Background and writing
"Right Here Waiting" is the second single from Repeat Offender , after "Satisfied". Marx wrote the song on the street as a love letter to his wife, actress Cynthia Rhodes, who was in South Africa filming in a movie. The song was composed by Marx with Jeffery (C.J.) Vanston to show no heavy drums and popular synthesizers at the time, with Marx's vocals only accompanied by classical guitars (by Bruce Gaitsch) and keyboards (by Vanston). This is one of Marx's most frequently discussed compositions.

"Right Here Waiting" entered the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart at number 44 on the week of July 8, 1989, and became Marx's number one single number on August 12, 1989. Certified Gold on August 21, three consecutive weeks at number one, was replaced by "Cold Hearted" by Paula Abdul on September 2, 1989. The song was the first of several of Marx's works to become number one on the Hot Adult Contemporary Chart. Platinum Certified on October 16, 1989, "Right Here Waiting" was Marx's best-selling single. It is also the most enduring, charting on the top 15 Billboard Hot Adult Contemporary Recurrents charts for four consecutive years, from 2000 to 2003, more than ten years after its release. The song also reached # 1 on Radio & amp; Note The CHR/Pop Airplay chart on August 4, 1989 stayed above the chart for three weeks and remained on the chart for thirteen weeks.
