Tenacious D is an American rock comedy duo, formed in Los Angeles, California in 1994. Founded by actors Jack Black and Kyle Gass, who was part of The Actors' Gang theater company at the time. The name of this duo comes from "persistent defense" - the phrase used by NBA basketball Marv Albert.
Before the release of Tenacious D 2001's 2001 Tenacious D debut album, the duo had a three-episode TV series released on HBO, with episodes aired between 1997 and 2000. This episode came after the band had met David Cross and Bob Odenkirk in Los Angeles music scene - and Black featuring in the episode of Mr. Show with Bob and David. The band also befriends former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl, and this will start a working relationship between Foo Fighters and Tenacious D. By the late 1990s, the duo will continue to support big rock action - like Pearl Jam, Tool and Beck.
In 2000, they signed with Epic Records, and the year after the release of Tenacious D, their debut album featured a full band - this included Grohl on drums. The first single, "Tribute", has achieved cult status, and made the band popular overseas, especially in Britain and Australia. In 2003, Tenacious D released their first concert DVD - The Complete Master Works, which later won gold and platinum status by the RIAA.
In 2006, they starred in, and recorded the soundtrack for, Tenacious D movie in The Pick of Destiny. To support the movie, the band went on a world tour, appearing for the first time with a full lineup - up until this point, Black and Gass only perform acoustics. The film failed to regain $ 20 million in production costs, grossing just under $ 14 million at the box office.
After the completion of The Pick of Destiny's 2007 world tour, the band made sporadic appearances, especially at concerts and charity festivals. Their third album, Rize of the Fenix, was released on May 15, 2012, and made a joke about the failure of The Pick of Destiny - with a duo describing Rize of the Fenix âââ ⬠"â ⬠<â ⬠< <à ⬠< as "comeback record". The duo has been teasing animated series since 2012, and by 2018, Black mentions "part 2" for The Pick of Destiny being released at live concerts, with a joke of a new album in the form of an animated trailer, posted to the site web bands and social media a week later.
Tenacious D's music features the delivery of Black theatrical sound and the ability to play Gass's acoustic guitar. Critics have described the fusion of vulgar absurdist comedy with rock music as "artificial rock". Their songs discuss the musical and sexual abilities of the duo, as well as their friendship and the use of marijuana in a style that has been compared to the lyrics of opera rock opera.

History
Beginning
Jack Black and Kyle Gass initially met in Los Angeles in 1985, both members of the theater troupe, The Actors' Gang. Black admits that the duo are not facing each other because of the animosity between the two, as Gass is the main musician for the Actor Gang and feels threatened by Black. The Actor's Gang traveled to Edinburgh, Scotland for Edinburgh Fringe in 1989. They performed Tim Robbins' game and Adam Simon Carnage . The two became friends while traveling, and eventually became good friends, with Black regularly visiting Gass' Cochran Avenue studio apartment, in agreement that Gass would teach Black to play guitar in exchange for food, especially from Jack's fast food chain in the Box.
Between 1989 and 1994, both will work on The Actor's Gang together, and will collaborate on production. Gass and Black wrote their first song in 1994 after Black was dumped by a girlfriend, the song was discarded from the couple who played it at the Tenacious D concert as a joke and reference in the interview. Their second song came when Black listened to Metallica "One" in 1994 and told Gass that it was "the best song in the world". Gass told Black that they could not write the best song in the world but Black twisted it and said they could write a tribute. Gass plays a minor key in his apartment and both spend three full days to make a song, when it's done Gass mentions "they know they have something". The song makes this duo aware of their comedic potential.
At their first concert, at Al's Bar (now an apartment complex), the band made their live debut "Tribute", their only song at the time, and the duo also gave the audience a chance to choose their name. Black and Gass gave them a choice between "Animals or Meat", "Balboa Bible Theater" and "The Ax Ax Show Gorgazon's Mischief" (Gass's personal favorite). "Tenacious D" - the basketball term used by commentators to describe a strong defensive position in basketball - did not get a majority of the votes, but, according to Black "we forced him off the hook". The place has become a hotbed for upcoming bands due to the success of Nirvana and Red Hot Chili Peppers, so much so that the present is David Cross who then threw Jack Black in a comedy sketch comedy series, Mr. Show .
