Plot
Around the world, unusual phenomena are similar to biblical apocalypse signs; this includes the massive deaths of marine life in Haiti and a devastating freeze in the Middle East, and in each of these locations, a mysterious traveler (JÃÆ'ürgen Prochnow) opened a sealed envelope just before the event. The task of the Vatican, Father Lucci (Peter Friedman) by investigating these events, though Lucci suggests that they are all hoaxes or have other explanations.
Along with this, Abby Quinn (Demi Moore), a pregnant woman living in California, prepares for the birth of her child. Her husband, Russell (Michael Biehn), is a defense lawyer representing Jimmy Szaragosa (John Taylor), a mentally handicapped man dubbed the "God-Killer Word" after killing his incest parents and claiming he did so because of God's guidance. Jimmy was convicted of the crime; Russell hopes to convince the court that he should avoid the death penalty.
To collect extra money when their child is born, Abby and Russell rent a room for the mystery traveler, who identifies himself by the name of David Bannon. Not long afterward, Abby, usually desperate, begins to experience the terrible nightmare of a man resembling a Bannon being beaten by a soldier, who then demands "will you die for him?" about him. Abby also learned about the apocalyptic signs that had occurred, and combined with Bannon's nightmare and suspicious behavior, she began to worry that something bad was happening. He peeked through Bannon's paper and found an ancient record that led him to believe that he intended to hurt his son. When Abby confronts Bannon about this, she tells him that God's grace is empty and soon, no soul will ever be given to the newborn. Abby panics and stabs Bannon, only for him to avoid injury and claim that he "can not die anymore."
It is clear that "David Bannon" is actually the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. Abby's nightmare is a vision of the original crucifixion, and she is the reincarnation of Seraphia, the woman who offered Jesus water before her death only to be rejected by Cartaphilus, the porter of Pilate who beat Jesus.
Signs of doomsday continue to unfold, eventually causing a giant storm. Abby is connected to Avi (Manny Jacobs), a Jewish man who helps her understand these events and their meanings. Father Lucci, who came to California as part of his investigation, found him and heard his worries. However, upon meeting Lucci, Abby sees the ring on her finger identical to that Cartaphilus wore and learns that Lucci is Cartaphil himself, cursed to wander to Earth until Christ's return to judge mankind. He intends to let the apocalypse take place so that his curse will eventually be destroyed, allowing him to die.
Abby escapes from Lucci with Avi's help, and together they both go to the motel to search for the Bible and learn what will happen next. They find that the sixth sign will be a solar eclipse that will happen the next day, which means that the fifth mark - a death that a martyr tortured for God's purposes - must happen soon. Abby watched the television announcement announcing that clemency had been turned down for Jimmy, who was about to be executed, and realized that his death was the fifth sign. In panic, he summoned Russell and went to the prison where the execution would be done in a desperate attempt to stop him. However, Lucci has infiltrated the prison as a priest, with the intention of guaranteeing the end of the world can not be stopped. Abby manages to reach the others before the execution takes place, but when Lucci sees him, he steals a gun from one of the guards and tries to kill Jimmy himself. Abby jumps in the path of his shot and gets hurt, and the guard shoots Lucci, but they can not save Jimmy, who was killed by a gunshot to the head.
Almost immediately, the eclipse begins, triggering the sixth mark, a terrible earthquake. Feeling desperate for his failure to save Jimmy and the rest of humanity, Abby went into labor and was rushed through disaster to a nearby hospital. Despite the best efforts of Russell and the doctors to help him, the child's heart stops beating when Abby gives birth, thus fulfilling the seventh and final sign, the birth of a child without a soul. However, Abby has another vision of her past as Seraphia and recalls the request of Cartaphilus. Finally finding his true hope, Abby answered the question emphatically - "I'll die for her" - and reaches out to her son, who lives and holds his finger. His soul was transferred to the boy, saving him at the expense of his own life. This act of faith ends the end. Jesus appears in the hospital and tells Russell that Abby's sacrifice has refilled the Hall of Souls, ensuring that mankind will continue to survive. Jesus leaves, but not before telling Avi to remember the events he has witnessed and write for future generations.
