisheries Student Life Skills program, a series of mentoring for UALR athletes.

0.4 Shot

One of Fisher's best playoff moments occurred on May 13, 2004, in Game 5 of the 2004 Western Conference Semifinals between the Lakers and defending champion San Antonio Spurs. The series is tied to 2, and Game 5 is a contested affair. With 11 seconds remaining, Kobe Bryant hit a jump to put the Lakers up 72-71. Tim Duncan then made an 18-footer fade-out over Shaquille O'Neal to give the Spurs a 73-72 lead with 0.4 seconds on the clock.

To strategize, three consecutive break times are called: the first by the Lakers, the second by San Antonio to organize the defense, and the last by the Lakers to rearrange the offense. As the match resumed, Gary Payton poked the ball into Fisher, who managed to catch, twist, and shoot the match winner's basket within 0.4 seconds. Fisher ran out of the field, as he later admitted he was not sure he hit the bell and wanted to get out before the game could be reviewed. The Spurs immediately filed a dispute over the shot and after reviewing the video footage of the game, the referee concluded that the ball had indeed left Fisher's hand before the hour ended. The shot "0.4" counted and the Lakers won the match with a score of 74-73.

The Lakers closed the Spurs in Game 6. They went on to beat the Minnesota Timberwolves to win the Western Conference championship but were disappointed in the NBA Finals by the Detroit Pistons.

Golden State Warriors (2004-2006)

On July 15, 2004, Fisher signed a six-year, $ 37 million contract with Golden State Warriors. The two seasons Fisher with Golden State proved to be a bit disappointing. While he is a reliable spot-up shooter, Fisher sees unlimited openings without star players like Bryant or O'Neal to lead a double team. The team as a whole continues to struggle furiously and languish near the bottom of the Western Conference standings.

Speedy Claxton started more games than Fisher in the 2004-05 season, and then the new point guard Baron Davis earned was a starter the following season. Nevertheless, in the 2005-06 season, Fisher averaged 13.3 points per game, his highest average of the season.

Utah Jazz (2006-2007)

Fisher was bought by Utah Jazz on July 12, 2006 in a trade that sent Keith McLeod, Andre Owens, and Devin Brown to the Golden State Warriors. He appeared in all 82 games of the 2006-07 season, averaging 10.1 points, 3.3 assists, and 1.01 stealing while scoring double figures 40 times in the 2006-07 season.

In November 2006, Fisher was elected as the President of the National Basketball Association, replacing Antonio Davis. Fisher had previously served as vice president. He has also been a color commentator for Los Angeles Sparks from WNBA since July 1, 2008.

Playoff 2007

A few days before the Semifinal of the Western Conference between Jazz and Golden State Warriors began, Fisher stated that one of his four sons was sick, avoiding getting into further details other than saying he had to be with his family and his playing status was uncertain.

Fisher has asked head coach Jerry Sloan to leave him on the active list for Game 2, but can not guarantee he will arrive on time to play. But with the permission of their doctor, he and his family flew from New York after his daughter's operation and landed in Salt Lake City with the game going on. When they land, Fisher finds Deron Williams's starting point in dirty trouble and his reserve Dee Brown has been hurt. Jazz has used Andrei Kirilenko as a point guard and much needed Fisher. Given a police escort, Fisher arrives at the arena, fits in, and gets applauded as he walks to the floor. Not even given a chance to sit down, Fisher was put into the game midway through the third quarter. At the end of the fourth round, Fisher made a defensive defense on Baron Davis who helped send the game into extra time. In the final minutes, the Jazz led the three points when Deron Williams found Fisher open for a three-point shot that sealed the win. After the match, a tearful Fisher was interviewed, where he revealed a situation involving his then 11-month-old daughter, Tatum. She has been diagnosed with retinoblastoma, a type of degenerative and rare eye cancer, which requires three-hour emergency surgery and chemotherapy at a New York hospital.

The Jazz eventually defeated the Warriors 4 games to 1, but fell to the defending champion San Antonio Spurs at the Western Conference Finals in five games. Fisher 2's dramatic match and his performance against the Warriors were nominated as Best Moments in the 2007 ESPY Awards.

On July 2, 2007, Fisher asked Jazz to release him from his contract so he could move to a team and town that would have the "right combination" of specialists who could help fight his daughter's retinoblastoma. Jazz respects his request.

