Histori
Sejarah awal
Caterer brothers grew up in rock 'n' rolls and crooners like Tony Bennett and Frank Sinatra. In 1980 Matt got a guitar, Josh bass and Eli drum and they started playing together. Immediately afterwards, their eyes open to Ramones and punk rock. Other early musical influences include Mel TormÃÆ'à ©, Tom Waits, The Replacements, The Smiths, early AC/DC, The Cars, Dinosaur Jr., Hall & amp; Oates, Liberace, and many others.
In 1990, Matt, Josh, and Eli (later known as Speedstick ) got a show at a party and played about 10 original punk style compositions based on their favorite bands. Around this time, Matt switched to bass and Dave Martens joined as a drummer. Josh became a fan of Elvis Costello and his style, therefore, became more influenced by pop. Speedstick recorded 11 songs in their first studio session, including "Brand New Hairstyle", which will be a staple of the Smoking Popes repertoire.
They changed the name of the band, picked up "Smoking" from Matt and Josh's favorite for excessive smoking, and "Whales" from The Pope of Greenwich Village. Martens, disappointed with the band's music direction, stopped attending band training and Caterers recruited Mike Felumlee from Article One to replace him.
In 1991, the band released five songs recorded during their Speedstick days as EP's Inoculator with local indie label Radius Records. With the results and what other funds they could scratch together, the Smoking Whales funded the Break Up EP recording in 1992. In February Eli Caterer joined as a second guitarist and in October "Break Up" was released. They play as often as possible in the Chicago area and often go to small places in Indiana.
In 1993 the band recorded their compositions on 2 EPs. They also recorded a 7 "split single with Groovy Love Vibes GLV vocalist Erik Pertl guest starred in the song" Leather and Lace "Popes and Josh guested on the GLV track" Goodtime Music ".
The band got a break when pop punk icon Ben Weasel from Screeching Weasel became a fan and used his connection to recruit Mass Giorgini from Squirtgun to record the first LP The Smoking Popes, Get Fired .
That year also saw the release of one Pope's song from the same session. "Let's Hear It for Love" appears in the compilation "It's a Punk Thing... You Would not Understand" on Shakefork Records.
For follow-up from Get Fired, the band worked with producer Phil Bonnet, who also produced a lot of their initial material. "Need you Around", which will then launch Popes Smoking to a large audience via the soundtrack for the Clueless movie, recorded in December.
Login with Capitol
In early 1994, the band opened for Green Day, which extended the invitation after hearing Get Fired . In mid-1994, the popes finished their new album, Born to Quit . After "Need You Around" started broadcasting on alternative radio, they got the attention of the record label guides. They signed a contract with Capitol Records, which was re-released Born to Quit. In a promotional event, they toured America with Gummy Dolls and Tripping Daisy.
In 1996, the Clueless soundtrack was released in Finland and "Need You Around" was dropped as a single to capitalize on their new popularity there. It was soon appointed "Single of the Week" by New Musical Express. They toured England and Scotland for a few weeks, then crossed back to the top of the Pond for a tour with Jawbreaker.
Despite the tour, the album sales did not meet the expectations of the Capitol and it became clear that the band had to deliver a hit. Producer Jerry Finn, who has added gloss to the sounds of Green Day and Rancid, was brought in to do the same for the Smoking Whales. In September they toured with label-friends The Figgs and Jimmy Eat World.
Early in 1997 brought disgruntled label executives insisting that they did not hear any of the songs published by Smoking Popes for the new album. The band spent six days writing and demonstrating the song until finally Capitol decided that the new song "I Know You Love Me" has potential. However, the label fired representatives of Pope A & amp; R and the new album were suspended.
After the negotiation, Goal Failure was released in August. At this point Tom Counihan, a.k.a. Tom Daily, joined the band as a tour guitarist. In October they started touring alongside Morrissey, who said about their early album Born To Quit, "[it] is amazing, the most fun thing I've ever heard in years."
The band funded his own video for "I Know You Love Me", which was filmed as a single camera shot, in the exercise room on the Metro using Creative Theater's creative talent.
In 1998 the band toured with Triple Fast Action and Menthol. Afterwards, the band decided to record a cover album titled The Party's Over , which would fulfill their contract with the Capitol.
Split Duvall
Around that time, Josh became deeply involved in Christianity and wanted to dedicate his work to his faith. Label rejected the new album but released Smoking Popes from their contract. The band played several major shows before Josh quit, effectively breaking the band.
In a subsequent interview, Josh commented this time "I became a Christian in May 1998 and I quit the Pope in January 1999. I try to put my faith into what we do in the Pope, but it does not look like it fits."
A side project of Josh Duvall was formed in August 2001, including members of Cigarette Popok, who had disbanded in 1998. The founding members were Josh Caterer, Tom McDougal, and Mike Felumlee. The band released one full-length album, Volume & amp; Density in 2003.
Reunion
In November 2005, Pope Smoking reunited for a packed and anticipated event at Chicago's The Metro club with Rob Kellenberger of Colossal replacing Mike Felumlee on drums. Tickets sold out in just 36 minutes.
Due to Josh's conversion to Christianity and past stance on certain "non-Christian" themes in selected pre-1999 selected songs, many fans wonder what kind of setlist will be played on the Popes reunion show. In Q and A on the band's website, Josh responded to a question like saying, "No. There are only a few songs we would not consider playing, and that's a song we do not usually play so nobody will miss them. has been practicing through most of the old Pope's catalogs, trying to pick the strongest songs, and we do not yet know what the last song choice is, but I do not think people will be disappointed. All the real favorites should be there. "In the show - recorded in a DVD called On Metro , bundled with a show CD - Josh, Matt, and Eli are excited and excited. Eli said that he was not having much fun in seven years.
In March 2006, Bayside released an acoustic album with cover of "Megan" featuring Josh Caterer on the second stanza of the song.
They embarked on a US tour in early 2006 with Bayside. During that time, the Pope acquired a new drummer, Ryan Chavez, who replaced Kellenburger, who could not commit to a full-time new tour schedule. During this tour, Josh introduced and played some new songs, including "If You Do not Care", "Stay Down" and "Welcome to Janesville", which he announced will be on the upcoming Smoking Popes album. The new album, the first original material since the "Destination Failure" of 1997, was originally scheduled for release in September 2007, but was suspended while the band decided on the label. On March 2, 2008, the new album title, Stay Down, was revealed when the band played it entirely at Schuba's Tavern in Chicago. The album was released on the independent label Curb Appeal Records.
In April 2008, Pope Smoking announced that Neil Hennessy of The Lawrence Arms would be playing drums for the band.
According to the Asian Man Records website, past issues of Pope Smoking will be re-released in 2009. In Autumn, the first seven releases, Inoculator, BreakUp, and 2, are republished with additional material. reissue "Get Fired", remastered with new artwork, released on CD and Vinyl. The band also has to work on the new album, with fans having the ability to keep up on Twitter's Josh page. It's just a Test released on Asian Man Records.
