There have been 82 recorded Shark busts in South Australia since the establishment of the colony in 1836. 20 of them have involved one death. Victims engage in a variety of aquatic activities, including surfing, diving, spear fishing, snorkeling, boating, and swimming. Six of the casualties occurred off the larger Adelaide metropolitan coast, with the remainder scattered along the vast coastline of South Australia. Many of the fatal attacks have been associated with large white sharks

2000-2014
Seven deadly shark attacks have occurred in the waters of South Australia since 2000. All attacks before 2014 have been linked to large white sharks. On February 8, 2014, the 28-year-old Sam Kellett was killed when a 100m fishing spear was off Locksmith beach near Edithburgh on the Yorke Peninsula. The spear gun and the scales recovered but his body did not. He had planned to compete in a spear fishing competition there the next day. Berleying to attract fish allowed for the competition. The competition registration form warns "Divers please be aware that burleying can encourage shark activity, so it should be used with caution." The proposed competition was canceled after the attack.
