Xbox is a video game brand created and owned by Microsoft. It represents a series of video game consoles developed by Microsoft, with three consoles released in the sixth, seventh and eighth generation respectively. The brand also represents apps (games), streaming services, and online services under the name Xbox Live. The brand was first introduced in the United States in November 2001, with the launch of the original Xbox console.
The original device was the first video game console offered by American companies after Atari Jaguar stopped selling in 1996. It reached more than 24 million units sold in May 2006. Microsoft's second console, Xbox 360, was released in 2005 and has sold over 77.2 million consoles worldwide in April 2013. The successor of Xbox 360 and Microsoft's latest console, Xbox One, was revealed in May 2013. Xbox One has been released in 21 markets as a whole, with China releasing in September 2014. The head of the Xbox is Phil Spencer, who replaces former head Marc Whitten at the end of March 2014.

Xbox
The original Xbox was released on November 15, 2001, in North America, February 22, 2002, in Japan, and March 14, 2002, in Australia and Europe. This is Microsoft's first launch into the game console market. As part of the sixth generation game, Xbox competed with Sony's PlayStation 2, Sega's Dreamcast (which stopped US sales before Xbox went on sale), and Nintendo GameCube. Xbox is the first console offered by American companies after Atari Jaguar stopped selling in 1996. The Xbox name comes from the contraction of DirectX Box, references to Microsoft graphics APIs, DirectX.
The integrated Xbox Live service launched in November 2002 allows players to play online games with or without a broadband connection. It first competes with the online Dreamcast service but then mainly competes with the PlayStation 2 online service. Although both are free while Xbox Live requires subscriptions, as well as broadband-only connections that have not been fully adopted, Xbox Live is a success because of better servers, features like friends list , and title milestones such as Halo 2 was released in November 2004, which is the best-selling Xbox video game and by far the most popular online game for years. Xbox 360
The Xbox 360 was released as the successor of the original Xbox in November 2005, competing with Sony's PlayStation 3 and Nintendo Wii as part of the seventh generation of video game consoles. As of June 30, 2013, 78.2 million Xbox 360 consoles have been sold worldwide. Xbox 360 was officially launched on MTV on May 12, 2005, with the launch of details and game information announced later that month at Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3). The console was sold out after it was released in all regions except in Japan.
The Xbox 360 demonstrates the expansion of the Xbox Live service (which now includes the "Free" level called Silver), the ability to stream multimedia content from a PC, while updates then add the ability to purchase and stream music, television programs and movies via the Xbox Music Service and Xbox Video, along with access to third-party content services through third-party media streaming applications. Microsoft also released Kinect, a motion control system for the Xbox 360 that uses advanced sensor systems.
At their E3 presentation on June 14, 2010, Microsoft announced the redesigned Xbox 360 that will be delivered on the same day. The redesigned console is slimmer than previous Xbox 360 models and features integrated 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi, TOSLINK S/PDIF optical audio output, five USB 2.0 ports (compared to three of the older versions) and a dedicated port designed for Kinect devices. The old Xbox 360 model has been discontinued. The first new console to be released has a 250 GB hard drive, while the cheaper SKU then features 4 GB of internal storage.
Xbox One
The Xbox One was released on November 22, 2013 in North America, as a successor to the Xbox 360. Xbox One competes with Sony's PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Wii U and Switch as part of the eighth generation of video game consoles.
Announced on May 21, 2013, Xbox One now has a great emphasis on internet-based features; including the ability to record and stream game flow, and the ability to integrate with set-top boxes to watch cable or satellite TV through a console with enhanced guide interface and Kinect-based voice control.
After its release, Xbox One proved controversial because of the original digital rights management and privacy practices; while Microsoft praises users' ability to access their game library (regardless of whether they are physically or digitally purchased) on the Xbox One console without the need for their discs, and the ability to share their entire library with 10 designated "family" members, all games must be tied to their users' Xbox Live accounts and Xbox One consoles, and the console will be required to connect to the Internet periodically (at least once every 24 hours) to sync the library, or else the console will not be able to play the game at all. After a very negative response from critics and consumers (which also indicates a concern that the system may prevent or inhibit the resale of games being used), Microsoft announced that this restriction would be canceled. Microsoft has also been criticized for requiring Xbox One to update its connected Kinect device to functionality, trusted by critic and privacy advocates who can be used as a surveillance device. As a gesture to show commitment to user privacy, Microsoft decided to allow the console to work without Kinect.