Run second with Lakers (2007-2012)

After much speculation, on July 19, 2007, Fisher officially rejoined the Los Angeles Lakers by signing a three-year deal worth about $ 14 million. He has surrendered about $ 8 million over three years, as he matured about $ 22 million over the next three years in his previous contract with Jazz. Jazz owner Larry Miller noted that "it does not look funny" that Fisher signed a contract with the Lakers, but he does not believe the owner of Fisher or Lakers, Jerry Buss, will do anything cunning. Jazz fans have taunted him, suspecting that he just wanted to get back to the Lakers.

When the 2007-08 season started, Fisher continued his role as a keeper of the Lakers starting point. He contributed a solid season, shooting 40% of the three point range and 88% of the free throw line, the highest percentage of his career. He made a controversial defensive game in Game 4 of the Lakers-Spurs Western Conference Finals, when at the end of the game Fisher jumped into the path of Brent Barry without a foul, causing Barry to miss the chance to win the game. The Lakers eventually toppled Spurs 4-1, but lost the NBA Finals to Boston.

Throughout the NBA Playoffs 2009, Fisher faced criticism about his age and a weak defensive performance against younger and faster guards. However, Fisher helped the Lakers win Game 4 over the Orlando Magic in the 2009 NBA Finals, hitting three-pointers over Jameer Nelson with 4.6 seconds left to send the game into extra-time, and a three-pointer tie-breaking with 31.3 seconds left in overtime to help send the Lakers to a 3-1 series lead and soon thereafter, the franchise's 15th NBA title. Bill Plaschke of Los Angeles Times describes this shot by stating, "After two throw-three tosses the Lakers grabbed 99-91 overtime victories against the Orlando Magic in Game 4 NBA Finals, you are now officially going to meet him forever. "Fisher's 11.0 points per game, 50% shooting on average, and 44% three-point percentage during the finals are an increase over regular season numbers and the departure from the post-season struggle to that point. He has shot 23.5% from behind the three-point line and 35.6% of the field in the previous three playoff series. This is Fisher's fourth NBA championship.

On September 8, 2009, Fisher released a book, Character Driven: Life, Lessons, and Basketball . He is credited as the author of the book with the contribution of Gary Brozek. On February 3, 2010, Fisher made a 1,000-point pointer throughout his career against the Charlotte Bobcats. On February 10, 2010, Fisher played his 1000th career match against his former team, Utah Jazz, beating Kobe Bryant to a milestone with one game. On February 23, 2010, Fisher made a point 9,000 of his NBA career against the Memphis Grizzlies.

On June 8, 2010, in Game 3 of the NBA Finals against the Boston Celtics, Fisher played a key role in the stretch to help the Lakers lead 2-1. In the fourth quarter, he scored 11 of his 16 points, including a 3-point-play game that helped the Lakers score a 91-84 road win. In Game 7, the Lakers came all the way back from the third-quarter 13-point deficit when Fisher reached a 3-critical pointer to tie the game with 6:11 left. The Lakers eventually defeated the Celtics 83-79, and Fisher went on to win the fifth NBA championship.

After the fifth championship victory, Fisher became a free agent, lowering bids from several teams, including the Miami Heat. However, on July 12, 2010, he agreed to a three-year contract, $ 10.5 million with an option player in his third year to continue with the Lakers. Although their contract offer is not the most profitable, Fisher considers it the "most valuable" option.

On March 15, 2012, Fisher traded along with the first-round draft pick 2012 to Houston Rockets for Jordan Hill. The Lakers decided to become younger, getting the Ramon Sessions point guard the previous day. On March 19, he was released by the Rockets without ever playing for them after he negotiated a contract purchase. After lightening clearing, he is eligible to sign with any team except the Lakers. Oklahoma City Thunder (2012)

On March 21, 2012, after clearing the release at 6 pm Eastern time, Fisher signed with Oklahoma City Thunder for the rest of the 2011-2012 season. The Thunder organization was called a pre-match press conference before the 7 pm game to officially announce the signing. He chose the jersey number 37, his age at that time, because the number 2 is usually taken by Thabo Sefolosha. He made his debut that night against the Los Angeles Clippers, scoring 5 points. Thunder beat Spurs in the Western Conference finals and advanced to the 2012 NBA Finals, his eighth Fisher career appearance there. Thunder will continue to lose the series in 5 games to the Miami Heat.

Dallas Mavericks (2012)

On 29 November 2012, Fisher signed a contract with the Dallas Mavericks. The team needed a point guard after a finger injury missed a starter struggle Darren Collison. She was wearing No. 6, signaling his search for the sixth championship, as he used to, Number 2 - the last one worn in Dallas by Jason Kidd - is not available. Fisher started in his first match with the Mavericks and Collison came off the bench in a 92-77 victory over Detroit.

