Inhumans Marvel , or just Inhumans , is an American television series created for ABC by Scott Buck, based on Marvel Comics race of the same name. It is set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), sharing continuity with films and other television series from the franchise. The series is the Marvel and IMAX Entertainment project, produced by ABC Studios and Marvel Television in collaboration with Devilina Productions. Buck served as showrunner.
The series focuses on Black Bolt, described by Anson Mount, and other members of the Inhuman Kingdom Family. Serinda Swan, Ken Leung, Eme Ikwuakor, Isabelle Cornish, Ellen Woglom, and Iwan Rheon also starred. Marvel Studios announced the Inhumans movie in 2014 as part of their Phase Three movie sequence, with the species first introduced to MCU at the Marvel SHIELD Agent. Movies have been removed from Marvel Studios row in April 2016, and the series < i> Inhumans was announced in November, to be partly filmed using IMAX cameras. Buck joined the series in October, and Mount casted in February 2017. Filming took place from March to June 2017, at the former Naval Air Station Barbers Point airfield in Kalaeloa, Hawaii and various locations on the island of Oahu.
Inhumans debuted on IMAX's screen on September 1, 2017, the first live-action television series to debut at IMAX. The theater performance lasted for two weeks, before the series premiered on ABC on September 29th and lasted for eight episodes, ending on November 10th. The series was greeted with unfavorable reviews and low television ratings, and was canceled by ABC in May 2018.

Premise
A 2,000 pound friend of Crystal (910 kg) teleporting Lockjaw dog also appeared in the series, made through CGI. ReinÃÆ'à © stated that "no one has done a full CG character on the previous TV series, so Lockjaw is the first one. It's a big responsibility for all of us." The mountain is called Lockjaw "sidekick silly", but feels that it has been integrated into the plot rather than simply used as a comic relief. Buck feels Lockjaw's storyline will be "always quite simple" as a way of ensuring the authors "do not try to pretend that he is anything but a dog" and drag the focus away from other characters. The initial design for Lockjaw makes it bigger than its last look, closer to the "Mini Cooper size".

Production
Development
A film based on Inhumans was first mentioned being under development in the March 2011 trade report. In October 2014, Marvel Studios officially announced the film as part of the Third Phase of Marvel Cinematic Universe, with release date November 2, 2018. Producer Kevin Feige said , "We truly believe that Inhumans can be a franchise or a series of franchises for themselves. They have dozens of incredible strengths and social structures. With our 20th film at Marvel Cinematic Universe we want to continue to perfect what's in this universe. "The following December, an inhuman species was introduced during the second season of Marvel Agent from SHIELD Yang started the story line that reappeared throughout the series moving forward. In April 2016, the film was officially taken from Marvel's release schedule, though it was not immediately canceled. After the cancellation of the film, Jed Whedon, executive producer and showrunner at Agent of SHIELD, noted that the series was "slightly more free" and "able to do a little more" with the species entering the fourth season, the potential of introducing some "classic" Inhumans.
In May 2016, after ABC canceled Marvel's Agent Carter and continued Marvel's Most Wanted, ABC Entertainment's president Channing Dungey said Marvel and ABC were looking for a "series that would be beneficial to both brand "move forward. In November, Feige said that "Inhumans will happen with certainty, I do not know when, I think it happens on television, and I think when we get to Stage 4 as I always say, it can happening as a movie. "Shortly after, Marvel Television and IMAX Corporation announced the eight-episode TV series Inhumans , which will be produced jointly with ABC Studio and broadcast on ABC; Marvel Studios decided that her character was more suited to television, and the series would be better than trying to fit some franchise films planned around the movie franchise in the studio. Inhumans is not meant to be a rework of a planned movie, or a spin-off from the Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. , but it is organized in the same shared universe. In December, Scott Buck, the pioneer for the first season of the Marvel Netflix Iron Fist series, was revealed as an executive producing and exhibiting Inhumans . Jeph Loeb and Jim Chory are also the executives who produced this series.
