Stephen James Merchant (born November 24, 1974) is a British writer, director, radio presenter, comedian and actor.
Merchant is best known for his collaboration with Ricky Gervais and Karl Pilkington, co-writer and co-director of the popular British sitcom The Office (2001-2003), co-writer and fellow star from Extra (2005-2007) and co-host The Ricky Gervais Show in radio, podcast, audiobook and television formats; the radio version won the Sony Bronze Award. He is also known for his voice role as Wheatley in the 2011 video game Portal 2 .
Merchant appeared as himself in the BBC series Life's Too Short (2011-2013), which he wrote together and directed together. He also voiced ConRad's computer program at The Simpsons in the 2016 episode of "The Girl Code", jointly developing the Sky1 An Idiot Abroad (2010-2011) stand-up comedian. He starred in his first drama, Richard Bean's The Mentalists, at Wyndham's Theater, London from July to August 2015. His efforts have earned him three BAFTA awards, four British Comedy Awards and Emmy Primetime Awards.
The Merchant had his first dramatic role in a film when he was cast as Caliban in the superhero movie Logan (2017).

Careers
Pre-2001
Traders started his career doing stand-up comedy at Bristol's Comedy Box, where, he recalled, "The first week I did very well, the second week I died in my ass, I realized that standing is not that easy." "He also appeared as a contestant in the 1997 episode of the Blockbusters TV show and worked for a short time as DJ for Radio Caroline.
Merchants met Ricky Gervais for the first time in 1997, when Gervais (then in "Head of Speech" on London's London XFM radio station) hired Merchant as his assistant. (Gervais said later that he had called the Merchant for an interview only because it was the first CV submitted to him.) Merchants and Gervais held a Saturday afternoon radio show together from January to August 1998, when both left XFM as it was bought by Capital Radio Group. In the same year, Merchant was a finalist at the Daily Telegraph Open Mic Awards.
Merchants worked for seven years in XFM 104.9. The Saturday show never had a large audience; Gervais said "This is a tin can radio station... Even the biggest radio station in that building." He created the features of 'Hip Hop Hooray', 'Make Ricky Gervais Laugh' and 'Song for the Ladies'. After leaving XFM, Merchant started a production course at the BBC. As part of his duties, he asked Gervais to appear in a 30 minute short film, "Seedy Boss," which became the earliest inspiration for their sitcom The Office . They collaborated on a sitcom pilot called Golden Year featuring a manager who suffered from a midlife crisis; the pilot aired on the Comedy Lab Channel 4 series in September 1998, but failed to find any further success.
2001-2003 ( Office and back to XFM)
In mid 2001, BBC Two aired the first series of The Office, co-written and co-directed by Merchant and Gervais and starred in the latter as manager of David Brent's paper sales office; the show initially got low ratings. Beginning in September 2001, Merchants and Gervais returned to XFM as the co-host of The Ricky Gervais Show, another Saturday afternoon program, leading to their fruitful relationship with producer Karl Pilkington.
They took a break from a radio show in mid-2002 to film the second series of The Office , which aired that year; In addition to writing and directing the show, Merchant made a cameo appearance in the episode "Charity" as a friend of Gareth Keenan character known as Oggy or Oggmonster. (Merchant's father also appeared in several episodes as an office builder named Gordon.) Merchants also directed a sitcom pilot named The Last Chancers , which aired in Comedy Lab in November 2002 and became a broadcast five-part series in December on E4.
Merchants and Gervais continued to host The Ricky Gervais Show until 2003, taking another chance to film the Office special Christmas, which aired in December. Radio shows went unlimited air in January 2004. During 2004, Merchant appeared in a recurring role as a chef in Gelarth Marenghi's Darkplace and in a cameo at Green Wing, as a script association in Chris Morris and Charlie Brooker's sitcom Nathan Barley . In the same year, Office aired in the US for critical acclaim. It then won the Golden Globe Award for Best Television Series - Musical or Comedy received by Merchants and Gervais. This was followed in 2005 by the 4th series of radio shows, consisting of six episodes.
AS. series of Office
In March 2005, the American version of The Office was aired, with Merchant and Gervais credited as executive producer. They will then write together the third season episode "The Convict", and Merchant will proceed to direct the fifth episode of "Customer Survey".
Podcast series
In December 2005, with sponsorship by The Guardian, Merchant, Gervais and Pilkington began recording weekly podcasts (also called The Ricky Gervais Show ). Throughout the first series (until February 20, 2006), podcasts are consistently ranked the most popular in the world, and are certified as the most downloaded of all time by Guinness World Records. Two more series and three special installments ("Podfather Trilogy") were recorded in 2006, with the last episode released on Christmas Eve. In late 2008, they recorded four more podcasts and started a series of audiobooks that examined Pilkington's perspective on various subjects.
Extras
In July 2005, after the return of the XFM radio show (fill in for Adam and Joe), Gervais and the new Merchant Extra sitcom were aired on BBC2. The Merchant feature series in a supporting role as Darren Lamb, an incompetent agent for the struggling actor Andy Millman, played by Gervais. Series 2 of Extras aired in late 2006, followed by a special Christmas in December 2007; all three installments are aired on HBO in the United States. Merchant won the 2006 British Comedy Award for Best TV Actor for his performance as Lamb.
