Format
The first two seasons of the show follow a similar format from the BBC version: three main hosts are present, The Stig (covert racer) tests the vehicle, and celebrities are invited to interview and drive around the test track. In addition, similar challenges in nature with those presented in the original show are replicated in Top Gear. "Stars in Cars at Affordable Prices" (segment "Big Star, Small Car") using the Suzuki SX4 Sportback. The filming of this segment, along with the in-studio segment took place at former Marine Corps Air Station El Toro, now known as Orange County Great Park, in Irvine, California.
Beginning in season 3, the event changed its emphasis on stunt host actions involving car customization, with all studio-based segments, as well as car reviews and Power Laps, removed from the series.

Power Laps
During the first two seasons, Power Laps is a segment of the program in which The Stig completed laps in tracks in a reviewed car to compare his performance with his previous competitors.

History
Top Gear of Discovery Channel
In 2005, Discovery Channel made a pilot for an American version of a show featuring IHRA Bruno Massel actors and riders as one of the hosts, but not taken by the network. Soon, the Discovery Channel began airing a slightly Americanized version of American Gear with presenters Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May. The show features feature clips and challenges from Series 1-5 from the BBC Two show with segment recognition recorded by Clarkson, Hammond and May at Dunsfold Aerodrome studio specially for US audiences. Regular features like "The News" and "Star in a Reasonably Priced Car" are not featured on the Discovery Channel version.
Top Gear on NBC
In April 2007, the BBC is still looking to export the American version of Top Gear to the United States. NBC announced, in January 2008, that they had booked a pilot for the American version of the show, titled Gear . BBC Worldwide has been contracted to produce the pilot for NBC. According to the NBC chairman of the reality of Craig Plestis, many cars have shown an interest in the American version of Top Gear .
On June 16, 2008, NBC and the BBC officially announced the American version of Top Gear for guidance by Adam Carolla, Tanner Foust and Eric Stromer. The studio segment for the pilot was recorded on July 26, 2008 for generally favorable reviews quoting closely following the English version format. NBC is expected to have Top Gear premier instead of midseason in 2009.
Jay Leno, who initially refused to offer to host the event, expressed concern in 2008 about whether or not events like Top Gear could be successful in America. In a column published by The Sunday Times in 2008, Leno expressed concern that the American version may lack a critical review whose English version is known. The British show was produced for the BBC with public funds while American shows aired on commercial television. Leno believes that the event may have to be concerned about offending current and potential sponsors by giving their poor product reviews, leading to a compromise in journalistic integrity and freedom from its original show.
On December 11, 2008, NBC reversed its decision to place the show in lieu of midseason, citing concerns about the potential success of a car themed show considering the failure of Knight Rider. NBC allows the BBC to shop around the cable network to pick it up. In February 2009, Jeremy Clarkson stated that the American version has been "canned", claiming that focus groups "... just do not understand a single word we're talking about, they just do not really understand."
Top Gear in History
On August 6, 2010, the first Top Gear trailer was published on the web, giving fans a preview of what to expect in future episodes to broadcast on the History Channel. In this trailer, new hosts Adam Ferrara, Tanner Foust, and Rutledge Wood are seen participating in the Moonshine Challenge and Tanner Foust also took the Dodge Viper for a test drive. The first season premiered on 21 November 2010, and in 2014, the series has been updated for the fifth season. Commenting on the renewal of the second season, British host Jeremy Clarkson noted, "Top Gear is our baby so you can understand why Hammond, May and I would really like to pass it on to the presenter of the US event. We need not worry because Top Gear is definitely in safe hands , even if they insist on talking with that stupid accent.Watching episodes of series 1 with Richard and James, we find ourselves in a really heated debate about which car presenters are the best, only three ordinary people who watch the car show and love it , that's what it should be Top Gear.Bring series 2. "
In a Facebook post on June 26, 2016, Wood expressed his belief that an episode broadcasted in the same week would be the last for the History series.
Broadcast

On May 11, 2012, History updated Top Gear for the third season of 16 episodes, which aired on August 14, 2012. The second half of the season aired on January 29, 2013. It was updated for the fourth season, which started filming on April 30, 2013, and airing on September 3, 2013. The fifth season aired on June 3, 2014.
In England, the first and second seasons are broadcast on BBC Three. The first season premiered on October 14, 2011, and the second season aired on January 13, 2012. The second season stops broadcasting on January 27, but resumes operations on June 29, 2012. The song is broadcast under the name Top Gear USA to avoid confusion with the original English version.
First season premiered at GO! in Australia on November 26, 2011 while the second season aired on BBC Knowledge, channel on PayTV service Australia, Foxtel. In Canada, it airs on BBC Canada.
In Mexico and Latinamerica broadcast an event on History Channel Latino.
Reception
Before the event starts, there are mixed responses for Top Gear being remade for US audiences. Stuart's Legacy from The Guardian recorded a brutal response to the first trail of the Channel History version of the show on the Internet, with YouTube users who recorded the History version as "the true Top Gear insult" among other less-than-profitable comments. Agree with the commentators, Heritage noted that US television did not have "Jeremy Clarkson, Captain Slow and The Hamster," but noted the original BBC version is not exactly "English" per se, and found the show might be able to translate easily if done correctly.
Top Gear premiered on 1.9 million viewers in its first episode, which dropped to 1.3 million viewers after the first episode. Second season premier viewers have 2 million viewers viewers. Metacritic aggregates 72 for season one.
The event has received mixed reviews from many critics. Tim Goodman of The Hollywood Reporter rated the event as a whole, noting, "This is a promising start for an event that most of its thinking will end up in a ditch." Goodman recorded a faltering history of events brought to the United States (including Jay Leno's Star shoot in the Affordable Car segment for his short show) and online comment poison, which Goodman replied: "Everyone gets me." Mike Hale of the New York Times has a mixed reaction to the show, going from how the History version is almost unanimous following the formula used by the BBC version ("that any subject or concept can attract a large audience if You find the right balance of competition and destruction (a smash that looks like a child of big objects) with humor, beautiful sentiment and location. ") For how the event has a gap between the BBC and History Channel versions. Hale had worries that the show was not translated well, because the History version lacked the "out of line" aspect of the original, and the host ranks for a younger and more superficial version of History than the BBC host.
John Krewson of Gawker Media, writing for Jalopnik, encourages readers to watch the show. Watching the first three episodes of the first season, he noted the first episode would be "a bit weird for most viewers." but toward the third episode, viewers must "have a full snack tray and one free hour," and praise the show despite its initial rudeness. Chris Shunk, writing for Autoblog, was impressed with the first show, but warned readers not to compare Top Gear's version of History to the BBC Top Gear version easily. Also, the event will encourage Autoblog to "keep watching... at least for nine weeks." Lee Pray of Edmunds Inside Line noted the show seemed useful, but in the meantime it would not fit the original version of the BBC, it was feasible to have two Top Gear versions around. The A.V. The club gave the overall rating show C, lamenting that Season One from the series ended with a clip show, and did not like the host of Adam Ferrara. The review compares the BBC and History Channel versions, and claims that the History version borrowed "graphics, music and editing...." from the original, but that the show feels like "imported from a 1980s beer commercial."
