Where Are They Now? American Idol Contestants - Biography
src: www.biography.com

The first season American Idol aired on June 11, 2002 (with the full title American Idol: Searching for Superstar ) and continued until September 4, 2002. This won by Kelly Clarkson. The first season was held together by Ryan Seacrest and Brian Dunkleman, who last left the show after the season ended.

The winner, Kelly Clarkson, signed a contract with RCA Records, a label in partnership with 19 American Idol Records. Immediately after the finale, Clarkson released two singles, including the coronation song, "A Moment Like This". "A Moment Like This" went on to break the record of thirty-eight years held by The Beatles for the biggest jump of the song to number one on the Billboard Hot 100. It jumped from number fifty-two to number one in just one week. He held that record for five years but he reclaimed the record in 2009 with his hit single "My Life Would Suck Without You" when jumping from number ninety-seven to number one. Clarkson has enjoyed a successful recording career since winning, with multi-platinum albums, a number of Top 10 hit singles and three Grammy Awards. Runner-up Justin Guarini also signed a contract with RCA Records, eventually debuting the album in 2003 after the end of season 2. RCA dropped him shortly after his debut. In addition to Clarkson and Guarini, also signed are Nikki McKibbin, Tamyra Gray, R. J. Helton, and Christina Christian.

After the final, a special show in Las Vegas was also featured on 23 September 2002 in which 30 contestants made the initial cuts of the judges performed during a two-hour concert.

The show inspired a 2003 musical, From Justin to Kelly, featuring Kelly Clarkson and Justin Guarini.

Audisi regional

Auditions were held in New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas, Miami, Atlanta, and Seattle in the spring of 2002, and about 10,000 attended the auditions.

One of the most prominent auditions of the season was Tamika Bush who objected to the judges' criticism and their pronunciation of his name. He was then invited back to criticize the contestant's semifinal performance. Kristin Holt, who auditioned in Dallas, was put in the Hollywood round, but in her busy time to embrace the judges, fell and slipped under the jury table.

Kelly Clarkson is famous for missing the audition episode, and she remains the only winner whose auditions are not aired in her original broadcast. The other 10 finalists in Season 1 whose auditions are not shown are Nikki McKibbin and EJ Day.

Audition Structure

There are usually three stages in the audition process in each season, the first stage is the advertised open call audition. At this stage, the auditors each sing briefly in groups of five in front of voters, although some may be asked to sing further. Most of those present were eliminated at this stage with only a small number of auditions selected to proceed further. In the second half they sing in front of executive producers and more are eliminated. In the next few years, the next round may be added before this audition round. In the last round those who survived the first two stages of singing in front of the jury and this is the audition shown on television. Those who get at least two "yes" votes from three judges then receive gold tickets to Hollywood.

In the first season, the second and third stages of the audition can take place in one day, but in subsequent seasons each stage of the audition can take place on separate days. The initial audition venue does not need to be a final audition venue in front of judges, and in later seasons, up to three separate places can be used for auditions in every city. The venue and date of the second audition in front of the manufacturer are not specifically listed on these pages. Initially there was a fourth judge, a monkey who would react to the singing of the cast for comic effects. The monkey judge is only present on the first day of the audition, and edited from the first episode before it airs. At the start of the season, the entire audition process in each city takes place within a relatively short span of 3 days in the case of Season 1, but becomes progressively extended in the later seasons until the return date may be several weeks after the initial audition.

Hollywood Week

The Hollywood week round was held at the Pasadena Civic Center where 121 contestants competed for a place in the finals. The first contestants appeared on stage in groups of 9 or 10 but performed solo without being accompanied, and those who did not impress the judges were cut off after the group completed their respective performances. 65 is selected to proceed to the next round. The singers are expected to learn their songs that night and do the next day in groups of three. Girls and boys are separated and given a crash course to learn their song, which is "My Little Prayer" by Dionne Warwick for girls and "For Once in My Life" for boys. But many often forget the lyrics. Once again those who failed to impress were cut short after their appearance. 45 managed to reach the next round, and chunk 20 was given a last chance to voice their opinions to the judge before leaving.

In the final round, the remaining 45 were given a new song to learn and each performed solo and acappella. 30 contestants will be selected after this round. In this round Justin Guarini made the jury and his fellow contestants impressed. Top 15 first announced, the judge then chose 15 more than 30 the rest. 30 is divided into two groups and the judge then goes to each group to announce the selected group.

Delano Cagnolatti was originally among those who were announced as the Top 30, but he was later disqualified for falsifying his age, and became the first person to be disqualified on American Idol. He was replaced by EJay Day.

Semi-final

The 30 contestants who reached this stage of the season were named in the show as finalists.

Prior to their performances, the contestants took part in an intensive music workshop where they were given vocal coaching by Debra Byrd and a suggestion by the stylist. The contestants were held in the Red Room before they each appeared to perform solos with piano accompaniment. No audience in the studio at this stage and the show has been recorded. The audience voted after each round of the show, and the result of the ballot was announced the next day in person. A total of 3.3 million votes were given during the first week of voting.

Below are three semi-final groups with contestants listed in the order of their performance. In each group, three people advance to the next round, based on votes by viewers.

    Controversy

It was revealed during the season that about 100 phone-phreak hackers with hardware and power-calling software were able to put as many as 10,000 voices overnight from one phone line at the touch of a button. However, FremantleMedia, which produced the event, argues that hackers have a 'statistically insignificant' effect on voting. Simon Cowell also confirmed that the unexpected expulsion of Tamyra Gray from the show only reinforced the opinions of the producers that the vote was fair. Nevertheless, concerns arise about the possibility of injustice in rigorous voting situations. Ken Warwick later said in Season 5 that the equipment was placed thereafter to address the issue but has never detected such a problem since.

Idol contestants are reported to have signed a 'thick phone book' contract which gives manufacturers' absolute discretion to select the winner and change the rules. But producer Nigel Lythgoe says that the contract should anticipate every possible situation, and is not meant to put up a show to support any contestant.

Controversy erupted when Season 1 winner Kelly Clarkson was invited to sing "The Star-Spangled Banner" in a deal arranged by her then management company, 19 Entertainment, on a special anniversary for the first anniversary of the 9/11 attacks at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington. Some critics suggest that Clarkson's appearance will turn a sad national sorrow into a "gigantic promotion opportunity". Kelly Clarkson himself considered withdrawing from the warning, saying, "I think it's a bad idea... If anyone thinks I'm trying to market anything, well, that's horrible." and added "I will not do it." But he can not withdraw from the event.