IMAX serves as the financing partner in this series, the first time he did it for the television series, paying entirely for the first two episodes. IMAX initially approached Marvel about a deal after a successful IMAX event with Game of Thrones in 2015. Because of this deal, Marvel was able to spend more on Inhumans than on other shows, especially for visual effects, which have been criticized in series like Agent SHIELD ABC also hopes partnering with IMAX will attract more viewers to the series than previous Marvel shows, similar to the "buzz-creating, watching" series provided by Marvel for Netflix, and may even attract more viewers to the fifth season of TV season 2017-18 season. Ben Sherwood, president of the Disney-ABC Television Group, described the deal as "a fourfold victory - a victory for IMAX, a victory for Marvel, a victory for ABC Studio and a victory for ABC to launch the show in an innovative and attention-getting way" in a market that increasingly crowded for the original television series. Buck feels working with IMAX "gives us more freedom and encourages and encourages us to think a little more than we do if it's just a normal networking event. We just want to think bigger in terms of scope, and what we see, and how we bring this character to the audience. "Loeb warns that Inhumans is" a television show aired in IMAX theater "rather than a movie, but it will still be a spectacle, and" a unique way to see TV ".
In September 2017, Buck and the series crew generally [know] where the first three seasons can go ", with Buck noting that" there will always be a place "to take on different family members. He also said that there is a certain point of the workplace on the second season will start.Nellie Andreeva from Deadline Hollywood finally labeled the first season "underwhelming", and considers the series "dead" in March 2018. On May 11, ABC officially canceled Inhumans .
Write
Buck says Inhumans will be "family dramas with one big story that leads us throughout the season", rather than procedural serials like Agent SHIELD , and although the initial IMAX release is meant to be "something which is completely stand-alone ", he hopes it will" attract enough people to make them want to watch the rest of the show ". In combining the more fantastic elements associated with Inhumans, Buck says they will rely on "to some extent, yes, but again, we approach all of this as real people who happen to have this ability, so they are all very grounded people.... We want their power to look like a very natural part of their personality. "
The Season is set on Earth and in the inhuman city of Attilan, which is on the Moon, and tells the true story inspired by elements of the comic, including Paul Jenkins and Jae Lee 1998-99 series Inhumans . Buck said that the story arc this season "will finish at the end of the season, but also opens us to all other potential storylines". This story puts characters in situations where using their powers will not help them, to help "see the character as a person with super powers, not as a superhero only". Compared to other superhero series like the Netflix series from Marvel, Inhumans is more suitable for children, albeit with some "parental guidance". It was reported that the "supporting scripts" were a point of contention between ABC and Marvel for this series, with network executives expressing concerns about Marvel from an early age.
Casting
In late February 2017, Iwan Rheon was cast as Maximus, followed immediately by Anson Mount as Black Bolt. There was no audition for Black Bolt's role because his character did not speak, with Mount instead thrown because there was a relationship with Loeb, who felt the Mount would fit the role. In early March, the series added Serinda Swan as Medusa, Ken Leung as Karnak, Eme Ikwuakor as Gorgon, Isabelle Cornish as Crystal, and Ellen Woglom as Louise. During the time of his audition to become a player, Swan has also been instrumental in the HBO Ballers series, which requires negotiations between the two series to ensure Swan will be allowed to perform in both.
Mike Moh and Sonya Balmores were also cast in March 2017 as Triton and Auran, respectively. Also in that month, comic writer Charles Soule indicated that this series will feature some NuHumans as well, including some that he created in his book Inhuman . In June 2017, Henry Ian Cusick revealed he will portray Evan Declan in this series.
Design
Carlos Barbosa served as a production designer for the series, with Adam Davis as art director. Both are architects who previously worked together on several big screen movies. Buck notes that there are many different looks and designs for the Inhumans since their creation, allowing the crew to "choose what is the best and most interesting aspect" for adaptation. Davis describes comics as a storyboard that gives "a very wide blow" from which they develop their own "visual language". The series contrasts with the "concrete and dark" look of Attilan with more colorful scenes on Earth. The set of this series is designed and built more vertically than usual to accommodate IMAX releases, and to make use of available space. The set for Attilan is mainly made of stone, due to the limited construction materials that will be available on the moon. Davis says that this instinctively leads them to a combination of expressionism and brutal architecture when designing the city, which also reflects some of Honolulu's architecture where the Earth scene is set. The designers also took inspiration from early Russian architecture and style from the 1960s such as "pure pure geometric shape". This is shown in rooms such as the Royal Hall, which is based on a rectangular shape; The Quiet Room, which is a circle; and Control Room, based on equilateral triangles. The device also includes many reflective surfaces, which the crew is expected to "deliver more depth to the image" of the IMAX camera.
