Wasara is a Finnish rock band from Lohja, Finland formed in 1999. They are known for their depressive depressive style.

Wasara in ancient Finnish orthography means 'Palu'. The modern spelling is Vasara.

History

Antti ÃÆ'â € | strÃÆ'¶m, Ipi Kiiskinen and Mikko Nevanlahti were childhood friends in the town of Lohja in Southern Finland, and in 1996 they decided to form a band. The band was formed as Ali Baba and took influence from various musical genres including punk and rock. In 1999 the band changed its name to Wasara and Sami Tikkanen added on guitar. Two demos were released on CD between 2000 and 2002. The first of these; Sinulle did not create the type of sound the band searched for. Second, self-titled works are more successful and get a two-album deal with Firebox Records. Their first album Kaiken Kauniin Loppu was released in 2003. Mikko Nevanlahti left shortly afterwards and was replaced by Tuukka Heikurinen on drums.

Before the release of MeistÃÆ'¤ On Maa TÃÆ'¤ysi's second album in 2005, Harri-Lempinen took over the drums. The second album was released on Roihu Records, which is a division of Firebox. Further changes with Lempinen's Saku replacing Sami Tikkanen on guitar occurred in 2008. Hehku's third album was released in 2011. The band is reportedly divided in early 2012 but in 2014 they are back together playing live performances. They remain active until at least March 2016, but no new record has been released yet.

Music styles

Lyrically Wasara focuses on the problem of despair, sadness and pain. Suicide is a common problem in their lyrics. Sometimes the lyrical loud style is Death Metal. However the songs are produced in the middle tempo with some elements of the people and may also be described as Groove Metal. Their music has been defined as the 90s Heavy Rock rather than Metal. It has also been compared to the early Amorphis. Although melancholy is a common thread, their album offers variations in style and speed, with clean and rough vocals being used.