In 1995, the band supported the band, Tool, during their California legs. Black attended UCLA with director Jason Bloom, therefore, when Bloom became director of Bio-Dome in 1996, Black and Gass were invited to perform a short song in the film. The two wrote the song, "5 Needs", and this was their first appearance on screen as Tenacious D. Black and Gass also performed their song "Jesus Ranch" in the 1998 film Bongwater. Tenacious D recorded their songs "Tribute", "Kyle Quit the Band", "Krishna" and "History" and released it in a demo tape called Tenacious Demo, in the mid-1990s with Andrew Gross, distributing it to various record companies until HBO offered them a TV show based on the tape and Black's work on Mr. Show. Television series (1997-2000)
Cross, with Tuan. Show author Bob Odenkirk, continue his involvement with Tenacious D by producing three half-hour shows based on the band. The series, titled Tenacious D , aired on HBO in 1997, shortly after the episode . Show . While a total of three episodes consisting of two shorts each, ten to twelve minutes long, were produced, only the first was screened that year; the last two episodes were not broadcast until the summer of 2000. According to Gass, the series was canceled after HBO requested ten episodes with the stipulation that he and Black should release their role as executive producer, and only write songs. After the series aired, the band continued to perform live. At a show at the Viper Room in Los Angeles, they met Dave Grohl, who said he was impressed with their performance; this led to their cameo in the Foo Fighters "Learn Flying" music video. The popularity of Tenacious D is increasing as they begin to open for high profile action, including Beck, Pearl Jam and Foo Fighters.
First album Tenacious D (2001- 2003)
In May 2000, Tenacious D signed with Epic Records. Because Black's profile increased due to his role in movies like High Fidelity , the band worked to record their first album with the producer of the Dust Brothers. In 2001, they released their debut Tenacious D . It peaked at # 33 on Billboards 200 on October 13, 2001. While Tenacious D usually appears as a duo, the album is supported by a full band, consisting of Dave Grohl on drums and guitars, the McConnell of Phish , guitarist Warren Fitzgerald from The Vandals, and bassist Steven Shane McDonald from Redd Kross. According to Black, they chose to use the band because "no one has ever heard us with the band". The majority of the songs on this album were featured previously on their short television series.
Although the critical reaction varied, in November 2005, the album had achieved platinum status in the US. Entertainment Weekly described the release as "funny", and "no comedy album". AllMusic writes that the album "rocks so hard", but regrets the absence of some songs from the television show. Flak Magazine criticized the use of band plays among songs, describing them as "distractions" and "distractions". In addition, The Independent says that the album is full of "oaths and spreading" and "lost a slight slip of humor".
The first single from the album is "Tribute": a tribute to "the greatest song in the world" which, in his song, Tenacious D claims that they have done to save their souls from demons. The music video, directed by Liam Lynch, was taken for the song. This video was a success and was voted the fifth best music video by readers Kerrang! . This was followed by the second single, "Wonderboy", a music video directed by Spike Jonze. The third video, an animation depicting Black and Gass as cherubs, was made for "Fuck Her Gently", directed by Ren and Stimpy-creator John Kricfalusi.
The album also included "Dio", a song written in tribute to rock singer Ronnie James Dio, who taunted him for being too old. Dio liked the song enough to ask the band to appear in the music video for his song, "Push". An EP titled D Fun Pak was released in 2002. It featured comedy and acoustic versions of "Jesus Ranch" and "Kyle Quit The Band", as well as megamix by Mocean Worker. The Complete Masterworks , a music DVD featuring the full range of their TV series, music videos and live performances from Brixton Academy London recorded in 2002, was released on November 9, 2003.