Attilan is surrounded by a cone-shaped energy field, which projects the moon's surface to disguise the city, and projects in Earth-like images such as clouds and sunsets. The cone shape is chosen, rather than the more traditional dome shape, so the Quiet Room where Black Bolt spends much of its time can be directly under the top of the field, and "if it accidentally produces sonic waves, the wave is diverted to the conical side and exits the peak outward space "and away from the city. Decorative sets are described as "a bit futuristic but old-fashioned", with elements like ancient Inhumans ancestor statues coming from the Royal Hall. The apartments and bedrooms are very rare, "only with the essentials". Black Bolt and Medusa's bedrooms have views of the entire city. Crystal's bedroom was designed to load Lockjaw, a dog weighing 2,000 pounds (910 kg); because he can teleport, the set door frame does not have to be the size of the character, but the area like where he sleeps in his room. Roland Sanchez served as a costume designer for this series. Rheon calls the costumes "very different" from how they appear in comics. For example, Mount does not wear black Bolt comic costume from black clothes with white accents, tuning forks, and masks. Mount said that this was done to make the characters "more accessible to viewers... I'm not sure TV is a space for masks." Rheon added that the costume was meant to look strange to the audience to highlight that the Inhumans have been separated from Earth and human culture for some time. Special make-up effects are provided by Glenn Hetrick and Neville Page's Alchemy Studios.
Filming
The shoot for Inhumans began on March 5, 2017, in Downtown Honolulu, under the title Project Project, with Jeff Jur playing the cinematographer. The studio work for the series takes place in Kalaeloa, Hawaii at the former Naval Air Station Barbers Point airfield. Additional shooting took place at Diamond Head, and the Hawaii State Capitol building. The first two episodes of the series were taken on the ArriXive 65 IMAX 2D digital camera, to accommodate debut on the IMAX screen, with the main action sequence of the next episode also taken using technology to improve the overall visual quality of the series. The new, wider lens is made specifically for the camera used in this series. The first two episodes were taken for 20 days, with the remaining episodes having an eight-day filming schedule. The shoot ended on 12 June. It is reported that this series has undergone many changes.
ABC, Marvel and IMAX chose to produce Inhumans in Hawaii because of the state tax incentives for filmmaking, and the strong relationships Disney and ABC have with countries from previous projects. However, with the only production studio on the islands, Hawaii Film Studio, used by Hawaii Five-O , a new studio space needs to be developed for the project. The Hawaii State Film Office has been interested in developing the former Naval Air Station Barbers Point airfield into a movie-making studio, and by early 2017, the space has been hired by the Hawaii Navy to Hawaii's Department of Business, Economic and Tourism Development, a leased complex for series production, enabling production to start retrofit of former airfields into production facilities. Jean Higgins, who previously worked in Hawaii on ABC Lost as a co-executive producer, served as a producer of Inhumans . Inhumans employs about 150 local workers as production crews, and is expected to provide $ 80-100 million annually for the Hawaiian economy.
Visual effects
Mark Kolpack, the visual effects watcher at Agent SHIELD , stated that he will not be involved with Inhumans because of his commitment to SHIELD , despite introducing the species in the series. Eric Grenaudier serves as a visual effects watchdog for the series instead, with seven studio visual effects working on the series. Many effects are made by Digital Media. Buck notes that Medusa's hair is a very difficult process and "takes a long time in the post to make that effect work," while Grenaudier adds that creating Lockjaw and the city of Attilan are also some of the biggest challenges in this series. He noted that the team is trying to create an effect that will survive on IMAX screens and is equivalent to those seen in MCU movies, but with budget and television schedules. Initial visual effects results reported to be a point of contention between ABC and Marvel, and after they were not well received in the first trailer of the series, earning an additional $ 100,000 spent on Medusa's hair.
Lockjaw was created by Double Negative, whose director Roel Reinà © à © called "the best house to do creatures". A large, "stuffy" blue foam is used on set as a stand-in for Lockjaw to help frame images of directors and actors interacting with characters, while 360-degree cameras are used to take lighting references in every scene. to help illuminate the CG version. Double Negative started working on Lockjaw in early February 2017, began designing the final look of the characters and created a rough and simple version that could be added to the finished sequence for further reference. Marvel gave approval to the final design for Lockjaw in April 2017, during the filming of the fifth episode of the series, with Double Negative creating a complete digital model with "animation, muscle and texture". Grenaudier said that Lockjaw "should be a real photo and interact in many scenes with the environment, with others who will be able to play or touch and react with him - obviously it's already done in the movie." I'm not talking about Life of Pi < but to try to do that on an episodic schedule on the TV budget, it puts the bar high enough. "For Lockjaw's teleportation effect, ReinÃÆ'à © wants" something really organic ", and sketches for an idea of ââhow Lockjaw will organically dissolve in a sandstorm ", which Buck and Marvel love. It was reported that the high cost of producing Lockjaw resulted in characters being removed from the series as it progressed. Music
In 2017 San Diego Comic-Con, Loeb announced Sean Callery as a composer for Inhumans , having previously compiled a score for Marvel's Jessica Jones . Callery recorded his score for Inhumans with a 68-piece orchestra, the largest he ever handled for television. He called his score "the most thematic I have with the show I'm working on. In essence, it's about the royal family, so there are some great themes for the kingdom and family." Callery wrote the main theme "adventurer" for the series featured in the IMAX release, with a "very short version" used in television episodes. Callery tries to use musical events to distinguish between scenes set on Earth and those on the Moon, and takes four or five days to compose music for each episode.