On June 13, 2016, Microsoft announced the Xbox One S, a thinner version of Xbox One, on E3 2016.
Xbox One X
Phil Spencer, head of Xbox, announced Project Scorpio in E3 2016 on June 13, 2016, an addition to the Xbox One family, said it will be released on Holiday 2017. On E3 2017, Microsoft revealed the final name of the console for Xbox One X, and that it will start delivered worldwide on November 7, 2017 for a final retail price of $ 499.

Games
Each console has various games. Most of the games released on the original Xbox are compatible and can be played live on their Xbox 360 successor. Backward compatibility with Xbox 360 titles is added to Xbox One in June 2015, although titles that require Kinect or USB peripherals will not be supported.
Online services
Xbox Live
Xbox Live is an online service with over 40 million users worldwide (starting January 10, 2012). It consists of an online virtual marketplace, Xbox Live Marketplace, which allows purchasing and downloading games and various forms of multimedia. Online games on the first Xbox began on 15 November 2002 around the world. This service is still active and continues to be played by gamers.
Xbox Live Marketplace
The Xbox Live Marketplace ( XBLM ) is a virtual marketplace designed for the Microsoft Xbox 360 console that allows Xbox Live members to download purchased or promotional content. The service offers movie and gaming trailers, Video Store, demo games, Xbox Live Arcade games, Xbox Live Indie Game (Formerly Community Games), Game on Demand (Xbox 360 and Xbox Originals), downloadable content such as map packages, player images games, and Xbox 360 Dashboard themes.
August 11, 2009 update adds Xbox 360 games for download, Market Avatar, and renamed Game Community to Indie Games.
Spring 2007 update to the Xbox 360 Dashboard relocates the Marketplace to its own "blade" in order to pay more attention to the service and make it more accessible to users. Although this has been obsoleted by NXE updates, this section has been implemented into three separate sections on the Dashboard: Market Games, Video & amp; Music Market, and Avatars Market.
Downloaded content requires enough space on your Xbox 360 hard drive, or Xbox 360 Memory Unit. Selected downloads are placed in queue and downloaded when the console is turned on and connected to Xbox Live. Users can choose to send a particular download to the front of the queue for download first. The download is temporarily suspended for certain times where the game uses Xbox Live features (eg Online multiplayer).
Xbox SmartGlass
Xbox SmartGlass is a companion app for Xbox 360 available for Windows 8, Windows 10, Windows Phone, iOS, Android (version 4.0 and above) and Windows Server 2012. This was announced by Microsoft during E3 2012 and released on October 26, 2012, coinciding with the release of Windows 8. It's connected to the Xbox 360 and allows for more interactive entertainment, enabling mobile devices to potentially serve as both screens and remote controllers. Currently Tablet and PC Windows 8 and Windows RT, Windows Phone iOS devices (7.5 and 8), and Android smartphones (4.x) compatible with SmartGlass provide information like Halo 4 stats and Forza Horizon GPS. Windows Server 2012 users can now download apps from the Windows Store after installing the Windows Desktop Experience feature in Server Manager.
Cloud Game
Cloud Games is a division within the Microsoft Xbox team to help game developers incorporate their cloud computing elements, such as Microsoft Azure in their games. When focusing on Xbox and Windows games, this division will support developers regardless of the target platform or distribution channel. This division was formed in March 2018, and led by Kareem Choudhry.
Software
Xbox 360 dashboard
The original Xbox 360 graphical user interface is Xbox 360 Dashboard ; a tabbed interface featuring five "Blades" (formerly four blades), and designed by AKQA and Audiobrain. It can be launched automatically when the console boot without a disk in it, or when the disk tray is removed, but the user has the option to choose what the console does if the game is in the tray when starting, or if it is inserted when it is on. The simplified version can also be accessed anytime via the Xbox Guide button in the gamepad. This simplified version shows the user's gamercard, Xbox Live messages and friends list. It also allows for personal and music settings, in addition to voice or video chats, or back to the Xbox Dashboard of the game.