On December 20, Fisher injured his right knee patellar tendon, requiring a two-week recovery time. Two days later, the Mavericks granted his request for release. He said the move was fueled by injuries and a desire to be close to his family. In nine games with Dallas, the team went 5-4, and he averaged 8.6 points and 3.6 assists in just 25 minutes per game.

On February 25, 2013, Fisher again signed a contract with Oklahoma City for the rest of the 2012-13 season. He fills the Thunder's opening for the third point of the keeper after Eric Maynor has traded. After being away from basketball, Fisher reflected in his career and decided to pursue a chance with Thunder. He did not contact Dallas before signing a contract with a championship contender, which upset the Mavericks officials. Fisher chose to use No. 6 with Oklahoma City after wearing No. 37 in the previous season.

On July 24, 2013, Fisher again signed a contract with Thunder for the 2013-14 season. He plays in 81 regular season games and 19 playoffs.

New York Knicks (2014-2016)

On June 10, 2014, Fisher was hired by the New York Knicks to become head coach of the team, signing a five-year contract, $ 25 million. Fisher says his relationship with Jackson, who has become president of the Knicks, was a major factor in his decision to join the team. Fisher plans for the Knicks to run a triangle offense, which he learned while with the Lakers under Jackson. During the offseason, he helped the Knicks recruit and re-sign free agent Carmelo Anthony, who is believed Fisher can adapt to the new offense. On 29 October, Fisher made his coaching debut where the team lost their 2014-15 season opener to the Chicago Bulls 104-80. On October 30, Fisher won his first game as head coach after the Knicks beat the Cleveland Cavaliers 95-90. The Knicks ended the season with a 17-65 record, the worst in franchise history.

Supported by the first round of Kristz Porzi pickups, New York from 2015-16 as a playoff contender with a 22-22 record. However, Fisher was sacked on February 8, 2016, after the Knicks lost nine of the next 10 and fell to a 23-31 record. For one and a half seasons with the Knicks, he compiled an overall record of 40-96 (.294).

Player profile

Fisher has a long and successful career in the NBA, especially with the Lakers. Fisher is probably best known for his ability as a leader, toughness, and ability to play the clutch. He averaged 8.3 points per game for his career and never reached more than 13.3 points during the regular season. However, he shot at least 40% of the 3pt line four times and 90% of the free throw line three times in the regular season throughout his career.

On retirement as a player after the 2013-14 season, Fisher holds an NBA playoff record of 259 matches played and 161 matches won. He also ranked third in the career field three points in the NBA Finals.

Phil Jackson said that Fisher is "clearly the spokesperson for [the Lakers] as far as leadership goes," while Bryant calls it his favorite team.

In the 2011 NBA Player poll by Sports Illustrated , Fisher received the fourth most votes, six percent, for being the best flopper in the game. "The fish took contact, he drew and sold offensive offenses," Jackson said. "We're glad he did what he did."

Merge players

Fisher is the player's representative for NBPA before becoming a member of the union's executive committee. He was elected union president in 2006. He supported the NBA referee during their lockout in 2009. During the 2011 NBA lock, Fisher took a more active role than his predecessor, and he shared leadership with Billy Hunter, a full-time union Executive Director. Jason Whitlock of Foxsports.com wrote that Fisher personally worked with Stern on an agreement to receive a lower revenue percentage for the players and the Hunter confronted Fisher on the issue. In a letter to the players, Fisher called the reports questioning his loyalty "unreasonable" and demanding "repeal of slanderous and defamatory stories" through his lawyers. Hunter said, "My relationship with Derek is very good, no confrontation."

Hunter then persuaded the union's executive committee to choose to ask for Fisher's resignation. Fisher did not resign and encourage investigations outside the union. Hunter's leadership was criticized in the findings. During their annual meeting during the All-Star break in 2013, union unanimously voted Hunter as executive director. Fisher was re-elected president; he was not on the NBA list at the time, but still qualified for his job at the start of the season with Dallas. Fisher's term as president ends in the summer of 2013.

In May 2013, Hunter sued Fisher and Jamie Wior, business leaders and business partners of Fisher, seeking compensation and punitive damages. The lawsuit claims that Fisher has a secret deal with NBA owners during the lockout. In January 2014, a judge rejected all Hunter's claims against Wior and Fisher, and Hunter lowered the next appeal in May.