Universalization Marvel Cinematic Universe
When announcing the series, Sherwood said that the people behind the project have "worked very carefully" with Marvel Studios to ensure that "content-we only improve" MCU. Buck notes that "things that have happened to the [Agent of] SHIELD will potentially affect our event as well", but warned that he's focused on getting the new series "launched" before trying to crossover with other parts of MCU. Buck explains further, "It's all in the same universe, and even if we do not come across with, say, Agent SHIELD or characters from other events, they're still out there. We all live in the world The same thing that is applied to other events and also applies to Inhumans as well. "Elements brought from Agent SHIELD include alien writings related to Inhumans on the series , and Terrigen's blue crystals, designed to be consistent with their depictions at LoI Agents i> Loeb notes that Hawaii is selected as a series setting, in part because Marvel wants Inhumans to occur in the "area which is contained "as" a way to minimize its impact on the rest of the MCU ". He added that, at the time of the premiere of the series, there was no plan for the characters to interact with the Inhumans on Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D like Daisy Johnson. The last episode of this series sees the destruction of Attilan and his people becoming refugees on Earth, similar to
Release
Theater and broadcast
Inhumans premiere their first two episodes (total 75 minutes) in Los Angeles at Universal CityWalk on August 28, 2017, before debuting on 667 IMAX screens in 67 countries on September 1, 2017. It ran for two weeks, as with all IMAX releases, each theater "sets the time of week," so Inhumans does not stay on the IMAX screen in some theaters for two weeks. The premiere episode in IMAX theaters in Italy and Germany on September 15, and in Korea on September 22, was finally played on more than 1,000 IMAX screens in over 74 countries. ABC then broadcast the weekly series, starting with the first two episodes on September 29, 2017, with the first two episodes featuring an additional 9 minutes of exclusive content beyond the filtered version of IMAX. The first season consists of eight episodes. CTV acquired broadcasting rights for Canada, while Sky acquired them for Great Britain.
Richard L. Gelfond, IMAX chief executive, said IMAX "believes our exhibition partners will be happy about this." The response from conceptual conversations is very positive. Sherwood adds that Disney ensures ABC affiliates are on board with IMAX debut for this series, and that they have worked with Marvel Studios so the drama series debut can be set to not interfere with the launch of the MCU movie - the drama series is between the Spider-Man : Homecoming and Thor: Ragnarok .
Marketing
ABC, IMAX and Marvel Television strive to create joint marketing and promotional plans for this series across their exclusive media platforms, which will be the launch of the first cross-platform marketing of the television series. This approach is described by industry analysts as a "cross-platform impulse that can not be missed".
A teaser for this series was released before Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 IMAX's Playback, as well as online, in early May 2017. It follows the release of the cast photo, which Dana Schwartz at Observer.com called "pretty lousy... Overall, the whole look of the royal family is' the group that meets on Craigslist to try to win a costume contest, with varying levels of commitment. ' "James Whitbrook of Gizmodo says" some of these costumes work in a way better than others ": Black Bolt" may come out the best ", Crystal" gets some points for effort ", but Medusa looks" like he's trying to do cosplay with very low budget from the Game of Thrones ' Sansa Stark ". Analyzing the response to the series on Twitter, the Amobee marketing company counted 27,000 tweets on the series between May 4 and May 9, with 17 and 7 percent of those specifically mentioning "hair" or "wig", respectively, referring to Swan's hair in the photo. which is mainly criticized. 35 percent of the tweets are considered negative, and only 26 percent positive, with Amobee brand-principal analyst Jonathan Cohen saying, "The high level of viewer involvement in Marvel TV shows is a double-edged sword for the company, on the one hand there is great anticipation around every nugget information for the upcoming TV series. On the other hand, when the audience segment is disappointed, the reaction is magnified ".