The Steve Show
In January 2007, Merchant began hosting its own radio show on BBC 6 Music, airing weekly on Sunday afternoons. Instead of comedy, The Steve Show focuses on music and especially "new music", which Merchants define as "music you've never heard before." Many of the songs on the show are suggested by listeners or co-presenters. The show also featured several of his friends, including his roommate, his childhood friend, as well as actor Rufus Gerrard-Wright (who also appeared in the episode Extra ). The spring search for "dia-J" resulted in the addition of former Byker Grove actor Sammy T. Dobson joining the ensemble. "The Steve Show" aired for four seasons and ended in May 2009.
Stand-up
Merchant began performing stand-up comedy in the late 1990s for critical success, although he decided to focus more on his work by writing partner Ricky Gervais after the success of The Office. Merchants returned to stand-up with a nationwide tour of the United Kingdom in September 2011, under the title Hello Ladies . The tour, which ended in New York, was later released on DVD. By the end of 2012, the tour continues in Australia and New Zealand. Merchant toured first in Scandinavia in October 2014, performing in 11 different cities as part of the European festival circuit.
Halo Ladies
The Hello Ladies Merchant sitcom airs on September 29, 2013 at HBO, where he plays Stuart Pritchard, a website designer in Los Angeles who is failing to pursue beautiful women. It was adapted from its stand-up show of the same name. Frequent Merchant partners, Ricky Gervais, are not involved in any part of the event written by Merchants, Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky. After running eight initial episodes, HBO did not update the event for the second season but aired a special movie on November 22, 2014 which was presented as the final episode of the series.
Other jobs
Merchants have played small roles in the movie Hot Fuzz (2007), Running Fatboy Run (2007), and The Invention of Lying (2009). She has a supporting role in the 2010 film Tooth Fairy. On television, Merchant made a cameo appearance in a non-speaking role at the premiere of the 6th season 24 ; he also starred as a sports commentator on an unpaired pilot No Skillz . In 2009, Merchant and Gervais collaborated on the film Cemetery Junction, established in the UK working-class in the 1970s, which received mixed and positive reviews on its release in 2010.
Then in 2010, Gervais and Merchant wrote, and had a cameo role in, Life's Too Short, a television show starring Warwick Davis. For television, Merchant and Gervais also produce An Idiot Abroad . In 2011, he lent his voice to CGI Gnomeo and Juliet and played a role in the Farrelly brothers' comedy Hall Pass . In 2013 he starred in I Give It a Year as the best man.
On October 18, 2013, she hosts the episodes of the I Have Got News for You panel show and is featured in Short Poppies . In 2014 she appeared in the episode of Modern Family ' s "Las Vegas".

Merchant is the voice of the video game Wheatley in Valve in 2011 Portal 2 , a role that earned him widespread acclaim among reviewers. He has stated that the project is "exhausting," he is also "very pleased with the response that people are giving him." What makes me so happy is how people seem to respond to it the way they do it with movies they have, or TV shows they enjoy. "In 2013, he changed this role as an Ap-Sap voice on Team Fortress 2, a weapon based on the Wheatley core.
Merchants have been providing voice-over since 2009 for Barclays and Waterstones ads. In 2014, he starred in two ads for Newcastle Brown Ale and for the Cadillac 2015 ATS Coupe.
He is the executive producer for the Spike Lip Sync Battle and in July 2015 Merchant opened his first drama The Mentalists by Richard Bean with Steffan Rhodri at West End London. He appeared in three episodes of The Big Bang Theory as Dave Gibbs, a man named Amy after he broke up with Sheldon.
He has portrayed George Washington and Abraham Lincoln on the Comedy Central serial Dramatic History . Through the first four seasons of the show, Merchant was the only actor who played the same historical figure (Lincoln) twice.
She hosted a Celebrity special edition of the British cult game show The Crystal Maze, on Channel 4 on October 16, 2016 - all in Stand Up to Cancer campaign aids, in partnership with Cancer Research. UK.
In 2017, Merchants play Caliban in the sequel The Wolverine Logan . Merchants, along with John Krasinski and Allyson Seeger, are executive producers of Dream Corp, LLC, an upcoming animated series created by Daniel Stessen at Adult Swim. The series was announced as a pilot in May 2014, and the full season is approved in November 2015. Jon Gries of Lost fame will portray the main character.
Personal life
Traders live in Nichols Canyon, California, in a house formerly owned by Ellen DeGeneres. He has a second home in London. He has used his unsuccessful experience in dating for his comedic acts.
The merchant stands 6a, ft 7Ã, in (2.01Ã, m) high, and Gervais once likens his dance moves to "electrically uptight lizards" while also describing him as a "stick stick with a glass" or a glass of The Muppet Show . Karl Pilkington describes Merchant dance as "a bit of a weird art" in the past, but has since "got used to it," while Russell Brand likens it to "graceful locusts." Merchant commented that he preferred to equate himself with fellow tall men and English footballer Peter Crouch, who also had a 6ft 7 inches (201cm tall); he imitated Crouch in a BBC sketch broadcast as part of a pre-match preparation for England's opening game at the 2006 World Cup.
Before the 2010 Election, the Merchant was one of 48 celebrities who signed a warning letter against Conservative Party policy against the BBC.
