EB Games (formerly known as Electronic Boutique and EB World ) is an American computer and video game retailer. First established as an American company in 1977 by James Kim with an electronically focused location at King of Prussia Mall near Philadelphia, the company has grown into an international company. The parent company of EB Games, GameStop, has its headquarters in Grapevine, Texas, a suburb of Dallas. When Electronics Boutique is an independent company, its headquarters are in West Goshen Township, Pennsylvania, near West Chester.

Histori

Initially, the operation mainly sells calculators and digital clocks. Between 1977 and the mid-1990s, the company expanded (and then stopped) selling computers, software, and other related items (in accordance with the EB Games employee handbook). Electronic Boutique also operates a store called Game 'n Gadget . Gadget Shop 'Games are more themed entertainment and gaming, than business and productivity. In the mid-1990s, the company's focus shifted to TV-based video games and consoles, although many stores still maintain the PC game section.

In May 2000, to unify their company, Electronics Boutique changed most of the current EB and EB Gameworld stores into EB Games. They also announced that they will close or sell all EB Kids and Brandywine Sports Collectible Stores.

Over the years, the major EB Games distribution centers are located in Louisville, Kentucky, with two smaller distribution centers and World Headquarters all located in West Chester, Pennsylvania. With video games becoming increasingly popular, EB Games decided it was time for a new distribution center. In October 2004, EB Games opened its doors to a new 314,000 square foot (29,200 m 2 ) distribution center in Sadsbury Township, Pennsylvania. The world headquarters in West Chester remains open, but anyone working in the old distribution center is moved to a new location.

On July 30, 2001, the company operates 2,280 stores in the United States (including Puerto Rico), Canada, UK, Australia, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Italy, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, Austria and Spain, mainly under the names of EB Games and Electronics Boutique

EB Games and GameStop merge

On Thursday, October 6, 2005 shareholders of EB Games and GameStop approved a $ 1.44 billion takeover deal. The deal offers $ 38.15 in cash as well as about Ã,¾ of the share of GameStop for every 1 share of EB Games. The offer is a 34.2% premium at a closing stock price of $ 41.12 per share EB Games. GameStop decided to close the newly-built EB Games distribution center at Sadsbury, PA, their call center in Las Vegas, NV, and their International Headquarters in West Chester, PA, eliminating more than 800 jobs. Only 65 former EB Games employees were offered jobs at GameStop headquarters in Grapevine, TX.

International

EB started international expansion with the opening of three stores in Toronto, Ontario, Canada in 1993. The Canadian Division was the largest international division with 300 stores in May 2008.

In 1995, the company expanded into the UK with the purchase of 25% of Rhino game retailers who are financially troubled in the UK. The name of the chain is changed from Future Zone to "Electronics Boutique" to be matched with the new owner. John Steinbrecher, VP of Electronic Store Stores in the United States and Canada, is seconded to England to manage the chain. Save remodels, mixed product changes, and combined game video games to recover financial chains.

Electronics Boutique began operations in Australia in 1997 and quickly became the number one video game retailer in the country and the only one to have national footprint.

Although the "merger" creates a separate company from the US parent, the EB retained a 24% interest in the combined chain for a certain period and, pursuant to the merger agreement, collected substantial management fees from it until 2004, when the companies agreed to decide the remainder bond them with a one-time settlement. The GAME brand replaces the name of EB in all former EB stores in the UK and Ireland. The new company is the largest video game retailer in the UK. However, GameStop once again operates in Ireland under the GameStop brand.

On May 23, 2005, EB Games announced a definitive agreement to acquire Jump, a retailer based in Valencia, Spain that sells PCs and other electronic devices. EB Games plans to start introducing video game hardware and software into 141 Jump stores over the next few months. This acquisition provides EB Games entries to the Spanish market and continues the aggressive international expansion of EB Games.

On June 22, 2008, reports emerged that the EB Games in New Zealand would earn The Gamesman - an independent specialty game store and privately owned by New Zealand. All Gamesman stores will be branded into EB Games stores, so there are no multi-center game stores in New Zealand.