The first footage for this series was aired exclusively at the original ABC advertiser presentation on May 17, 2017. The reactions praised the visuals for Lockjaw and put out some criticism about the costumes. The first public trailer was released on June 29, after recording leaked online from the initial phrase, and was met with a particularly negative reaction. Cast members appear at San Diego Comic-Con International 2017 to promote the series, where exclusive footage is featured. The panel was closed with an extended trailer for the series, which was also released online, and appeared before the screening of the IMAX film Dunkirk . Fans present at the panel enjoyed the recording, with Swan feeling the positive fan response to the finished effect for Medusa's hair was "justification". However, critics are not positive about the tape. In August, the first episode was released for criticism to see in front of the 'Cictics Association (TCA)' television series tour, but early reactions posted online were soon revealed. At the TCA show, Dungey and Loeb discussed critiques of the quality of the first episode. The panel was cut short by ABC, and was widely considered by the critics present to be "awkward" and "uncomfortable". Michael Cavna calls marketing for the series at this point "very badly," noting "the harder the sales force of the event tries to get rid of the initial odor, the more angry firms to some Marvel fans ", and it will require more" word-of-mouth positive "before release to entice fans to view the series on IMAX. Then in August, an exclusive clip of the series is featured at the Edinburgh International Television Festival.
Reception
box office
IMAX's presentation of the first two episodes earned $ 3.5 million worldwide. The $ 3.5 million million was regarded as a disappointment by IMAX, with Gelfond noting that poor and dirty receipts are based on "customer expectation misalignment", which expects "a production similar to mega-budget blockbuster movies, not pilots for a television show".
Ratings
In January 2018, Dungey declared the series "not performing for us at the level we wanted" and that the number of viewers "was less interesting to us than we expected." This series averaged 4.14 million total viewers, including from DVR, ranked 121th among the network series in the 2017-18 television season. It also has an average total of 18-49 rating of 1.2, which is the 80th.
Critical response
The review collecting website Rotten Tomatoes reports a 10% approval rating, with an average rating of 3.43/10 based on 41 reviews. The consensus of the website states, "Marvel's Inhumans sets new low standards for MCUs with unimaginative narratives, dull design work, weak characters, and melodrama release." Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, scored 27 out of 100 based on 20 reviews, indicating "generally unfavorable reviews". The reviews for the first two episodes released on IMAX were largely negative from criticism. In his review of the first episode, TVLine's Matt Webb Mitovich said, "If speed and ingenuity [of the second half] continues to increase, Inhumans , with just six more episodes, could prove to be serial series 'events' serviced - although it may not be enough so that the fans of SHIELD fans will forgive the pending returns from the series. "Brian Lowry of CNN noted," If eight episodes of Inhumans fail, it could be the spotlight on the fact that Marvel generally lags behind "Warner Bros. Television and DC Comics, which produces the Arrowverse series for The CW.
After releasing the final episode, Kofi Outlaw of Comicbook.com said, "Ultimately, it's hard to avoid the conclusion that Inhumans is anything but total failure - one of the worst of the ever-existing Marvel Franchise Cinematic Universe... we've never seen a case like Inhumans , where there was a big IMAX theater release that fell flat before a disappointing TV. "James Whitbrook in io9 felt" Inhumans many things, and not doing everything well. " He continued that he would be "amazed" if this series received a second season, and felt once the fifth season of the SHIELD Agents returned to the present Earth from space, "Attilan Inhumans can make for a long-term plotline That's probably what Inhumans should not be from his own messy and miserable show. "In his review for the final episode, Entertainment Weekly ' Christian Holub feels Inhumans "might be forgotten in the larger MCU, though it would be fun to check it at some point." Reviewing the season, Matt Liparota of Destructoid concluded, " Inhumans is a job that is almost of no value to anyone. This is not even an interesting train accident. It's just boring, lifeless slogans easily shoot to the top of the list of worst things produced MCU in almost a deck ade its existence. "Marc Buxton of the Den of Geek is a bit more positive, the feelings of Inhumans " end up being more fun than a horrible opening two hours will show "but" still Marvel's first swing and lose... The Inhuman guy is only in the budget bubble... [who] came and went with a whimper. "Buxton wants a second season for this series, after enjoying the players and some characters, and hopes Marvel will" lean into the right Inhumans series and not the deviant half. "