Controller
Xbox Controller
Released in 2001, the Xbox control pad was the first controller made for the original Xbox. The Xbox controller has two analog sticks, a pressure sensitive bearing pad, two analog triggers, a Back button, a Start button, two accessory slots and six 8-bit analog action keys (A/Green, B/Red, X/Blue, Y/Yellow, and Black and White buttons). The default Xbox controller (originally nicknamed "Fatty" and then "Duke") was originally a controller bundled with the Xbox system for all regions except Japan.
Xbox 360 Controller
Released in 2005, the Xbox 360 controller for the Xbox 360 replaced its predecessor. A standard Xbox 360 controller has eleven digital buttons, two analogue triggers, two analog sticks and a digital D-pad. The right-hand controller has four digital action buttons; green "A" button, red "B" button, blue button "X" and yellow "Y" button. The right house down the right analog stick, in the lower left is the digital D-pad and on the left side is the left analog stick. Both analog sticks can also be "clicked" to enable the digital buttons underneath. In the middle of the controller's face is a digital "Start", "Back" and "Guide" buttons. The "Guide" button is labeled with the Xbox logo, and is used to enable the console/controller and to access the guides menu. It is also surrounded by a "ring of light", which shows the controller number, as well as blinks when connecting and notifying. The left and right "shoulders" each display a digital shoulder button, or "bumper", and an analog trigger.
Xbox 360 Kinect
Kinect (styled as KINECT ) is Microsoft's motion sensing input device for the Xbox 360 and Windows PC game console. Based around webcam-style enhancements for the Xbox 360 console, it allows users to control and interact with the Xbox 360 without the need to touch the game controller, through a natural user interface using gestures and spoken commands. The project aims to expand Xbox 360 viewers beyond the typical gamer base. Kinect competes with Wii Remote Plus and PlayStation Move with PlayStation Eye motion controllers for Wii and PlayStation 3 game consoles, respectively. The version for Windows was released on February 1, 2012.
Kinect was launched in North America on November 4, 2010, in Europe on November 10, 2010, in Australia, New Zealand and Singapore on November 18, 2010, and in Japan on November 20, 2010. Purchase options for sensor devices include bundles with games Kinect Adventures and a console bundle with the Xbox 360 4Ã, GB or 250Ã, GB and Kinect Adventures consoles.
Kinect claims the Guinness World Record as "the fastest-selling consumer electronics device" after selling a total of 8 million units in the first 60 days. 24 million Kinect sensor units have been delivered in January 2012.
Microsoft released the Kinect software development kit for Windows 7 on June 16, 2011. The SDK is intended to allow developers to write Kinecting applications in C/CLI, C #, or Visual Basic.NET.
Additional information about Xbox One Kinect was released on June 6, 2013, including information on how to turn off the "always on" feature.
Xbox One Controller
The Xbox One console has a revised controller with forty enhancements above the 360 ââcontroller. This new controller is built to work with Kinect. The Start and Back buttons are replaced with Menu and Display buttons. It has an impulse trigger that replaces the usual trigger. The button with the Xbox logo will no longer bring up the Xbox Guide as Xbox Guide The buttons on the Xbox 360 controller do. The button will now open the dashboard without interrupting the game being played by the user. Once pressed again, the Xbox will continue the game.
Xbox One Kinect
Despite displaying performance improvements over the original Kinect, his successor has experienced mixed responses. It has been praised for its wide angle, fast response time and high quality camera. However, Kinect's inability to understand some accents in English was criticized. In addition, the controversy surrounding Microsoft deliberately binds the sensor with the Xbox One console even though the initial requirements for censors installed at all times have been revised since the initial announcement. There are also a number of privacy concerns.
Marketing
By 2016, Microsoft announced that it will hold its own Xbox FanFest rather than a press conference at the annual Gamescom Europe video game convention. Microsoft rolled out the Xbox FanFest in Sydney in September 2016.
