Concepts and creations

Stephenie Meyer states that Edward's original concept stems from the dream he has, where a "pretty girl" and "vampire... who are so beautiful, sparkling... are doing intense conversations in the meadows of the forest." In this dream , the couple "are discussing the difficulties attached to the fact that... they fall in love with each other while... the vampire is very interested in the scent of his blood, and has difficulty holding back the time, himself from killing him." He chose the name "Edward" because he thought it was "a name that was once considered romantic, but has fallen from popularity for decades". Meyer says that Edward is a combination of three of his favorite men - Edward Fitzwilliam Darcy of Pride and Prejudice, and Gilbert Blythe of Anne of Green Gables - especially Edward Rochester, who, like Edward Cullen, saw himself as a "monster". The recurring theme in the series, especially in the first three books, is that Edward keeps trying to unintentionally hurt Bella, due to his vampire nature.

Appearance

Dusk

In Twilight, Edward meets Bella Swan, a human girl whose minds he can not read, and whose blood is very sweet to him. Edward fights the growing interest for Bella, but after saving his life on several occasions, he gives up and eventually falls in love with her. Edward admits to Bella that he is a vampire, and that although he defended the physical body of a seventeen-year-old boy, he was actually born on June 20, 1901. His adoptive father, Carlisle Cullen, turned him into a vampire in 1918. to prevent him dying in the epidemic of Spanish influenza in Chicago, Illinois at the request of Edward's mother begging him to do anything to save her. Carlisle instilled in her an unusual sense of morality in most vampires, and important to her lifestyle is the refusal to regard human beings as food.

However, Edward constantly warns Bella not to be with her, thinking her life is risky if she keeps getting along with her. Bella's love and self-confidence in holding off Edward caused her to ignore her warning, even after she became the target of James's vampire. Unlike the Cullen family, which is a "vegetarian" vampire (committed to feeding only animals), James regularly eats people and will not stop until he drinks Bella's blood. With the help of his family, Edward is able to save Bella from James's prediction, but how to ensure Bella's continuing safety remains an open question.

New Moon

In New Moon , Edward's fear of Bella's security increases as he cuts his finger and is almost attacked by his brother Jasper. In an effort to protect her, she assures him that she no longer loves him, and moves with her family, leaving Bella heartbroken. Edward found it hard to live without Bella, and became very depressed at the prospect of a long and meaningless life. After he mistakenly learned from his sister Rosalie that Bella had committed suicide, Edward tried to convince a group of Italian vampires, the Volturi, to kill him. Alice with his sister Alice, Bella rushes to Italy and stops Edward before the Volturi can destroy it.

Edward explains why he's gone and apologizes to Bella. She finally forgives him completely, and they continue their relationship as if Edward never left, with the exception that Bella has an unbreakable bond with a werewolf named Jacob Black. Bella managed to find Edward's family support on turning her into a vampire. While Edward is angry at the prospect, he then agrees to change himself if he agrees to marry him first.

Eclipse

In Eclipse , Bella agrees to marry Edward on condition she will make love to her while she is still human. Edward finally relents and agrees, on the condition that it will only happen after they get married. The plot is driven by the intrigue of the Victorian vampire, who, taking revenge for the death of his partner, James, is chasing Bella and creating new vampires to build up troops. A cease-fire was made between the Cullens and the Native-American werewolf pack led by Sam Uley and Jacob Black, a friend of Bella who was there for him when Edward broke his heart. However, the ceasefire was threatened when Bella realized that Jacob meant more to her than she thought. In the end, Edward accepts that Bella cares for Jacob and manages to destroy Victoria, and Bella admits that Edward is the most important person in her life. Edward tells Bella that they might try making love before they get married, as she realizes that she spent too much of her life trying to please others. However, he refuses his offer and agrees to do the things Edward wants at first: marry, make love, and then become a vampire.

Breaking Dawn

Breaking Dawn sees Edward and Bella getting married. Bella is pregnant on their honeymoon, and the rapid growth of a half human fetus, half a vampire quickly impacts on Bella's health. Edward tries to force her to have an abortion to save her own life. However, Bella feels a bond with her unborn child and insists on giving birth. Edward also feels love for his baby, after he hears his thoughts and learns that her baby loves Bella in return. Bella almost dies in an emergency c-section, but Edward manages to give her daughter and then injects Bella's heart with her poison, healing the wound by turning it into a perennial vampire. During Bella's painful transformation, Jacob instilled in their baby girl, Renesmee.

