There have been 82 recorded Shark busts in South Australia since the establishment of the colony in 1836. 20 of them have involved one death. Victims engage in a variety of aquatic activities, including surfing, diving, spear fishing, snorkeling, boating, and swimming. Six of the casualties occurred off the larger Adelaide metropolitan coast, with the remainder scattered along the vast coastline of South Australia. Many of the fatal attacks have been associated with large white sharks

2000-2014

Seven deadly shark attacks have occurred in the waters of South Australia since 2000. All attacks before 2014 have been linked to large white sharks. On February 8, 2014, the 28-year-old Sam Kellett was killed when a 100m fishing spear was off Locksmith beach near Edithburgh on the Yorke Peninsula. The spear gun and the scales recovered but his body did not. He had planned to compete in a spear fishing competition there the next day. Berleying to attract fish allowed for the competition. The competition registration form warns "Divers please be aware that burleying can encourage shark activity, so it should be used with caution." The proposed competition was canceled after the attack.

  • On February 17, 2011, Peter Clarkson was killed while diving for the abalone on the Island of Hollow, near Coffin Bay. He was attacked by two sharks. The incident was observed by the captain of the ship where he worked. Clarkson had another close encounter with a great white shark the previous August.
  • On August 24, 2005, a three-year-old marine biologist Jarrod Stehbens was killed while diving on the reef of Glenelg. He collected cuttlefish eggs for research. The shark is about 5 meters long. Jarrod's father said that Jarrod would not want the sharks involved in the attack to be killed.
  • On December 16, 2004, Nick Peterson, 18, was killed on the West Coast. He has played with friends who are pulling surfboards behind a small boat. He was taken while in the water, waiting for his next 300m offshore trip. His friends ask the shark to be destroyed, but Nick's dad declares "We do not advocate careless killing of sharks They should be admired and respected and respected, and Nick knows that."
  • On April 30, 2002, the 23-year-old Paul Buckland was killed at Smoky Bay on the west coast of the Eyre Peninsula. He has been diving for scallops.
  • On September 25, 2000, 17-year old Jevan Wright was killed while surfing at Blackfellows Point near Elliston on the Eyre Peninsula. During an examination in February 2001, Coroner stated "All experienced surfers, especially those who surf on the West Coast of South Australia, should be aware of the risk, however remote, the shark attacks." The coroner's report also notes that "Mr. Geoff Wright, Jevan's father, also made some very reasonable observations about the frequency of shark attacks and the ways in which this phenomenon can be minimized." His observations are related to tuna farming in Boston Bay and salmon fishing.
  • On September 24, 2000, New Zealander, 25 year old Cameron Bayes, was taken while surfing on Cactus Beach in south Penong on the Great Australian Bight.

    1992-1999

    • On May 29, 1999, 22-year-old Tony Donoghue was attacked and murdered, believed by a great white shark while wind surfing in Hardwicke Bay.
    • On June 28, 1998 Douglas Chesher was attacked fatally on the Neptune Islands while diving for abalone.

    1985-1991

    Four deadly shark attacks have occurred in the waters of South Australia between these years. The four attacks were attributed to large white sharks.

    • On September 8, 1991, 19-year-old Jonathon Lee was attacked and killed during a scuba diving at Snapper Point, Aldinga Beach.
    • On March 9, 1989 Matthew Foale, 27, was attacked and killed while surfing in Waitpinga Beach, Waitpinga.
    • On September 18, 1987 Terrance Gibson, 47, was attacked and killed while scuba diving off Marino Rocks.
    • On March 3, 1985, 33-year-old Shirley Anne Durdin was attacked and killed while snorkeling at Wiseman Beach in Peake Bay near Port Lincoln.

    1976-1984

    No fatal shark attacks were recorded during this period.

    1971-1975

    Four deadly shark attacks have occurred in the waters of South Australia between these years. The two attacks were attributed to a large white shark with two remaining species unknown. On February 10, 1975, Wade Shippard, 12, was attacked by a great white shark while swimming at Point Sinclair near Penong at 6 pm.

  • On January 20, 1975, David Barrowman, 17, was taken by sharks while surfing in Coffin Bay. His body has not recovered.
  • On January 9, 1974 Terry Manuel, 26, was attacked by a great white shark while diving in Streaky Bay on the west coast of the Eyre Peninsula.
  • On September 5, 1971, 51-year-old Leslie Oswald Harris suffered a shark bite while fishing at Blanch Harbor near Port Augusta. The bite was slightly injured, but he suffered a heart attack after that and died six hours later.

    1836-1962

    Between 1836 and 1962 only six fatal shark attacks were recorded.

    • On December 9, 1962, 16-year-old Geoffrey Martin Corner was attacked by sharks and killed while spear fishing at Carrickalinga Head on the Fleurieu Peninsula.
    • On February 2, 1937, Lars Rasmussen's crew from Penang was lost near Port Germein when the yacht sized 12Ã,® ft upside down on the high seas. His body was then seen in the jaws of a shark, though it is unknown whether he drowned or died as a result of shark attacks.
    • On January 22, 1936, 13, Ray Bennett was taken by sharks in West Beach near Adelaide around 18:00.
    • On March 17, 1926 Mrs. Primrose Whyte was killed while swimming near the pier at Brighton Beach. The shark is believed to be most probably the Great White shark. Mrs Whyte had been a children's swimming instructor and was immortalized with the establishment of a granite fountain on The Esplanade.
    • On January 14, 1884, Miss Warren, daughter of Captain Ben Warren, fell into the sea from Bellona and was carried by two sharks. The ship is an hour's drive from Port Pirie near the Eastern Shoal in Spencer Gulf.
    • On March 28, 1855, the son of Captain Coleman was taken by shark after falling from the sailing ship Sobella near Port Wakefield on St. Bay. Vincent. Witnesses saw the shark swim along with the boy's body in his jaw.