After a vampire named Irina Renesmee mistakes for a perpetual vampire child - a forbidden creation in the vampire world - the Volturi arrive to destroy the Cullens. Edward stands up with Bella and his allies to convince the Volturi that Renesmee is not an immortal child and poses no threat to their existence. After the Volturi leave, Edward and Bella feel free to live their lives in peace with their daughter.

Characterization

Edward is portrayed in the book as being charming, polite, persistent, and very stubborn. She is very protective of Bella and puts her safety, humanity, and well-being before anything else. He often over-analyzes the situation and has a tendency to over-react, especially in situations where Bella's safety is at risk. He retained some outdated speech from his human life in the early 20th century. Edward sees himself as a monster, and after falling in love with Bella, he is so hoping that he is a human, not a vampire.

Physical appearance

Like all vampires in the Twilight series, Edward is described as a very beautiful creature. At various points in the series, Bella compares it to the mythical Greek god Adonis. Her skin was "like marble" - very pale, ice cold, and glistening in the sun. She describes her facial features as a perfect cheekbones and a high angle, a strong jaw, a straight nose, and full lips. Her hair, which was always messy, retained the unusual bronze color that she inherited in her human life from her biological mother. His eyes, once green, are now described as topaz. His appearance changed if he went too long without eating: his eyes became dark, became almost black, and a purple bruise appeared under his eyes. Edward is 6'2 ", and has a slim but muscular body.

Vampiric and personal interests

Edward, like all vampires in the Twilight series, has super stamina, feelings, mentality, and agility, as well as night healing and night vision factors. His superhuman strength allows him to conquer his prey, uproot trees, throw cars, and destroy metal. His body tissue is stronger than granite, making it more durable and tougher than humans and contributes little to his weight. He is described as a beautiful inhuman creature with a smooth and perfect appearance. The aroma and his voice are so tempting to Bella, so much so that she sometimes sends her to completely pure daze by accident. In Twilight, Edward explains that like any other vampire, he does not need to breathe, although he chooses to do it out of habit and is therefore very helpful to kiss his environment. He can not digest ordinary food, and compares his appeal to the prospect of eating poop for the common man. Like any other vampire, Edward can not sleep.

In addition to the traits he shares with fellow vampires, Edward has a certain ability that is his only. He has super superior human speed compared to other vampires and is the fastest Cullens, able to outrun them. Edward was also telepathic, capable of reading anyone's mind within a few miles of himself; Bella is the only exception to this rule, which Meyer states is because Bella has a very personal mind. Edward also retained some traditional mindsets and patterns of conversation dated from human life in the early 20th century.

Edward is a musical, capable of playing the piano like a virtuoso. He enjoys a wide variety of music, including classical music, jazz, progressive metal, alternative rock, and punk rock, but does not like the country. He prefers indie rock to mainstream, and appreciates rock and classical music alike. He mentioned in Twilight that he liked music from the fifties better than the sixties, disliked the seventies, and said the eighties were "okay".

Edward's hobby is collecting cars. He has Volvo S60 R and Aston Martin V12 Vanquish as a "special event" car. He also gave his sister Alice Porsche 911 Turbo as a gift at Eclipse . He buys a motorcycle to ride with Bella, but gives it to Jasper after he realizes that riding a motorcycle is a hobby he enjoys with Jacob.

Casting

Before Edward's role was cast for the 2008 film Twilight, Meyer argued that, although Edward "Undeniably the most difficult character to cast, [he] is also the one I am most excited about. The only actor the one I've seen that I think can get close to pulling Edward Cullen is.... (drumroll).... Henry Cavill. "When the film was chosen by Summit Entertainment in July 2007, Meyer stated that; "The most disappointing thing for me is my perfect loss of Edward", because Cavill is 24 years old, and therefore too old to realistically fill that role. Meyer reports on his website that the four most popular fans suggestions for actors to play Edward are Hayden Christensen, Robert Pattinson, Orlando Bloom, and Gerard Way. On December 11, 2007, it was announced that Pattinson, known for his role as Cedric Diggory in the Harry Potter movies, had been instrumental in the role. Erik Feig, Production President of Summit Entertainment, stated: "It is always a challenge to find the right actor for a part that has lived so clearly in the imagination of the readers but we take that responsibility seriously and confidently, with Rob Pattinson, that we have found Edward is perfect for our Bella in Twilight. Meyer states that; "I'm happy with Summit's choice for Edward. There are very few actors who can look dangerous and beautiful at the same time, and even less that I can picture in my head as Edward." Robert Pattinson will be amazing.

Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke told the casting process that "[everyone] had the ideal vision of Edward, they were fanatics [about whom I would throw.] Like, old ladies "It's better for you to do it right." He reveals that he was initially overwhelmed by Pattinson's photo, but said his audition, which is a love scene with Christian Stewart's opponent: "It's electric. It will be good. ' "Pattinson has admitted; "I do not know how to play a role when I get in, and it's a good thing to find during the audition.I really wanted it after that, but I do not even know what it is.I have not really read the books. from that, 'I want this job.' That's pretty much because of Christianity. "In early 2008, Pattinson talked about fans 'reaction to his casting, revealing Entertainment Weekly that" I stopped reading [fansites and blogs] after I saw the signature saying' Please, people others. '"He reveals to the Evening Standard ; "The books have a lot of followers, and I've got lots of letters from angry fans telling me that I can not play Edward because I'm Diggory.

Development

After April's April 2008 visit, Meyer argues that Pattinson and Stewart have developed such good chemistry, "can cause hyperventilation". Pattinson reveals that Meyer had given him an early copy of Midnight Sun - recounting the events of Twilight, narrated from Edward's point of view. He explains that: "That's what I love about the job, because that guy does not really exist that much, so you can make whatever you want. Then, when I find there is another book from Edward's perspective, [I read it and it turns out] we have the same perspective! "In preparation for the role, Pattinson wrote a journal entry as Edward and distanced from his friends and family, explaining that he" wanted to feel his alienation ". Physically, it reveals it; "I should have gotten a six-pack, but it did not really work." One scene in this story sees Edward, a talented pianist, composing a bedtime song for Bella. Pattinson was given the opportunity to submit a composition to be considered for this scene, with Hardwicke stating; "I told him he had to write one, and let's see if we can make it work, because that would be so cool if it was a Rob song. He's a beautiful musician, a very creative soul, very similar to Edward. reading the most interesting things, and seeing the most interesting films, and being very introspective and diving into existential self. "Meyer was approved; "If Robert could write a lullaby, that would add some mystique to the movie, would not it?" While the two compositions of Pattinson are featured in the final film, the lullabies finally selected were composed by Carter Burwell.

In April 2008, Hardwicke, in a turn of his initial dissatisfied reaction when he first saw Pattinson's photo, was enthusiastic; "The great thing about him is that he really [...] feels like he's another world.I mean, he does not look like a normal guy.And when you read that book, you think, 'Who on this planet can fit with this description? 'But I think he knows. He just got a sculptured face like the picture exactly as it was portrayed in the book. When you read about carved cheeks and carved jawbones and everything, it's like,' Wow Is he writing this for Rob? ' Pattinson, in a detailed interview on how he views character, claims to have incorporated the Rebel Without a Cause aspect into his portrayal of Edward, judging: "I think the thing I find interesting is that he is basically a hero of but strongly deny that he is a hero. As at every point even when he's doing heroic things, he still thinks that he's the most egoistic [...] evil creature around. [..] He refuses to accept Bella's love for her but at the same time can not help but just the kind who need it, which is an important type of storyline. "Appeared in ComicCon in July 2008 when the film was in postproduction, Pattinson suspected the Twilight experience as:" weird. You know that is basically a book. This book has so many obsessive, obsessive fans. This is weird because people directly connect you with a direct character rather than you as an actor. "Pattinson imitated his role as Edward in all of the Twilight sequels .

In an interview, Pattinson admitted that he had never had any formal training on how to make his American accent; "... I just grew up watching American movies... I kind of learned how to act, or whatever, from American movies.

Reception

Larry Carroll for MTV Film considered Edward and Bella "an iconic love story for the whole generation", while Kirkus cites Edward's portrayal in Twilight as "too Byronic". Edward Cullen is also ranked # 5 on Forbes' list of the 10 Most Powerful Vampires in Hollywood. Entertainment Weekly named it "one of the greatest characters in the last 20 years" and described it as "the literary influence and love of girls and women everywhere for a long time to come."

Since the release of the Twilight series, Edward's character has developed a small following, with millions of loyal fans, mostly women, worldwide. However, while the character is referred to as "the adolescent girl's obsession", some criticism of her character, especially the allegations of sexism, has emerged. Gina R. Dalfonzo of the Online National Overview describes Edward's character as mentally unstable and "predator", using examples of behaviors such as spying on Bella while he sleeps, eavesdropping on his conversations, dictating his friends' choices, and prompting him to cheat his father as a reason why Dalfonzo believes he is "one of the best candidates of modern fiction for containment orders."
